You Died! (Respawn for $2.99?)
chris_mahan··on Escape from XP
That boot up sound brought back some dreadful memories.
chris_mahan··on Why Working at Google Is Not My Dream Job Anymore
You took the Bloomberg offer I assume?
chris_mahan··on Why Working at Google Is Not My Dream Job Anymore
I went to their office in Venice on an unofficial tour thanks to a googler friend of mine (thank you!) and at the time also noted that I would not want to work there.
chris_mahan··on Why Working at Google Is Not My Dream Job Anymore
I went through the same thing twice at google, but actually failed the over-the-phone interviews. Bank of America had a firm offer the very next day after the interview. I've been there 4 years, get great vacation amount and benefits (401k match, etc) and it's 20-40 minutes from the house, depending on traffic, instead of in Venice, which would be 1.5 hours. And I get paid well. On top of that, the work is interesting and challenging.
chris_mahan··on Always Talk to Strangers
It's much harder to program humans to do what we want them to do.(My wife has it figured out though).
chris_mahan··on Maps of the Roman Empire
No problem! Thank you, that page is interesting.
chris_mahan··on The S in Rest
Besides, the price may be different based on who's asking.
chris_mahan··on Maps of the Roman Empire
Error on the legend on the map of the Rise of Constantine (section 31). The campaign against Maxentius should read 312, not 212.

So plain http in plain, static html (no javascript, limited css) is best then...

I don't think that's the narrative Microsoft was going for.
chris_mahan··on Oak Island Money Pit: Unsolved Mystery
If I was a real pirate, I'd store my treasure in another island, or rather spend it on cannons, women, and booze.
chris_mahan··on Russia extends Snowden residency by three years
Ah, ok.
chris_mahan··on Russia extends Snowden residency by three years
Don't come to america. It's the same crap.

(bigger TVs, though, probably)

chris_mahan··on Russia extends Snowden residency by three years
Yet, he did what he did to demonstrate the the US government was violating the US Constitution, which are the law also, and the US government charges him with violating the law? Who will charge the US government with violating the law? Or is the US government above the law? Is the law meaningless if it doesn't apply to the US government? Isn't the US Constitution specifically drafted to restrict the actions of the US Government? But if the US government violates the constitution with impunity, then isn't the US government illegitimate? And is an illegitimate government allowed to issued valid charges of violation of law, when it violates the law itself?

Snowden should have never been charged. Snowden is a hero, one who took his oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, with all seriousness, at great personal risk, and now his good name is tarnished and his freedom is restricted, and the people who violated their oaths and broke the law are free.

Shame, shame.

chris_mahan··on Russia extends Snowden residency by three years
Was Snowden charged with a crime? Upon what basis did the US government revoke his passport?
chris_mahan··on A Buddhist monk confronts Japan’s suicide culture (2013)
Well, that's not the only place I went to eat. There's this little sushi bar just a short walking distance from their house where I ate raw frozen thin-sliced whale meat. (Tastes like a blend of beef and tuna. Unexpectedly salty. My son didn't like it. I ate the nine pieces in front of me.

Oh, also went to the shabushabu place in the Fukuoka train station mall on the 10th floor. Awesome. Best shabushabu in my life (not too pricy). Great view from the roof.

Yeah, and Miso soup and rice and other stuff for breakfast.

chris_mahan··on A Buddhist monk confronts Japan’s suicide culture (2013)
You try staying married to a Japanese woman for 15 years without learning to accept that another culture and point of view is as valid as yours.

It's naive, by the way.

chris_mahan··on A Buddhist monk confronts Japan’s suicide culture (2013)
My wife is Japanese (born and raised there) and she does not look at it that way. She says people who commit suicide are losers can't apologize properly and work hard to make up for their mistake, or people who don't have the guts to weather through the hard times. Also, the whole samurai/bushido thing essentially doesn't exist for anyone under fifty over there. I went to Japan with my family in January, and I had a wonderful time, by the way. Eat at Joyfull, so cheap, so good! ( http://www.joyfull.co.jp/ -- see breakfast menu: http://www.joyfull.co.jp/menu/morning.html )

chris_mahan··on Russia offers $110,000 to crack Tor anonymous network
Another option is an effort to identify cryptographically-capable individuals around the works as targets for potential contact, work, on behalf of the U.S. and its allies.

TOR as a recruitment tool?

chris_mahan··on Russia offers $110,000 to crack Tor anonymous network
Are we saying that Russian intelligence services cannot hack TOR and need some random hacker to do it?

Imagine if the CIA offered $1M to crack TOR. They would be the laughingstock of the intelligence community.

I think there is something else going on. I would not touch this. It looks like bait.

chris_mahan··on “You're not allowed science any more”
It's this reasoning that gave us the 401K.
chris_mahan··on Exploring No Man’s Sky, A Computer Game Forged by Algorithms
I wonder, if atoms, then molecules, then DNA, then viruses. We'll see if the dinosaurs get sick, and whether there will be players who choose to become doctors to heal, or at least understand the diseases.

Mmmmm, somehow, no.

There has to be some level of abstraction, otherwise they'd be recreating the actual universe, and I don't think the PS4 could handle that.

chris_mahan··on Microsoft laid me off after 15 years of service. Life after Microsoft?
As a mid-45 male with a wife and kid, my cobra 5 years ago was $1200/month, and I was glad to pay it. 14,000 a year is nothing compared to one major incident involving a hospital.
chris_mahan··on Microsoft Looks to Cut Up to 18,000 Jobs
Ah, perhaps if you're the MBA bean counter type. In reality, you should grow the business, because now you have much better back-office capabilities to support a more distributed, more diverse workforce. Don't be afraid of having lots of people, be afraid of not managing (supporting) them well, causing inefficiency.

chris_mahan··on Emails, court docs show how Sony stood up to Steve Jobs’ and Pixar’s wage-fixing
Once you've demonstrated you have no integrity as a human being, the onus is on you to demonstrate, through your actions, that you have changed.
chris_mahan··on Emails, court docs show how Sony stood up to Steve Jobs’ and Pixar’s wage-fixing
Exactly right.

They think it's just a game.

Bastards.
