chaz6··on Show HN: Mephisto – A RAM-only, ad-free disposable email PWA built with React
Is there any reason you need to store them in the RAM on the backend once they have been transferred to the client?
chaz6··on Ask HN: How many people got VPNs in response to laws like UK Online Safety Act?
I am in the UK, and I work for a combined FNO/ISP (a company that owns and operates both the access network and the internet service). It makes me angry that corporations and governments are ruining what was once a thriving network that allowed people to communicate freely with one another. I hope that we will be able to save what remains before it's completely out of our control. My fear is that eventually all devices will be required to have a government-mandated backdoor installed, and anyone found with a non-compliant device will be treated as a criminal.

For now, I used my Hetzner server via Tailscale running fast-socks5 [1] using FoxyProxy [2] (for Mozilla Firefox) which allows me to select a list of domains to re-direct through the socks proxy. I also have Tor installed which is useful when roaming.

chaz6··on Hyperoptic: IPv6 and Out-of-Order Packets
This can be fixed by the ISP by using MPLS control word.

chaz6··on Incus-OS: Immutable Linux OS to run Incus as a hypervisor
It seems to suffer from a chicken and egg problem. To get an image you are supposed to run `incus remote get-client-certificate` to put into the "image customizer", and you cannot generate an image without it. So how do you get started?
chaz6··on Show HN: Trilogy Studio, open-source browser-based SQL editor and visualizer
After dismissing the tips I am greeted with errors:-

  {
    "message": "NetworkError when attempting to fetch resource.",
    "error": true,
    "running": false
  }
If I check the console, it appears to be due to CORS failures.
chaz6··on Tailscale Peer Relays
Is it possible to specify the external ipv4 and ipv6 address? There are scenarios where the eggress traffic uses a different address to ingress, or the host has multiple internet-connected addresses but only one has a firewall permitting traffic to the nominated port.
chaz6··on YouTube is taking down videos on performing nonstandard Windows 11 installs
I use Softmaker Office on Fedora/KDE but Excel is the one Microsoft application I would pay for a Linux version. Even the Office Web version doesn't come close (though it is still a vast improvement).
chaz6··on Let us git rid of it, angry GitHub users say of forced Copilot features
My prefernce is Forgejo

chaz6··on Electric bill may be paying for big data centers' energy use
The wealthy, as usual.
chaz6··on Say Bye with JavaScript Beacon
In networking, there is a similar concept called "dyinggasp" in which a device will send a signal when power is lost. This can help the operator determine if a service is likely to be down due to a power failure or a signal interruption.
chaz6··on De-Googling TOTP Authenticator Codes
I have said time and time again, keep a copy of the QR code (or the text encoded within) before adding it to an authenticator app. You may find out too late that you cannot recover the keys. You can do this by simply taking a photo or screenshot of the QR code and storing it in a safe place.

Even better, avoid any MFA mechanism that relies on short codes with low entropy. Instead you could use U2F which uses a hardware token in which the key material is designed to be extremely difficult to extract, and requires physical access to the device to even attempt.

chaz6··on Google debuts device-bound session credentials against session hijacking
I am glad I got to experience the internet before this. It seems sadly inevitable. What was once built by and for the people has been taken over by the interests of the rich and powerful.
chaz6··on How well does the money laundering control system work?
In the UK one of the best ways to launder money is to open a barber shop. Most people pay cash and unless they are going to watch every shop to see how many customers go through there's simply no way to police it effectively. I have heard that the shop owner will get a commission on any laundered money.
chaz6··on Texas law gives grid operator power to disconnect data centers during crisis
Are they clean enough to stay within the limits of regulations around pollution when run for long periods of time?
chaz6··on Nginx introduces native support for ACME protocol
One of Traefik's shortcomings with ACME is that you can only use one api key per DNS provider. This is problematic if you want to restrict api keys to a domain, or use domains belonging to two different accounts. I hope Nginx will not have the same constraint.
chaz6··on Perplexity offers to buy Google Chrome for $34.5B
How much of that would trickle down to the developers who worked on KHTML on which Chrome is based I wonder. They should feel pretty chuffed that their offspring has resulted in such a large valuation.
chaz6··on GitHub was having issues
Without manual commits, is there any way to record the intention of each change?
chaz6··on If you're remote, ramble
I always ask the "dumb" questions, even when I already know the answer, because there are always people too intimidated to speak up, and it sometimes facilitates a deeper discussion.
chaz6··on Ubiquiti launches UniFi OS Server for self-hosting
I swapped my edgerouter lite (ERLite-3) to an Alta Labs Route10 recently after moving to an ISP that uses PPPoE. Unfortunately the Cavium silicon inside the ERL cannot do hardware offloading for ipv6+vlan+pppoe concurrently, so I had to find a new router. The Route10 is a nice piece of kit, but the software is still very immature, and absolutely requires a controller to manage. I really wish that I could run VyOS on it, but for now it does the job and will probably be absolutely fine for 99% of people.
chaz6··on Python classes aren’t always the best solution
Who needs a singleton when there is @lru_cache(maxsize=1) /s
chaz6··on Use Your Type System
It will not stop you doing this at runtime of course. It is only intended for type checking.
chaz6··on Use Your Type System
The equivalent in Python is:-

  from typing import NewType

  UserId = NewType("UserId", int)
chaz6··on Linux and Secure Boot certificate expiration
I use Fedora and have it enabled. Every time there is a kernel update I have to run a script to re-compile and sign the vmware drivers. I could probably figure out how to do it with dkms at some point. Every now and then, there's a kernel change big enough to make the vmware drivers stop working so I have to get a new patch.
chaz6··on Million Times Million
I am British and the old scale (million, milliard, etc) makes more sense to me as it allows you to describe much larger numbers with fewer words.
chaz6··on Mini NASes marry NVMe to Intel's efficient chip
I have 4 M.2 drives in RAID0 with HDD and cloud backup. So far so good! I'm sure I am about to regret saying that...
chaz6··on Show HN: Rust -> WASM, K-Means Color Quantization Crate for Image-to-Pixel-Art
Is there a way to export a terminal-coded version of the output?
chaz6··on Using the Internet without IPv4 connectivity
If you only need outbound connectivity then you can use a public NAT64 gateway. You can find a list at https://nat64.xyz/
chaz6··on EU rules for durable, energy-efficient and repairable smartphones and tablets
They should be required to place the keys and the initial software build into escrow, so either when a fixed time has elapsed, or they have been found cupable for a breach of an applicable law (e.g. if they stop providing software updates).
chaz6··on Danish Ministry Replaces Windows and Microsoft Office with Linux and LibreOffice
As much as I applaud the move away from proprietary software, when it comes to Office, particularly Excel, there are going to be a LOT of custom macros dotted around that will be difficult to replace, particularly when they integrate with other applications via COM. These are usually written with the best intentions by people wanting to be more productive.
chaz6··on LLMs are cheap
I thought that services like these were run at a loss because the data that users provide is often worth more than the price of a subscription.
