chasing0entropy··on Flight disruption warning as Airbus requests modifications to 6k planes
I would say its pretty detailed -an unknown interference caused a single crc protected 32 bit word to be corrupted simultaneously, by timestamp, in both the flight controller hardware and the black box data recorder.

My concern would be what error correction mechanism did or did not catch the corruption in memory and why did it not recover without critical impact to operations?

chasing0entropy··on Around 500M PCs are holding off upgrading to Windows 11, says Dell
The real number is how many have clean installed and no longer check in.
chasing0entropy··on World War AI
Tremendously well written article, though I think solution point 1 and 2 are not necessary and dilute from point 3 which is the thesis of your article. If we don't restrict AI now, there will be electrical rationing which will become energy rationing (if you can't get electricity & heat, you make it with any fuel available)
chasing0entropy··on AI CEO – Replace your boss before they replace you
Because ultimately every job AI replaces will supplanted by two jonpbs - one to maintain the agent and another to maintain the infrastructure.

I believe once AI scales my theory will be proven universal.

My wife believes there will eventually also be a third job created to do the job.

chasing0entropy··on Replacing My Window Manager with Google Chrome
I'm interested in a how-to which accomplishes the absolute opposite result.
chasing0entropy··on AI Teddy Bears: A Brief Investigation
Article won't load without JavaScript but I can say from personal experience that at the school your child attends, a neighbors house they visit, an imaginary bestie, a friend at the playground, or even an online(but human) gaming buddy have INVALUABLE and distinct characteristics that a doll/screen/furby that interacts with my child could never have.

The device being devoid and incapable of ever possessing a concept of accountability, identity, morals, or even predictable behaviors make it unacceptable as an entertainment, educational, or teaching device.

As a society of billions, we must live, cooperate, empathize, and understand each other in the interests of survival as a species. Playing with AI and LLMs to write code, answer curiosities, and entertain ourselves are innocent enough endeavors regardless of the trillions of dollars wasted; but risking the long term mental health and healthy development of a single child with indefinite exposure to current state LLMs is irresponsible.

chasing0entropy··on AI CEO – Replace your boss before they replace you
Can you design an AI agent that I own, to replace me? This is what the market really wants and is probably one of the ONLY things that doesn't exist.

Just let me subscribe to an agent to do my work while I keep getting a paycheck.

chasing0entropy··on We're losing our voice to LLMs
> it's really not that complicated...

Then lists at least four priorities which would require one multi page bill or more than likely several bills make their way through house, senate, and presidents desk while under fire from every lobbyist in Washington?

chasing0entropy··on We're losing our voice to LLMs
HN let's you choose what order (active, new, top[actual algorithm])

That's not true of Facebook, new does not show you true posts in order of recency.

Reddit still does, bit also injects ads that look like recent posts and actually aren't which is misleading.

chasing0entropy··on China completes first emergency mission to Tiangong space station
"as China and the US race to land on the moon by 2030"

Love this new narrative. It's like the cold war, original moon landing, and other dramatic Apollo missions didn't happen. When ai busts, the next thing will be this artificial space race. Calls on space anything.

chasing0entropy··on Don't Download Apps
On Android there a gotchya - google play services is capable of acting as a transparent proxy so remember you MUST also disables google services framework / play services internet access to truly block some apps from using the web (I learned this when a webcam app 'icsee' bypassed the VPN firewall by using play services proxy network access.

There is a bug in older android which allows data to leak past the VPN while the device is starting and if you disable/enable the VPN connection mid connection.

Facebook appears to have a caching component as it will send a large databurst when it's connection is restored.

Here's a typical article but the reason firewall isn't standard is you won't get ads and that juicy data stream stops. You will find some apps punish you for restrictions to their internet - learn which ones and uninstall them. https://www.airdroid.com/mdm/android-firewall-settings/

chasing0entropy··on Don't Download Apps
That's an easy one, hold my beer:

Pwa with permissions granted gives access to: Location, create notification, phone state, phone #, IMEI, motion data

Mobile app with permissions gives access to EVERYTHING a pwa gets PLUS, Contacts, sms, notification content, biometrics data, web browsing data, phone activity history, location history, camera access, microphone access, NFC access, near device history, nearby wifi listing, saved wifi networks, Bluetooth device ID, Bluetooth beacons nearby, some device settings, personal data access(photos/music)

chasing0entropy··on Don't Download Apps
I'll do you one better, download a no root firewall that channels all of your traffic through a fake VPN which then drops it. You will be amazed at how many ads you don't see.

Obviously if you're not competent or are lazy with whitelisting apps when you need them to use the internet and then disabling it again this will be unhelpful to you; continue to feed the machine.

chasing0entropy··on The Tesla Model Y Just Scored the Worst Reliability Rating in a Decade
Do you know where most performance and luxury vehicles beyond mass manufactured models are designed?
chasing0entropy··on OpenAI needs to raise at least $207B by 2030
Human thought is more than just general intelligence (AGI), but the ability to conceptualize data beyond linear symbolic representations and to combine the schema / metadata from multiple contextual inputs with memory, to output unique concepts in both alphanumeric and other conceptualized manners.

An LLM, in addition to being unable to ever obtain true AGI because of the linear and singular representation of concepts and data, cannot combine multiple schemas or metadata from multiple contexts with its own training and reinforcement data.

That means it cannot truly remember and correct its mistakes. A mistake is more than the observation and correction, it is applying global changes to both your metadata and schema of the event and surrounding data.

LLMs as an AI solution is a dead end.

chasing0entropy··on Nvidia says its GPUs are a 'generation ahead' of Google's AI chips
Nvidia GPUs have always been a generation ahead of the rest... Because no one else has seen any value is developing GRAPHICS processors for gamers.

Nvidia had an edge in CUDA support but they were and are not anywhere near a generation ahead in CUDA acceleration.

Take a step closer to present with tensor processing and Nvidia is actually just getting started. GOOGLE has more experience with datacenter clustered TPUs and tensor acceleration; they are just waiting for the h100 to reach its peak lifecycle (~4 months) before they obsolete it and "release" a catch phrase and model number.

chasing0entropy··on Show HN: Why do coding interviews expose your whole desktop. Here's a fix
You do realize on windows or *nix you could just create a new desktop and move your interview apps to that desktop?

Further, I don't know any serious devs (hardware of software) that don't have a second (sterile) device to use for low trust interactions.

chasing0entropy··on Windows GUI – Good, Bad and Pretty Ugly (2023)
The disagreement isn't what makes him not serious; the hubris to declare Windows 11 the most usable OS does.

No one who has any real experience with *nix, legacy ios, legacy Windows, and modern Windows/ios UI/UX would rate win11 top without serious qualifiers

chasing0entropy··on Windows GUI – Good, Bad and Pretty Ugly (2023)
Windows 11 usability is garbage compared to Windows 10. Windows 10 already had multiple desktops, docking(which does need app to augment), sandboxing, and the start menu worked. Further win 10 does not gimp the OS if not activated, doesn't require an online account, and has an identical update mechanism to win11.

There is nothing superior or even functionally 'new' in Windows 11 besides compute burning eye candy and embedded backdoored encryption

If Windows 7 had multi core enhancement, driver downloading, and updated libraries it would still be a superior OS from a weight of resources perspective.

chasing0entropy··on EPA just approved new 'forever chemical' pesticides for use on food

chasing0entropy··on The Cloudflare outage might be a good thing
Spot on article, but without a call to action. What can we do to combat the migration of society to a centralized corpro-government intertwined entity with no regard for unprofitable privacy or individualism?
