chazeon··on Locally hosting an internet-connected server
Why would you want to expose your IP to the internet? I still feel that's dangerous, susceptible to DDoS attack, and I avoid that as much as possible. I put everything behind a Tailscale for internal use and behind Cloudflare for external use.
chazeon··on A receipt printer cured my procrastination
If it is just chores, gamifying it with a receipt printer would be just fine. But these are just such minor stuff compared to the real challenges of life.
chazeon··on Google is winning on every AI front
I think Amazon, Meta have been trying on inference hardware, they throw their hands up on training; but TPUs can actually be used in training, based on what I saw in Google’s colab.
chazeon··on OpenAI is building a social network?
I think a social network is not necessarily a timeline-based product, but an LLM-native/enabled group chat can probably be a very interesting product. Remember, ChatGPT itself is already a chat.
chazeon··on How I install personal versions of programs on Unix
Yeah, it has been painful previously, but now we get conda / uv, it is in a much better condition right now.
chazeon··on Fetch-MCP: Playwright-Based MCP Server with Batch URL Fetching Support
What's MCP?
chazeon··on Warren Buffett sounds warning to Washington as Berkshire reports record profit
As a PhD new graduate, industry is a far better place than academia under this current government. Academia is suffering heavily from the funding cuts.
chazeon··on Rewriting my website in plain HTML and CSS
There is a tool called entr, it kill and restart command when any file changes are detected, you could check it out.
chazeon··on The best $4 ever spent
Even as an adult I enjoy time when some other person I am spending time with is fully engaged and fully present, I’d call it quality time, but it’s just so rare…
chazeon··on Show HN: Open Scanner, an open-source document scanning app for iPhone
You can actually directly scan in the Files app from the triple dots menu in the upper right corner, this will allow you to directly scan as a PDF file.
chazeon··on Writing a book in the age of open source
To be honest, I don't understand the author's hatred of LaTeX. Maybe the experience is very different than 10 years ago? Today, if you use Overleaf, the experience is not so different from that of Google Docs / the online markdown editor. If you really want a styling other than the default one, there are a bunch of templates you can choose from. You get document history and almost real-time rendering, and you can sync to GitHub if you want. You can self-host the front end. Given Pandoc, you can easily convert it to Word; it is one of the most portable ways to write in an open format. You can collaborate on it. Honestly, it's the easiest way for me to open the browser and edit.
chazeon··on Low Cost Mini PCs
I think shipping costs varies wrt where you live.
chazeon··on Low Cost Mini PCs
Core count is something I would add to the table. These mini PC are good for hobbyists, they are cheaper, stable, faster and easier to maintain than Arm SBCs I have get four of them since pandemic. I can’t wait to see what happen when hyperscaler retire their A100s/H100s.
chazeon··on Apple to upgrade base Macs to 16GB RAM, starting from Apple M4 models
Exactly, and I feel this is true American marketing, and what makes Apple a real California company.

Just like American subway, or airfare, or greyhound buses, or even healthcare: at a high, advertised price, it gives you a standard, but miserable, bare minimum, and unsustainable way of living, and pushing you to pay for a high premium to upgrade to make it bearable, at a price a lot of people can’t afford. It’s why Apple is an American company at heart.

Europe doesn’t do that.

chazeon··on From 14 years old till 29, my experience with desktop Linux
I roughly follow the same path Windows - Linux - macOS - Linux. But nowadays my Linux was mainly using VSCode as a frontend via a MacBook.

However, I spent significant amounts of time using Arch Linux. Compared to stable released Ubuntu etc., I like opportunity to jump on bugs in open source packages and fix them, they have taught me a lot. Using open source software but not its bleeding edge version is a missing opportunity I would say.

chazeon··on Dokku: My favorite personal serverless platform
Typically my servers is behind NAT and it has no public address, one can only reached the service through the CF tunnel and my access is through VPN, this should be safe, right?
chazeon··on Ditch banks – Go with money market funds and treasuries
I want to mention that, typically, if you are a new immigrant, most US brokerages won't serve you because you are not considered a US person in tax; of course, smaller banks won't either, mostly because they won't bother to prepare a different tax form for you; you can only use a bank within that period. But after you become a US person, you have far more choices.

Usually, transfer is also more difficult with a brokerage than a bank; correct me if I was wrong: a) brokerage follows a previous T+3 settlement, now T+1, some banks offer a faster settlement, especially if Zelle is directly available; and b) while doing international wire, the bank is considered a viable target, but brokerage don't, a broker has to use their account opened at a bank, it could be cheaper, but there is more hassle (e.g., some government would allow this for non-business purpose).

But if you are just parking money, these brokerages offer a much better deal; many even offer to reimburse your ATM cost.

chazeon··on LLM-based sentiment analysis of Hacker News posts between Jan 2020 and June 2023
I wonder if using prompts to get the sentiment in LLM is enough? So we do not need to do any fine-tuning anymore?
chazeon··on Google Cloud now has a dedicated cluster of Nvidia GPUs for YC startups
This is already happening.
chazeon··on Tell HN: I am going to host "Real Analysis" book club meetings
Is there a calendar link I can subscribe to?
chazeon··on Calculating the cost of a Google DeepMind paper
If you use solar energy, then there is no CO2 emission. Right?
chazeon··on Reverse engineering Ticketmaster's rotating barcodes
Another case of abusing ToTK, an excellent technology that promised convenience, security, and offline access. Similarly, Duo builds their stuff off ToTK and then fending off (or makes it very, very hard) you from using a third-party ToTK authenticator with their sites. This company just jettisons the fine promise of available offline that was made by ToTK.
chazeon··on Newswire: A large-scale structured database of a century of historical news
Yes, the OCR problem is also very interesting to me. I have been looking into the OCR/labeling field recently, and it seems to still be an actively researched field. There is a surya-ocr that was recently posted to YC, transformer-based, but it is still expensive if running on a really large dataset like 100 years of newspaper. Tesseract doesn't seem to handle this kind of thing very well. In the paper, they just mention it was an active-learning type of method.
chazeon··on Serpentine
Same, I’m studying serpentine mineral
chazeon··on Llama.ttf: A font which is also an LLM
As shown in the video, the font is 280 GB, so opening such a page will practically be a nightmare, especially if you are on cellular.
chazeon··on Show HN: Ritt – Tag-centric file manager
I feel this tool is in the same space as [Eagle][1] and some other image organizers.

On another note, I feel it would be good if it could be used in combination with S3-based storage so one can use it to manage his/her online photo/image collection. Previously, this kind of app was typically a web app.

chazeon··on The LaTeX fetish (Or: Don't write in LaTeX It's just for typesetting) (2016)
When you start to do bibliographic references / cross references word processor documents start to get messy. Zotero/Mendeley doesn’t do well. My professor, who insisted on using Word, often accidentally tripped on macro field, changing them and complain about Word program crashes. Now the only way to generate clean Word documents for her to edit is to write in LaTeX and use Pandoc to “export” to word for her.
chazeon··on Show HN: Extract Data from Line Chart Image
Most of the time, I just use it to scrape original data from screenshots taken from research papers where the data is not provided as a table. I would say 7/8 of these figures are scatter plots from experimental measurements.
chazeon··on Show HN: Extract Data from Line Chart Image
Great to see new tools in this space. So far we have been using WebPlotDigitizer, it has recently released new versions that stopped being open source but moved to be a paid software, requiring login, plastered with AI advertising terms.

chazeon··on Spotify won't open-source Car Thing, but starts refund process
It wasn’t uncommon to buy second hand AC and sell them after use in the NYC. In fact, I barely heard anyone buy new ACs. I guess not everyone has no problem throw those appliances out.
