cheph··on Microsoft Irish subsidiary paid zero corporate tax on £220bn profit last year
> 88% of the cost of the US Fed gov is paid for by taxes by workers (income taxes). Less than 12% comes from all corp/business taxes combined with capital gains (taxing the rich 1%).

"the rich" pay income taxes as well: https://itep.org/who-pays-taxes-in-america-in-2020/

In fact, the top 1% paid 24.3% of all income tax. And the top 5% paid 40.6% of all income tax.

So it is most definitely taxing the rich.

The top 25% paid 66.4% of all income taxes, so to suggest that this is somehow a very regressive tax system seems to not hold water.

Is Ireland not a democracy? Can't they vote to change their own tax laws if they have a problem with them?
cheph··on Google Groups has banned comp.lang.tcl
Google considered harmful. Just stay away from it.
cheph··on Movie written by algorithm turns out to be hilarious and intense
Its an intense simulation of what I'm sure having brain damage or a stroke must feel like.
cheph··on Air France cancels flights as Russia withholds clearance
Europe has consistently been a bigger trading partner with Russia: https://oec.world/en/profile/country/rus?subnatTradeValueSel...

And can't Germany do anything right without US holding their hand? But to be fair yes, Biden is equally pathetic and sad for gladhanding with Russia.

cheph··on Movie written by algorithm turns out to be hilarious and intense
Yeah, arstechnica.com is blatantly lying with the "hilarious and intense". This is garbage.
cheph··on Air France cancels flights as Russia withholds clearance
Maybe Russia can get it's shit in order?
cheph··on Air France cancels flights as Russia withholds clearance
So anything goes as long as Germany comes first? And really, is it in Germany's interests to support dictatorships as the wave of illiberalism rolls further west? How exactly?

Germany and it's neo empire, AKA EU, is spineless and pathetic and deserves to die the slow death it is facing while China and Russia crushes the last hope and light left in the world. Germany just can't help itself, time and again making the world a worse place. Germans truly learnt nothing, disingenuously saying "never again" while gladhanding with a authoritarian power openly engaging in genocide: https://neveragainrightnow.com/

cheph··on Amazon acquires MGM for $8.5B
Came here to say this, I avoid giving money to Amazon like the plague. I will go out of my way and invest my personal time as long as Amazon gets nothing. Don't give them your money.
cheph··on Real world ownership is not a use case for blockchain
Pretty sure it would but good luck when the tax authorities come for you.
cheph··on Leaving Freenode for a new network
> under Swedish law

What statute in Swedish law prohibits them from selling the network to someone who "totally gave his word" for a pack of beans?

cheph··on Real world ownership is not a use case for blockchain
> With a DAO as the nominal owner, selling property simply becomes a matter of executing a smart contract transaction on the blockchain.

Except legally speaking that means nothing unless you go through the legal process of transferring your title.

Sure if governments ran on it, but the cost won't really go away, you will still have taxes, and you will still have lawyers, and you will still have disputes. Smart contracts does not fix the oven that was not working properly when the title was transferred.

cheph··on Welcome to Libera Chat
> It is meant to be a drop-in(ish) replacement for freenode

A drop in replacement for a place that was run into the ground by the people who now will run the drop in replacement.

Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

If the sarcasm is missed, there is nothing at all funny about this abomination. I would much rather trust Andrew Lee than this bunch.

cheph··on Welcome to Libera Chat
I give it 2 years max until they sell libera.chat to the next "totally trustworthy guy who gave them his word" for a pack of magic beans.

Count me out of this scam.

cheph··on Real world ownership is not a use case for blockchain
And at this point, people pushing blockchain for representing real world ownership is either scamming you or stupid.
cheph··on Leaving Freenode for a new network
I dunno who the "We" is in "We are founding a new network with the same goals and ambitions to support foss and likeminded communities: libera.chat."

But if it is the same people who mismanaged freenode into this joke then maybe nobody should go there. Just a heads up. I think this Andrew Lee person would have a tough time being worse than them.

How long until they sell libera.chat for a pack of magic beans? I give it 2 years max.

cheph··on Subsidies Awarded to Amazon: at least $4.04B and Counting
So the racket in US, as far as I can tell, is basically this: Bezos and friends (e.g Bill Gates) push for higher taxes and other policies that are supposed to balance the power between business and "the people", this results in more taxes for businesses who would be their competitors, but Bezos and friends get waivers and don't have to pay the taxes or comply with policies.

I think US should pass a specific bill to tax Bezos and friends, take at least 90% of their net worth, and then start taxing "the rich". Anything else is just bullshit.

I mean, taxing the rich has nothing to do with deficit anyway, there are not enough rich people in the world to even make a dent in the massive hole US dug for themselves with their "money printer goes brrrr" clown act.

cheph··on Microsoft Authenticator Chrome Extention is not from MS and is phishing
Either Google doesn't care < this one IMO

Caring removes money from them, at least in add case, so better to shift the bullshit to their "users", who are really the product being sold to advertisers, so who cares. Customer is always right, its just we are not the customer.

cheph··on Microsoft Authenticator Chrome Extention is not from MS and is phishing
Putting this here because Google won't remove it even though it has been reported multiple times.
cheph··on Legalese – Computational Law
The site is horrible. Like really really bad. Hard to read, ugly, confusing. I mean I don't want to be negative, I want to give good feedback, but I can't even copy what i want to respond to.
cheph··on Credit Card Ads Targeted by Age, Violating Facebook’s Anti-Discrimination Policy
I had this option for a while, it went away after I reported a couple of adds. Now I can't report adds anymore.
cheph··on Credit Card Ads Targeted by Age, Violating Facebook’s Anti-Discrimination Policy
I get outright scam ads on YouTube, from YouTube once a week at least, and nothing ever happens to make them stop because I don't care enough to invest the insane amount of effort it will take to reach someone at YouTube that would care enough to stop it. And then the next outright scam add will pop up. So I am not sure by what mechanism this accountability functions if it can't stop blatant scams on YouTube adds.
cheph··on Credit Card Ads Targeted by Age, Violating Facebook’s Anti-Discrimination Policy
> discriminate against any applicant

Does someone who has not applied but that you are just advertising to count as an applicant?

cheph··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
Thanks, that is a much more reasonable statement, and I agree. On the one hand we don't know, but on the other hand a lack of knowledge does not mean everything has equal probabilities.

I personally don't see any good reason to think that the risk for long term side effects from the vaccine is higher for the vaccine than for COVID itself.

cheph··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
> You can never know anything for sure.

But you can? e.g. "We know that there are no side effects that are common enough to be of real concern."?

What deficiency do I have that prevents me from knowing anything for sure that you don't have?

cheph··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
> What long term effects would you anticipate from this?

Maybe you are responding to the wrong person? I never made any claims regarding what long term effects to anticipate. I asked how the person I responded to know there are no serious side effects on time scales longer than we have tested things on.

> There is a good chance for long term effects from covid. Completely the opposite for the vaccine.

Yes. I know.

cheph··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
Maybe you responded to the wrong person. I am in no way suggesting it is better to not take the vaccine, or that there is good reason to think that the risks posed by COVID are less dire than those posed by the vaccines.
cheph··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
> Not a doctor, but from what I've heard from immunologists, vaccines in general are incredibly unlikely to have long-term side effects on the scales that you think about.

Fair enough, but the comment I responded to said: "We know that there are no side effects that are common enough to be of real concern."

Given this statement is not qualified for timescale, I want to know what the basis for it is.

How does the person who made it know there are no side effects on the order of six months or a year that are common enough to be a concern?

Look I am all happy chappy with the vaccine, I will inject that sweet MRNA Pfizer or Moderna vaccines as soon as someone lets me at it, but I still think we need to avoid what Fauci does, which is knowingly lie in order to get people to do what we want them to do.

There is blood clotting risk from AZ? Great, tell me what the risk is and I can deal with it, but lie to me and we are done talking.

cheph··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
> We know that there are no side effects that are common enough to be of real concern

How did they establish that there are no long term side effects?
