chris222··on Apple is struggling to build Mac Pro based on its own silicon
Does MacOS even have OS level independent volume control for each app yet?
chris222··on Ask HN: What is the best podcast you listened to in 2022?
There were way too many factually wrong things in this episode for me to reccomend it. It was particularly cringe when they discussed electric cars.
chris222··on Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll
This is false. You should check the records as to what Tesla was before Musk and JB Straubel came on board, it wasn’t much. I highly doubt the company would have survived past the Roadster.
chris222··on California pulls the plug on rooftop solar
I found this article helpful when researching the topic:

https://off-grid-home.com/is-it-legal-to-disconnect-your-hom...

If highly depends on your State and also how your off-grid system works.

chris222··on A minor memorial for Leo Laporte’s terrestrial AM radio show
Same story for me! I had just moved to San Francisco in ~2014 after landing my first Silicon Valley tech job. One of the first things I did was head up to the studios to watch This Week in Tech live. Leo was so nice and we chatted for a bit after the show and took pictures. I love that photo! I’ve been a fan since TechTV!

Leo in many ways has spawned a whole industry with podcasting and youtubers covering tech. Kevin Rose did a great interview years back with Leo as the subject and it was fascinating hearing about how it all came to be. Much respect!

You use local distribution when selling power back, but your point still stands it is mostly profit.
chris222··on California pulls the plug on rooftop solar
This is false. Many places require a grid connection and most utilities have a fixed monthly fee as part of the bill.
chris222··on California pulls the plug on rooftop solar
Does CA split up supply, transmission and distribution on their bills? New Hampshire does and our NEM 2.0 rules are quite fair.

chris222··on Electric car sales drive toward cleaner air, less mortality
The tires my Tesla came with lasted only about 20,000 miles. I replaced them with better tires and those are not even close to wearing out after 30,000 additional miles.
chris222··on The Twitter Files
What are those links? Is it bad stuff that should have been taken down to to terms of service? This is lazy reporting and seems like a nothing burger.
chris222··on Tesla delivers first electric Semi trucks – three years late
If we isolate the battery pack cost it is likely between $100,000 and $150,000. This comes from some data suggesting Tesla was purchasing cells around $140/kWh a year ago. Lets assume the rest of the truck costs the same (it won’t) and the Tesla Semi is $100,000 to $150,000 more expensive than another diesel Semi truck.

Average semi trucks get 6.5 miles per gallon and diesel fuel is around $5.00 per gallon right now. This translates to 77 cents a mile in fuel. Tesla semi uses 2kWh per mile. We can assume a hefty 20 cents/kWh price for commercial off peak power which translates to 40 cents a mile. With a delta of 37 cents a mile the $100,000 to $150,000 expense is paid off in ~300,00 to ~400,000 miles.

Semi trucks are built to last around 750,000 to 1 million miles and drive an average of ~50,000 miles a year. Thus the payback comes in around year 6 or 7 of a ~15 year lifespan.

chris222··on Tesla delivers first electric Semi trucks – three years late
The battery is even larger than that. They did a 500 mile drive and claimed a slightly less than 2kWh/mi average efficiency. The peak charging rate is around 1MW.

7 cents/kWh is still doable with a large commerical solar farm and megapacks. My residential rooftop solar at over $3.00/watt installed is generating power at around that price (based on 25 year system lifetime). A commercial solar+storage solution should be able to hit that price.

chris222··on CATL's Sodium-Ion Battery
It’s not the average drive. The p95 will be a lot higher in North America than China or Europe. Theres also elevation, winters and our obsession with going 70-80mph on highways.
chris222··on CATL's Sodium-Ion Battery
Your actual limitation when the site is full is usually the utility transformer. Tesla have been installing many 8 stall and even 12 stall sites with 750kVA pad transformers.

If they had a Tesla Megapack as a buffer for example the transformer wouldn’t be the bottleneck as the output is greater from the Megapack.

Bluetti (maker of sogens) will be using these cells early next year.

You can already buy these cells in home sogens starting early next year.
