chmullig··on Programming Is a Dead End Job
(I don't particularly agree that it's well written.)

However I entirely agree. By the definition of "who gets to be CEO," every job except senior executive is dead end!

chmullig··on A LaTeX Resume Template that fits everything AND looks good
I think it's a great start. I agree with most of the comments here: you have a lot of stuff nobody wants to read about, and not nearly enough white space!

Here's an updated version that cuts some of the junk (somewhat arbitrarily, but the point is you don't need 15 awards and nobody gives a shit about your society memberships), and notably increases the margins and space between the columns. Some of the text needs to be reflowed, of course.

chmullig··on A LaTeX Resume Template that fits everything AND looks good
You want the most important thing first. For new graduates education will (almost always) be first. For those with experience it typically comes last, where it's also distinctive but less prominent.

So I'm guessing you've mostly seen resumes for students and recent graduates.

chmullig··on Why You Shouldn't Say It's Easy When Teaching
As soon as I realized this, it actually became quite helpful.

Saying something is "easy" or "obvious" is useful! It may demotivate if done poorly. However with a proper teaching approach it also signals what SHOULD be obvious. If it's not obvious to you yet, it's important to learn and understand why not, and eventually it should become obvious.

chmullig··on My First Job Interview was with a Billionaire
Informal is totally fine, but I found the relatively low writing quality distracting.
chmullig··on Amazon Snags Older HBO Shows For Web Streaming
I'm not sure I understand what you're suggesting. To me this says that HBO is becoming more like most other content providers.
chmullig··on OS X Beta Seed Program
As others have mentioned AppleSeed for non-devs has been around for years. I've been testing major OSX releases since the end of 2008 for Snow Leopard - friend of a friend at Apple was looking for people to test exchange integration, IIRC.

I'm not sure this will give access to 10.10 seeds though - for the last couple of releases we've gotten redemption codes to install them initial seed - it's a separate application, not a software update.

chmullig··on The Invention of the AeroPress
And a quarter the quality!
chmullig··on Quake III bounty: we have a winner
Such quantity? It's like 2 million units. That's roughly equivalent to a mildly popular android phone model.
chmullig··on Announcing your plans makes you less motivated to accomplish them (2009)
Research[0] in politics has exposed the exact opposite - identifying and sharing concrete plans for voting has a significant impact in increasing voter turnout.

chmullig··on How to Get a Job at Google
Yes, google docs is still used. Several of the people I did phone screens with commiserated that it's a poor way to code online, but they seemed to have 0 choice in the matter.

Yahoo used collabedit.com, which was much more pleasant (but still realtime).

chmullig··on Important Kickstarter Security Notice
The list of companies who have meaningful numbers of users and haven't been hacked is growing vanishingly small. You'll also notice that no payment information was breached, substantially better than most other similar events.

Plus, I'm not sure where you possibly got billions in annual revenue? They're incredibly public about their statistics and business model. They take 5% of successfully raised projects. They report $842M successful dollars on the site, for a lifetime revenue of $42 million in the 5 years since they were founded.

chmullig··on GitHub goes to school
That's an incredibly classist point of view. I have plenty of friends at a top institution that can barely afford rent and to eat after their 2 hour commute. If they had to, sure, they'd find a way to sacrifice something to pay for github, but it surely isn't "ample disposable income." Please look outside your bubble.
chmullig··on Python with Braces
This is bad, and you should feel bad.
chmullig··on Satya Nadella – Microsoft's CEO
I think his next move will be to only accept payment in bitcoin.
chmullig··on Confessions of an ex-TSA agent
Look at the numbers:

Rank Airport Passenger numbers 1 Ben Gurion Airport 13,134,070 2 Eilat Airport 1,400,067 3 Sde Dov Airport 658,741 4 Ovda Airport 136,791 5 Haifa Airport 68,968 6 Ben Ya'akov Airport 15,782

Meanwhile in the US, Birmingham is the #72 airport, and the one closest to Israel's #2.

Harrisburg, PA is #105, and closest to Sde Dov.

Lincoln, NE is #204, and closest to Ovda.

chmullig··on Hit ’Em Where It Hurts: The solution to the higher-ed adjunct crisis
It's an interesting point. However she needs to be clear that the measure that matters isn't student to adjunct, or anything like that. The thing that matters is % of student hours taught by graduate students, vs adjuncts, vs tenure(-track) faculty.

Tenured faculty often teach many sessions, however they may only be teaching 8 graduate students while the 175 student intro class is taught by an adjunct.

chmullig··on Confessions of an ex-TSA agent
While I think the TSA is largely a sack of shit, Israel's solution is hardly a panacea.

Israel has basically 1 major airport, and 2 minor airports. They further are based heavily on profiling. I don't expect the Israeli model would fit well to the US, which has 19 airports with more traffic than Ben Gurion, and a much more dynamic set of threats.

chmullig··on Startups that have bootstrapped their way to profitability
Braintree was acquired by eBay, after several rounds of VC including a $35M Series A.......
chmullig··on Impermium acquired by Google
I guess burn some VC cash for a while and then get acquihired.
chmullig··on Ask HN: Do you read Medium.com
For me, it's because Medium is frequently poorly researched and/or written blogspam. The URL provides no context about who or what wrote it.
chmullig··on What It's Like to Fail
I think you should learn from his later conclusion: He realized that people matter much more than money. Don't miss your children's childhoods for a few extra bucks, it's not worth it.
chmullig··on Is Economics a Science?
Any headline which ends in a question mark can also be answered by the word yes. Whether either is correct is another matter entirely.
chmullig··on I Bought An Apartment To Rent Out On Airbnb
NYC had numerous building codes and restrictions previously, including the 1867 Tenement Law, and the famous 1901 new tenement law.
chmullig··on Amazon Kindle Matchbook is live
I have dozens (over a hundred?) purchased books on amazon over the last decade. 3 matching books, one of which is the Odyssey. It's an awesome idea, but it doesn't seem to include much yet.

Most of the "new and popular" books seem to be pulp romance series that are already free in the prime lending library.

chmullig··on Nissan Tests 48 kWh Battery In Leaf
Am I wrong to be annoyed that they're ripping off the Ars Technica brand?
chmullig··on How does Trello access the user's clipboard?
It's so disappointing how every question worth reading gets flagged, downvoted, and closed for the most random, pedantic bullshit reasons.
chmullig··on Sears is Turning Shuttered Stores into Data Centers
It's not whether it's already laid, but how easily it could be added.
chmullig··on Open Source Is Better Than the Closed Stuff (Until You Hit 1 Million Lines)
I seriously wonder about sample size and representativeness. What projects are they looking at in either group?
chmullig··on Want to Spam Your LinkedIn Contacts and Be Humiliated? Try FounderDating
How about not having awful, abusive "features?"
