Just a line to show that I am alive & kicking and going grand. It's a treat.

chistev··on "The Question of Abortion: A Search for Answers" by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan
This submission is likely to get flagged since the topic of abortion is understandably inflammatory. But I thought it's a good essay to share.

I'm going to copy a previous comment I made two hours ago on a different submission and say that If you enjoyed reading this, I suggest you read the book "Billions and Billions: Thoughts on Life and Death at the Brink of the Millennium" by Carl Sagan. It was the last book he wrote before he died in 1996. The book contains a collection of essays by Carl Sagan on various topics, and it includes the essay submitted above.

Thank you.

chistev··on Ask HN: Do you regret using Social Networking apps?
I'm just going to copy paste a comment I made in a different thread.

One problem for me about leaving social media is that it limits my chances of getting updates about jobs, and if I start a business, social media is a good way of promoting the business. I wish I was in a financial position where I didn't have to bother about this.

I've been limiting my use of social media (aside Reddit and HN) for almost two weeks now and I've been reading books and doing other things with my time rather than consuming content that isn't beneficial to me.

chistev··on Venus may have been temperate and potentially habitable for most of its history
In the book Cosmos, I think Carl Sagan speculated that it might have been home to an ancient civilization that brought about its own demise from industrial induced global warming which ran away.
chistev··on Every novel is boring until it isn't
Really? I thought the first Harry Potter book was very engaging. The second book had more dry spots for me.

Interestingly, the comments on that Show HN thread were skepticisms regarding security. Skepticisms that turned out to be well-founded as the submission shows.
