chris222··on Rivian embraces Tesla's charging standard for EVs
Yah this is where people get stuck in their way of thinking about current technology limitations.

Really fast <10m charge times are only about 5 years away which means people will use DC fast chargers like gas stations.

chris222··on John Carmack on shorter work weeks (2016)
Disagree. 80 hour weeks is not sustainable so if you are basing your startup success on that than you are doomed.
chris222··on John Carmack on shorter work weeks (2016)
Isn’t his opinion basically irrelevant since he is someone like Musk that has zero concept of WLB.
chris222··on Waymo and Uber partner to bring autonomous driving technology to Uber
It’s not trivial at all. Do you work in the space at all?
chris222··on Ask HN: Hybrid or Full EV Car in Flyover States for 2023 (US)
You could probably get away with a Tesla no matter where you live in the U.S.

If you don’t like Teslas a PHEV makes a lot of sense. You will charge for most daily driving but still have the ability to road trip.

CCS charging networks are not there yet.

chris222··on Ask HN: Hybrid or Full EV Car in Flyover States for 2023 (US)
The Equinox EV will be built in Mexico.
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
No bullpen seating is clearly the best choice for people doing focus work. /s
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
The benefits are so obvious it is amazing these “tech geniuses” are so behind the times.
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
4 day work week as standard is the next trend. And they will fight it equally despite the amazing mental and physical health benefits.
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
OpenAI is the one pushing all the other companies to be irresponsible and rush their products to market. I don’t get it.
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
You can be remote and also meet in person. You make zero sense.
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
False. Sounds like you have no idea how to run remote teams.
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
It works for early stage startups too. Just not the frat house kind that is all he knows and has foisted on the world.
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
100% agree.
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
Physical office real estate is a major liability in 2023. All of this noise is about people not accepting that fact.
chris222··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
Heavily disagree and I run remote teams.
chris222··on Starship Is Ready to Launch
This take really makes no sense at all. Even if you argue that all Elon did is start SpaceX and provide the initial funding (which is undeniable) than you would still have to agree he has been wildly successful as a business person. People are admired for many different reasons, many with signficant character flaws. It sounds like you are trying to project your personal feelings on everyone else.
chris222··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
M2 is kind of a stop gap. I decided to wait for the M3 macbook air to replace my 2015 macbook pro.
chris222··on Wind-Powered Cargo Ships
At least for those other use cases the emissions are much less.
chris222··on YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki is stepping down
Same! Please do not change it!
chris222··on Shoichiro Toyoda, who turned Toyota into global automaker, has died
Actually they are having huge quality problems with their first BEV.

chris222··on Shoichiro Toyoda, who turned Toyota into global automaker, has died
This was true several years ago but if you look now there are hundreds of GWh of cell plants coming online over the next 3 years. Toyota is very late here and won’t be able to produce dedicated BEVs at scale until 2026+. Competitors will already be on their 2nd or 3rd generation BEV platforms by then.
chris222··on Apple avoids job cuts because it didn’t overhire like Google and Amazon
This comes directly from Steve Jobs legacy. He talked a lot about the value of small teams and how they self regulate but can breakup if they grow too quickly.

chris222··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
Not true! I worked at what some would consider one of the top offices (Dropbox). They went remote and the polling was something like 70% support 30% oppose. There were some vocal supporters of in-office (mostly due to the perks like food) but they gave a generous stipend instead to satisfy most people.
chris222··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
One word comes to mind: cringe.

Please go live on a farm or something and do real work.

chris222··on The UK is wasting a lot of wind power
Very good article. As far as the options presented I think transmission lines are still the best bet, along with storage.

Storage can come in many forms including at a customers residence via batteries or thermal storage. Not all of these options need to be cycled daily to make financial sense. In the U.S. we have an insane number of people that maintain days worth of storage as fuel for their generators only to be used infrequently when the power goes out.

chris222··on ElonJet Wrapped 2022
Yes, all of that can easily be boiled down to the efficiency of an electric motor versus a gasoline engine. The more miles you drive the faster you will offset any carbon from manufacturing.
chris222··on ElonJet Wrapped 2022
BEVs on average currently take more energy than ICE to build but the difference is made up in a couple years because electric motors are so efficient compared to gas engines.
chris222··on Apple is struggling to build Mac Pro based on its own silicon
You can’t even mute Zoom on Mac OSX. Frequently I want to leave video up but mute anyone that is talking.
chris222··on US companies are producing heat pumps that work below -20F
Was it the company mentioned in the second half of this show:

https://youtu.be/TlX5z32T1J4

Air to water is pretty new technology for the U.S. As you mentioned most oil boiler hydronic systems are spec’d for a much higher temp (like 160 to 180F). I’ve been curious myself if you can salvage any of the existing baseboards with a 130F supply.

I have a 5 head mitsubishi cold weather mini split installed last year but I am still keeping my oil boiler for now for domestic hot water and supplemental heat. If I could switch that to an air to water heat pump for a reasonable cost that would be nice.
