chipgap98··on Microsoft was not a winner of the events of the last few days around OpenAI
This take misses a few big points

1. Microsoft is offering GPT APIs in Azure. They’re already taking accountability for the technology.

2. Much of their investment in OpenAI has been in the form of Azure credits and not all of it has been paid yet.

3. Microsoft wouldn’t bring the OpenAI team into the core company. They’d let them build a new company that Microsoft owns. That’s a big difference.

chipgap98··on Is it safe to build with OpenAI API now thatAltman is gone?
I've been having the same concerns. At the very least it seems prudent to build on the Azure GPT APIs rather than directly through OpenAI
chipgap98··on [dead]
No it isn’t. You could read this as him being back or him showing love for the team that pushed to get him back even though he is still leaving.
chipgap98··on Sama: I love the OpenAI team so much
Well this clears things up /s
chipgap98··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
None of the news that has come out has indicated that was the case
chipgap98··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
What does that have to do with any of this?
chipgap98··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
The fact that the Chairman of the board was not included in the decision is a pretty big indicator
chipgap98··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
1. There is so much momentum around OpenAI that it would be tough to walk away 2. I imagine they could find a better way to setup governance so the nonprofit entity still exists but the for profit entity has a bit more autonomy
chipgap98··on Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing?
It has basically been confirmed

chipgap98··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
They didn't "fire him on the spot". They did a review that it sounds like was going on before today
chipgap98··on Guava: Google core libraries for Java
This makes it sound like joda and java.time are the same. They have major differences and java.time fixes a lot of the problems with joda time.
chipgap98··on New models and developer products
The Assistants playground doesn't seem to be available yet
chipgap98··on New models and developer products
The Assistants API and OpenAI Store are really interesting. Those are the types of things that could build a moat for OpenAI

chipgap98··on EU data regulator bans personalised advertising on Facebook and Instagram
Great so regulate personalization around certain types of products like medication and medical treatment. I don't understand how this scenario explains why we should throw out this whole category of business.

chipgap98··on Google to invest up to $2B in Anthropic

chipgap98··on It's Fucking Impossible to Stay Healthy
The author is going through a major life transition as they move from being a full time student to a full time employee. Its not crazy that the stress of that change may impact their diet and weight. Also they are talking about 2 lbs over their typical weight.

chipgap98··on John Riccitiello steps down as CEO of Unity
Unreal is even more expensive and requires reporting your revenue to pay for it. How is that a better option than Unity?
chipgap98··on John Riccitiello steps down as CEO of Unity
I think the concern is real but I don’t think there is another viable competitor to Unity
chipgap98··on Meta wants to charge EU users $14/month if they don't agree to personalized ads
What's the alternative? People choose the ad-supported options because they like the product experience. I having a hard time understanding what the legislative solution to this problem is
chipgap98··on Why Tailwind CSS Won
Tailwind is also great for this. You create components with Tailwind that make this trivial

It's awful that this is the only way to get the attention of companies these days

chipgap98··on Has Xbox lost the console wars?
That would be a good thing for Microsoft. I don't think the data supports this. A quick google search showed that there are 25 million Game Pass subscribers and 125 million people in the Xbox ecosystem. There are also still plenty of games that aren't included in Game Pass.
chipgap98··on AA CEO tells pilots the carrier to increase pay to up to $590k a year
I don't know why, but I didn't think pilots made nearly that much money. I'm including the amount they made before the raise, let alone after.
