chb··on How I run LLMs locally
I’m surprised to see no mention of AnythingLLM (https://github.com/Mintplex-Labs/anything-llm). I use it with an Anthropic API key, but am giving thought to extending it with local LLM. It’s a great app: good file management for RAG, agents with web search, cross platform desktop client, but can also easily be run as a server using docker compose.

Nb: if you’re still paying $20/mo for a feature-poor chat experience that’s locked to a single provider, you should consider using any of the many wonderful chat clients that take a variety of API keys instead. You might find that your LLM utilization doesn’t quite fit a flat rate model, and that the feature set of the third-party client is comparable (or surpasses) that of the LLM provider’s.

edit: included repo link; note on API keys as alternative to subscription

That was a mind-expanding 45-minute talk. Than you for highlighting it.
chb··on Jazz Kissa
Education in the US has devolved to the point where music appreciation is only taught in the most prestigious of private primary and secondary schools, and perhaps in the public schools of wealthy neighborhoods.

It was a surprise to me to discover that Maciej is actually the author behind the idlewords blog. He published this in May of this year: https://idlewords.com/2024/5/the_lunacy_of_artemis.htm

If downvoting “works” on HN, then why is this showing up in “Top Stories”?
chb··on Show HN: I made an app to use local AI as daily driver
This. There was a post in HN last week, iirc, referring to just such a solution called ZenFetch (?). I would have adopted it in a heartbeat but they don’t currently have a means of exporting the source data you feed to it (should you elect it as your sole means of bookmarking, etc)
chb··on Thanks FedEx, this is why we keep getting phished
Not that I’m endorsing the use of smart phones, but FedEx does have a mobile application. Why not just use that for notifications regarding deliveries?
chb··on Launch HN: Zenfetch (YC W23) – Turn notes/browser history into an AI assistant
Perhaps I’m not understanding how this stores data, but how do I retrieve source material after I give it to the app?

Eg. Let’s say I adopt Zenfetch, and start using it as the sole place where I keep bookmarks. Then, something happens such that I want to retrieve that original, principal, bookmark data.

How do I go about retrieving/exporting that?

>You might have to pay for coffee at the office. And it may even be drip!

Uh, no. If you're paying for your own drip coffee, you're working at a convenience store, not in an office. Coffee is for closers and people who write software.

chb··on 1Password for Linux beta
This isn't ready for beta: no ability to delete logins, no ability to generate a new password or create a new login, no context menu, and not even a Cancel button for the user who starts to edit an entry and then realizes that they can't regenerate a password.

chb··on NPM creator: “Not having children is a form of privilege”
"...and the ongoing survival of civilization as we know it literally depends on them continuing to do that grueling job." Wow, there are so many things wrong with this line of thought and sentiment.

Time to switch to yarn!

chb··on Understanding Foreign Interference [pdf]
We have the largest standing army in the world. The same people you refer to as taking up arms for an insurrection are the same people who voted for the increasingly exorbitant defense budgets that made such an army possible. The DoD has a vested interest in a stable and orderly society and, in a stroke of irony, would suppress such an insurrection. Why let small bands of rural reactionaries threaten a military-industrial complex that generates tens of trillions of dollars annually?
chb··on Keybase is not softer than TOFU
I would have thought that these two groups would have more in common than not.

Who do you think constitutes these disparate user bases and how are their perceived expectations different?

chb··on Stepping into the Uncanny, Unsettling World of Shen Yun
Embarrassed to say that my wife and I were duped into purchasing tickets to the show. We had thought it would be a highly choreographed, theatrical re-enactment of significant events in pre-Mao China, and had not done any research on it.

Instead, it was horribly amateurish propaganda (the entire "set" was a projected CG image). Heavy-handed plays for sympathy and the demonization of the Chinese state culminated in a spiritual Armageddon where a Christ-like deity leads his followers out of a world-consuming conflagration.

The audience lapped it up (this was Arizona, by the way). There were no misgivings or complaints voiced as we shuffled out of the theater. We felt suckered, and, to this day, share knowing looks of sheepishness and incredulity when we see billboards around the country advertising the show.

chb··on Suse is once again an independent company
"Few companies have changed hands as often as Suse and yet remained strong players in their business."

"Strong players"? What quantitative evidence exists demonstrating that SuSE has any more than a marginal and insignificant share of server or desktop installs?

chb··on Show HN: Expensive Chat – Pay one cent per letter
"Spend money to chat with strangers who spend money to chat with strangers." That's a demographic that doesn't deserve my time.
chb··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
This. I've been an AirVPN customer for over three years. They have the right combination of locations, Tier 1 technical savvy, OpenVPN support, price, configurability, and, above all, privacy.

Providers I went through before settling on AirVPN: vpn.ht, IPVanish, PIA, Astrill and PureVPN.
