chitowneats··on Ask HN: What Stack/language/technology should one learn for employment?
> Every interview you ever do will be in Python

This must be specific to your area of expertise. I've been in the industry over a decade, and never have I conducted or been a candidate in an interview where Python was used.

chitowneats··on Google tells employees that fewer of them will get promotions to senior roles
The private sector grades on a curve. That curve is bent over time and the levels adjust.
chitowneats··on SimCity launched a decade ago, and it was so disastrous it killed the series
Yes, and the original SimCity was a wild success.
chitowneats··on Denver’s e-bike subsidy program produced more new riders, fewer car trips
That's a terrible part of Denver. I agree. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Why would you ever lock your bike outside anywhere in the U.S.? NYC is no better. It's actually worse out East in my experience. That's a separate issue. One exacerbated by the naive views of liberal voters.

You live in the remnants of the Wild West. Millions of poor Central Americans are pouring across the border and setting up shop in your backyard. What do you expect? You are never going to get European city living unless you move to Europe.

chitowneats··on Denver’s e-bike subsidy program produced more new riders, fewer car trips
Yet another person who's never been to any part of Denver outside downtown. The bikeability of Phoenix is atrocious. The two cities are not even comparable in this regard. Denver, like most places in the U.S., discovered bikeability in the last couple of decades. Meanwhile, Phoenix has maintained or even exacerbated the status quo. Denver has invested tens of millions into becoming a denser, more bikeable locale. It also elects politicians who campaign on and further this goal. The same cannot be said for Phoenix.
chitowneats··on Denver’s e-bike subsidy program produced more new riders, fewer car trips
If you're clicking around on random streets in Google Maps, it's clear you have no actual knowledge of the city. It's far less dense than any place you are comparing it to. Paris has been inhabited by city builders for thousands of years. Denver for about 150.

It has such an uphill battle against its historical context as a Western U.S. mining town. Before that, the area was sparsely populated by Native American hunter-gatherers. You're not even pretending to consider the starting point.

Why not compare it to places like Salt Lake City, or Boise? Cities that actually have some similarity to it terms of population and historical development.

I encourage everyone to disregard the comment I'm replying to. It's totally ridiculous. Peak HN big-brain BS.

chitowneats··on Denver’s e-bike subsidy program produced more new riders, fewer car trips
Denver is trying. But they have so far to go. I wish them luck and success. The driving culture is strong.

Every single comment I've made in this thread was made with the intent of chiding those who are off topic.

"We didn't start the fire! Da nah nah nah nah nah"

chitowneats··on Tech Is Allowing Businesses to Overcharge You in Tips
Please fix your multiple typos. You have a very interesting point, and I'm worried it will be lost for some. Particularly those for whom English is not their first language. The Old World will be awake soon.
chitowneats··on 90% of Kidnappings in São Paulo result from dates on Tinder and similar apps
And yet, TFA is about a completely separate phenomenon. Why are you seemingly incapable of staying on topic by discussing it?
chitowneats··on 90% of Kidnappings in São Paulo result from dates on Tinder and similar apps
You're right. I assumed the commenter was male. I'm just recalling how many times women in my life said that to me in response to me daring to bring up any male-centered concerns. Things like Me Too witch hunts of men later proven to be innocent.
chitowneats··on 90% of Kidnappings in São Paulo result from dates on Tinder and similar apps
The article is about overwhelmingly male victims. It's not always about you!
chitowneats··on Report: U.S. pedestrian death rate increased during COVID
You're right. But our cars didn't suddenly get worse during the last 3 years. The behavioral changes we're seeing in drivers since the pandemic are very, very concerning to me. We need more understanding of this phenomenon.
chitowneats··on Who rules Earth? Wild mammals far outweighed by humans and domestic animals
And I'll admit that I'm exhausted by eco-nostalgia and eco-doomerism, which led me to comment dismissively. I understand how that can be off-putting and unpersuasive.
chitowneats··on Who rules Earth? Wild mammals far outweighed by humans and domestic animals
I'm agreeing with that part. The part I disagree with is that we are somehow "fucked". We have lots of smart people working on that problem. Which is why we've actually had some good climate news lately. Doomer-ish statements like, "we're fucked", are just as likely to lead to demotivation and panic as they are to helpful solutions or action. So I avoid that mindset completely.

It is a funny punchline. That's why I say it's a great joke. But let's not read too much into that.

chitowneats··on Who rules Earth? Wild mammals far outweighed by humans and domestic animals
A great joke. It makes a good point; almost. I'm still waiting for the doomsday that's always just around the corner. We're technologists here. Let's focus on solving problems rather than trying to turn back the clock.
chitowneats··on Who rules Earth? Wild mammals far outweighed by humans and domestic animals
Biodiversity is important insofar as it facilitates human flourishing. Flowery poetry about An Idealized Past doesn't have anything to say about that. Therefore, it is uninteresting.
chitowneats··on Who rules Earth? Wild mammals far outweighed by humans and domestic animals
Ah yes. An empty, denuded world, with unprecedented flourishing for our friends, family, and fellow humans. This type of nostalgia for a wild world full of disease and dangerous predators fails so utterly to motivate me.
chitowneats··on Why are so many young men single and sexless?
"Young men must re-prioritize real-life relationships and intimacy attuned to the shift in priorities that women have already made"

The priorities of women in their 20s are dating men in their 30s. This new stat and the accompanying Boomer commentary is genuinely one of the funniest memes so far in 2023. They literally don't understand the world they created for future generations.

chitowneats··on Relic: Functional relational programming for Clojure(Script)
Don't worry. It didn't.
chitowneats··on Relic: Functional relational programming for Clojure(Script)
Like I said. Functional-ish. Still way too many ThingDoers and other associated boilerplate to be actually interesting. A nice option though if you're working in a legacy codebase or your employer requires it.
chitowneats··on Relic: Functional relational programming for Clojure(Script)
I want this to be true. And certainly there has been a lot of progress towards functional-ish code in the languages I'm about to reference.

In my experience, languages like C, Go, Java, C# still dominate the backend. Replacing JavaScript is such a simple and well-defined task that I expect it will be completed much sooner. Maybe only a decade or two.

chitowneats··on Relic: Functional relational programming for Clojure(Script)
Either way, FP is slowly eating the web. "View as function of state" has thoroughly won the argument. What that will ultimately look like is unclear, but ignore it at your own peril.
chitowneats··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
Thankfully I exist in 2023. I would not have, and will never, support apartheid or genocide of Black Americans. China is perpetrating this as we speak.
chitowneats··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
Muslims in Xinjiang are not Han Chinese. You're buying into the propaganda. In any case, the world should not be okay with this.
chitowneats··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
Unfortunately, you seem fundamentally confused about the position of people who are skeptical of zoonotic origin.

Please explain to me how position A) is more racist than position B)

A) Scientists all over the world, including Chinese, Americans, and others, made a fundamental misjudgement about the safety of the Wuhan virology lab, or perhaps viral experimentation generally, and the result was a global pandemic

Versus

B) Chinese people eating & trading wild and exotic meat unintentionally caused a global pandemic due to their consumption

Of course, neither theory is racist. That's a word that used to mean something (and I wish it still did!), but is mostly used today to shut down debate in Western countries.

chitowneats··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
The question is not whether the research was worth it overall. They denied there was even a possibility that lab leak was the cause of the pandemic.

I'm more than happy to entertain the idea that the research is and was worth it. But we need to have an accurate accounting of recent events. They tried to completely shut that down. Thankfully, lately it seems that they failed.

chitowneats··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
True. And yet, it shows that there is a large scientific community & apparatus willing to experiment with this.

Circumstantial evidence is not proof of wrongdoing, but it is reason to ask more questions. Why were those questions censored? Why were they ruled unacceptable "misinformation"? It seems to me that we were asleep at the switch.
