chaseha··on Americans can opt out of airport facial recognition
Convenience or privacy, it's a tough choice to make. I'm thankful for Global Entry / Clear having to travel most weeks for work
chaseha··on How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy
Just put it on my reading list based on the article. Now for getting around to actually reading it ;)
chaseha··on The Affluent Homeless: A Sleeping Pod, a Hired Desk and a Handful of Clothes
That's an important distinction to make. "Homeless" carries a large negative connotation and lumping in relatively affluent people like this dilutes the large issue of homelessness [not by choice] faced by so many
chaseha··on The Secret Rules For Getting Hired
There are lots of issues with traditional hiring approaches - would recommend looking into Performance-Based Hiring if you are a hiring manager looking to improve your process and outcomes
chaseha··on A Journey into the Minds of Silicon Valley Programmers (Book Review)
Book sounds interesting. Democratization of programming knowledge can only benefit us in the long run
chaseha··on The Challenge of Going Off Psychiatric Drugs
The article speaks to how this phrase is a shortcut that doesn't get to the fact that mental health issues like depression can have a range of factors behind them including genetics and environmental factors
chaseha··on Ways to manage your time better
Yes, but there is more helpful detail in the article. Specifically taking five minutes each morning to block out my calendar for specific tasks is something that has greatly improved my working days
chaseha··on Generating More of My Favorite Aphex Twin Track
I find that perfectly quantized tracks sound artificial over time. Not sure how close “aisatsana” sticks to perfectly on-(half)-beat, but adding slightly random quantization offsets to each generated note could be interesting to lend the results a more "natural" sound
chaseha··on Generating More of My Favorite Aphex Twin Track
Yes. My favorite Aphex Twin track.

Relatedly, would strongly recommend the Booka Shade DJ-Kicks album - Alberto Balsam is one of the tracks they selected https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onLPjryBtns

chaseha··on Life on the wrong side of China’s social credit system
Along that line, if the US had a similar system, our current president would have been marked a "deadbeat" long before he got the chance to run for office (not saying the system is right, just saying)
chaseha··on Interviews with developers who became managers
Great post, great example - I'm going to try and apply this analytical/process optimization mindset to more of these "softer" management tasks. Thank you
chaseha··on First-class air travel is in decline
*First class is in decline, rather. Don't think it will ever disappear, mostly for the first reason the article says - the upgrade chance as a carrot to keep business traveler loyalty
chaseha··on Boeing 787 Reaches 801 MPH as a Jet Stream Packs Record-Breaking Speeds
Would it be nice? Flying is already a tremendous environmental burden with the focus on fuel economy. I'm happy to sit in my seat a few minutes longer if it means taking away some of that emissions impact
chaseha··on In Screening for Suicide Risk, Facebook Takes on Tricky Public Health Role
Slightly off-topic, but mindfulness approaches have been shown to improve depression and are an important part of CBT/DBT used by therapists everywhere
chaseha··on Federal judge finds state law governing who is an engineer violates free speech
Completely disagree. It says he can call himself an engineer in a non-professional context.

Having a ChBE BS, I am an engineer (although no longer working as one). I am not a Professional Engineer (not a licensed PE). There’s a difference - doesn’t mean I should not be able to call myself an engineer, and I’m sure others w engineering degrees would agree

chaseha··on America's Startup Scene Is Looking Anemic
Well said. I think the reason it's easy to feel that people at the C-Suite don't produce value is the "leadership" qualities that matter are very hard to define, and success or failure often doesn't make itself clear until months or years down the road.

As a lower-level employee, sometimes you think that the company would be successful without a leader, or even is successful in spite of poor leadership - while that may sometimes be true, much of what happens at that level is hard to understand unless you've been there

chaseha··on Accountancy used to be boring and safe, but today it’s neither
FWIW I don't think companies are allowed to purchase consulting services from their auditor, specifically because of this conflict of interest. In my experience, companies will have one of the big four as their primary auditor, than use some combination of the other three for consulting (in addition to MBB or any other firms).

In no way defending the value of these services though - their primary function is to shift culpability off of the executives IMO

chaseha··on Reddit just passed Facebook as #3 most popular website in US
A lot of that may be due to the way Facebook has changed their algorithms in the last few years. I know that both Pages and Groups that don't pay for engagement have had huge issues with their content no longer showing up in follower's feeds. Could be that rather than users "ignoring" the group
chaseha··on Why did I spend 1.5 months creating a Gameboy emulator? (2017)
Wario Land 3 was a great game. Hmm, makes me want to find that old GBC I have lying around somewhere
chaseha··on Seaweed in Cow Feed Reduces Methane Emissions Almost Entirely
Also wondering this. The article mentions the difficult problem of scaling up red algae farming - could the active ingredient not be synthesized commercially and added to feed that way?

edit, from Wikipedia: "The substance may be hazardous to the environment, and special attention should be given to aquatic organisms. Its volatility and environmental persistence makes bromoform's release, either as liquid or vapor, strongly inadvisable. ... Bromoform is a confirmed animal carcinogen" Although I presume the bromoform binds to the enzymes and/or otherwise reacts in the stomach, as usual there are pros and cons associated with this sort of thing

chaseha··on Mindfulness may have been over-hyped
The comments here so far seem to be focusing on the click-baity title... the article is actually a good review of mindfulness research and next steps in the field
chaseha··on “Lifefaker.com makes faking perfection easy”
HPV vaccinations are now recommended for both genders for people under the age of 26 for the most part
chaseha··on IBM is not doing "cognitive computing" with Watson (2016)
And that, folks, is enterprise software services/consulting in a nutshell!!
chaseha··on To Change Habits, Try Replacement Instead
various stir fries are great for that
chaseha··on The health care toll today’s work culture exacts on employees
Well, for one, I like what I do. And thus far I've been able to manage it by making some changes, over time. Basically all of these I learned about from other HN threads:

* first, switching between using L and R hands for mouse

* eventually, purchased a new mouse: Evoluent VerticalMouse 4 Right - neutralizes your wrist on mouse hand

* software that forces you to take breaks instead of just sitting and typing for hours straight. Workrave is what I use (http://www.workrave.org/) - freeware and lightweight. I take 12 second micro-breaks every 4.5 minutes and a 4 minute break ever 25. Get up, stretch around, wiggle your arms. Staring at a far away corner of the room helps w/ eye strain too

* for plane rides - small, wireless trackball has worked wonders. I can't use a laptop touchpad worth a damn

chaseha··on The health care toll today’s work culture exacts on employees
Dealing w/ RSI has been an eye opener for me. What makes it worse: working on a laptop, working on the plane, having to do long hours in poor ergonomic conditions. What do I have to do to be good at my job? Basically, that. What happens if it gets worse and I can no longer use a computer for at least eight hours a day? That is my livelihood
chaseha··on Show HN: Six Degrees of Wikipedia
RL == "Real Life"
chaseha··on Borneo Lost More Than 100k Orangutans from 1999 to 2015
Did you write your TL;DR before reading the article?

All three of the quotes you added aren't talking about poaching, they are talking about killing of orangutans. This could be done because they are a nuisance or locals see them rummaging through trash or what-not.

Ctrl+F in the article for "poach" - zero hits

chaseha··on Dear Apple, please fix notifications
A not great ad - the squished notification format looks terrible
chaseha··on Bitcoin May Split Many Times in 2018
Most of these forks add nothing of value. I don't see forks replacing ICOs at all, as the article suggests - they serve different purposes (besides the fact that both may serve as a pure money grab by unscrupulous parties)
