chickenimprint··on Little rant about GNOME's file manager (a.k.a. Nautilus)
> Visual clutter With a mote of customization this is not an issue. Choose a minimalist plasma and icon theme and replace menu bars with the configurable hamburger menu, or place them on a panel Mac OS-style.

>forcing Activities As corroboration for rejecting this I'll admit I've been using KDE Plasma for a long time and I still haven't bothered to figure out what they do. Not only are they not forced, their discoverability is 0.

>poor integration with GTK apps The context menu hover looks different, but apart from that non-CSD apps arguably look more at home than in Gnome 3

I don't know why I felt the need to defend a desktop, but I get the impression that Plasma is judged by its defaults rather than its possibilities.

chickenimprint··on Intel Thermal daemon: Linux daemon used to prevent the overheating of platforms
CPU throttling means decreasing frequency (and voltage). By definition, CPUs will operate at their maximum possible performance given thermal limits, making your scenario impossible. The harsh performance degradation observed during prolonged compiles stems from the aggressive turbo limits Intel enforces, which draw far beyond what the CPU and VRM can sustain. For 15 W, 28 W, and 45 W class CPUs, the PL2 values are 55 W, 64 W and 115 W.
chickenimprint··on Intel Thermal daemon: Linux daemon used to prevent the overheating of platforms
CPUs do regulate themselves in hardware. They can throttle to whatever maximium Tdie is registered by the BIOS or sometimes the host system within milliseconds and even communicate with the VRM.
chickenimprint··on Apple M1 Ultra Meanings and Consequences
Current AMD chiplets come with a maximum of 8 cores.
chickenimprint··on Canada accidentally helped crack computer translation
Off-topic: Shouldn't it be something like "wat voor grote mezen"? How can "een" be the article of a plural?
chickenimprint··on Ask HN: Is there any optimism for non-macOS laptops in the near future?
I don't get the obsession with the M1. The Intel 12900h is equal at 45w and substantially faster at higher wattages. Same goes for the AMD 6900HX which also scales really well into lower wattages. Dedicated GPUs of course mop the floor with Apple IGPs, admittedly with more energy. All that with a cheaper and less dense architecture. The fact that Apple - a company with 14 times the market cap of Intel and AMD and exlusive access to TSMC 5n for their PC processors - has failed to beat them is embarrassing.
chickenimprint··on Google Tag Manager, the new anti-adblock weapon (2020)
Is it safe to assume you've never had to deal with those downright malevolent dark patterns and button labyrinths, designed to make it extremely unlikely for anyone in the general population to actually reject tracking?
chickenimprint··on QAnon founder may have been identified thanks to machine learning
Watkins is an admin and son of the creator of 8kun. He was a prominent propagator of Q content and the large amount of circumstatial evidence connecting him to Q has lead numerous researchers and journalists to suspect him for quite a while.
chickenimprint··on Official Response: Request to Freeze Canadian Edge Users’ Accounts
They are able to freeze assets suspected of being used to fund criminal activity. This only applies to the corporate accounts of the owners of the trucks and the millions of dollars raised by mostly US-based anti-vaxxers. If Antifa activists were to recieve 6 figures from mostly Chinese communists with the express intent to use those funds to cause economic damage, some of the commentators here might react differently.

Of course there have been ample warnings, including the handing out of leaflets detailing the unlawful offenses. Many people were ticketed and arrested at border crossing protests, including 11 members of a splinter group, in posession of 13 long guns, ammunition, body armor and hand guns.

The Ambassodor Bridge, accounting for ~30% of the cross-border land trade has since been cleared. The damage is estimated at above $500M. Damages at border crossings in Alberta and Manitoba have been estimated at 48 and $73M respectively.

chickenimprint··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
The purpose of using phone numbers in many of todays services, is to shift the work of validating the authenticity of the user to carriers. Of course this has given rise to inumerable vendors of accounts or forged prepaid cards, but it raises the barrier just enough to make mass cheating, boosting, spamming unprofitable.
