charwalker··on USB3: Why it's a bit harder than USB2
I knew it! I had a 'gaming' type very comfortably shaped mouse but it used a specific 2.4ghz adapter. Any time I did a large file transfer over USB3.0, any flash drive replicated the issue, the mouse would become jumpy and unusable plus WiFi speeds dropped to maybe 10% for the duration of the transfer. I ended up giving the mouse to a friend and going back to my first gen MX Master.

charwalker··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued (2012)
At one place I've been, the engineers held this same view but would need to move somewhere far off or to the parent company across the country. Also, some might have jumped to more money only for the new employer to learn they aren't very good engineers. I was IT and often was setting up or resolving EE dev issues because they wrote code with a gui and didn't actually now how the hardware worked or connected to their PC reliably. Or it was all on the one offline XP laptop that dual boots to Win2000. They might have an $8k+ engineer dev station with secure VMs for Xp an 2k but still used the old laptop because it was familiar...

Talking about to provide a platform for conversation of a phenomenon to understand it or talking about it to push the conclusions because they think they are valid? Genuine question as I haven't followed that podcast.
charwalker··on As Their Numbers Grow, Covid-19 “Long Haulers” Stump Experts
I think this is the correct take on the top level comment. It is more dismissive than needed but is trying to get the point across that the data cannot speak for itself and is amplified by the voices of the patients seeking answers. Modern medicine may have clues but no single answer or test to confirm. We won't have anything definitive and applicable to the general population without proper research and an adequate sample size.
charwalker··on The US is using the Guardian to justify jailing Assange for life
If I'm improperly accused of sexual assault (totally innocent) I'll hear that case out instead of hiding in my man cave at a foreign embassy while still making contact with questionable foreign intelligence figures.
charwalker··on The US is using the Guardian to justify jailing Assange for life
To avoid criminal charges beginning with sexual assault and rape allegations, I think, not from the US. Which may have been a tactic to extradite him before other charges but as others have said here, he is a terrible personality to have in this situation as he's polarizing and contentious at the best of time.

When groups like the ACLU have pushed issues via lawsuits its often with a very specific, media attention perfect client like Rosa Parks who cannot be vilified or attacked for a past criminal record or documented issues with society and law enforcement. Not because those people don't deserve representation but because their cases were too easy to strike down and prevent progress on the underlying issue. We see this today with so many validating the killing of George Floyd because of a past criminal record or recent behavior without eve considering if those actions deserved a death sentence or night in jail. It's sad but it's true.

charwalker··on People expect technology to suck because it sucks
My manager had to buy new headphones as when she is WFH she used airpods and iphone to connect to calls and the irpods constantly cycled leaving garbage audio whenever she tried to speak.

I'm using a BT Jabra headset, with noise cancelling I got for about the same cost, 16+ hours of battery, easy pairing and super useful phone app, great ANC, and solid audio quality, at least to a non-audiophile. My biggest complaint is the closed back design leaves my ears a bit irritated after 4+ hours of use. Not an airpods competitor but for the cost I am way happier.

charwalker··on How to say no, for the people pleaser who always says yes
Consider that in the US you could immigrate west and the government would give you land if you set up a homestead, at least in the mid 1800's.

There's also a literature reference to I think Little House on the Prairie where the father sees another family coming into the valley and decides they need to pack up and leave.

There is a long history of US travel out west to get land and space regardless, or maybe because, of how far away from others you can get.

charwalker··on Frugality Is Non-Linear (2019)
Which, other than not electing a GOP president and Congress, can't be predicted beyond rough cycles. It's scary, it's hypothetical, and combined with basic social safety nets in place today are unlikely to sink a FIRE plan that is robust.

That isn't a political statement about the GOP, it's close to fact. When did we last not enter a recession, or the possibilities of one, after the GOP held Congress and the White House? Trump, Bush, Bush Sr/Reagan. Its like part of the plan is to drive the nation broke after concentrating wealth with donors and friends/family.

charwalker··on U.S. Justice Dept weighs stripping federal funds from cities allowing 'anarchy'
Go figure why the GOP wishes to add another SCoutUS judge with 1.5 months to the election, unlike precedent set in 2016 by McConnell's senate along with vocal support from Senator Graham.
charwalker··on U.S. Justice Dept weighs stripping federal funds from cities allowing 'anarchy'
If you label a rival political other as an enemy of the state, especially when groups that support the state are known be more violent and deadly to Americans (police/white nationalists), that is inherently fascistic.

A fascist government will not announce it is but rather that antifascists are enemies of the state. This has already happened and is simply ramping up. It will lead to stochastic terror and more bloodshed.

charwalker··on U.S. Justice Dept weighs stripping federal funds from cities allowing 'anarchy'
No. Some state take in billions more in federal tax dollars then they send in with states like Alabama and Kentucky often at the top of the list. Without California and New York floating most red states they'd be sunk.

https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/05/which-s...

This is why when a red state chooses to lower taxes or otherwise increase their reliance on federal help I laugh at the hypocrisy of the bootstraps party and wonder why my federal taxes, in a blue state without federal support, should go to such irresponsible people.

charwalker··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
Yeah, Obama had 8 years of criminal justice reform and fighting injustice. Trump pardoned his close friend who was convicted of lying to protect the president and threatened the judge hearing his case.

Obama pardoned 1 person for perjury and they weren't even connected to him.

charwalker··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
https://www.justice.gov/pardon/obama-pardons

https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Justice/2017/0120/On-Obama-s-l...

Go ahead and review Obama's pardons and check for bias. He had an extra 4 years to fill with a legacy of criminal justice reform and forgiveness. I see 1 entry for perjury, a 3 month sentence, and no entries of past employees, advisors, friends, or contacts who plead guilty to or were convicted of crimes connected to the president. Trump pardoned Stone after he literally threatened the judge involved in his case on social media, an open threat against the entire US justice system. Recently a NJ judge's house was attacked and family members killed by someone who took action on that type of threat.

Trump pardoned someone who threatened a judge AND was convicted of lying to protect Trump. Perhaps he should face a second round of impeachment for such abuses of power.

What about judges though? In Obama's last year, an election year, the Senate held open over 100 judge positions including refusing to even hear a SCotUS pick (Garland). Obama had 324 picks confirmed over 8 years or about 40 per year. Trump has had 194 in his 3.5 years including that open SCotUS seat plus 1 or about 55 per year, a nearly 40% increase over Obama. Also, many of these lifetime justices are young, promoted by right wing interest groups including pseudo campaigns for SCotUS seats, and often rated unqualified or unexperienced by various Bar associations which is not only unprecedented but an incredible overreach by the Senate. McConnell held open over 100 seats for Trump to fill but continues to confirm judges for an impeached president in an election year. These justices may have 40+ year careers as partisan hacks disrupting our legal system which already suffers from insane structural racism and inequality (both things Obama was tearing down until his last day on the job).

Trump has appointed 2 SCotUS justices (one who likes to boof and drink) and 40% more judges than Obama, year to year, even after his impeachment and during an election year.

https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2018/06/04/senate-obst...

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/07/15/how-trump-c...

Even if "most" of Trump's pardons were "blatantly corrupt", the fact that he has pardoned those who could implicate him in crimes and corruption and not those with unjust sentences, evidence of innocence, or convicted of breaking laws no longer on the books is downright indefensible and an indictment of his character and corruption as well as blank check from the GOP to cover up hypocritically instilling partisan justices.

It's important to question things and come to your own, well research and evidence based views on issues and events. Some of us have extensive education or experience in reviewing history and politics so the information is readily available or easy to find and it is important to understand where systems are broken and where people are breaking systems that work well when run by honest citizens, like the USPS. Obama definitely had more pardons but also used the power with humility and a conscience to fight injustice, not to further his own ends and protect himself from investigation.

It's real hard to argue that the bulk of US Intelligence services got this wrong especially as more time passes. For example, compare it to the Iraq WMD claims that were critical in swaying opinion (or validating a vote) but were shown to be misleading at best as reports surfaced. We have had a ton of whistleblowers and reports within the current administration that suggest that the intelligence services are solid, especially at the start of the current presidential term, wile it is the leadership itself with a long list of lies and false claims meant to sow discord and division. The FBI has been calling out white nationalism for decades but only recently are we seeing militias march into state capitols or take over government buildings by force, or police unions defend cops with words like "Get F*," on their rifle.

I'm sticking with the 007 analysis that UK intel is golden and the US contact is about as cowboy as a spy can get but won't stand injustice.

charwalker··on Spotify reportedly fighting with employees about hosting episodes of Joe Rogan
This is a private company making its own decisions, not the government.

Also, cancel culture is a catch-22 where those who named and bash it frequently turn to it all the same by going after private companies and persons like Ted Cruz trying to boycott Nike this summer. It's almost an oxymoron. Everyone does it to some degree and it is a perfectly lawful way to vote with your wallet aka boycott those with opinions or actions counter to your morals. Personally I find Trumps fraudulent use of his NY charity, shut down after he settled fraud charges, more than enough reason to boycott him and those who support him. If that's cancel culture, then good.

Inner cities often see escalated violent crime compared to rural and suburban areas. However I can't find a source suggesting inner city minorities are single issue voter for gun control.

I did find several where minorities refused to vote GOP due to racism and related issues but I'd consider that decency not single issue.

Meanwhile I can list my Grandma's entire church as mostly single issue related to abortion rights, or at least that's what the current leadership preaches.

By voting against their interest, I'm considering that the GOP has had platform planks, policy options, or new laws/rules related to reducing farm subsides, setting up tariffs that bring counter actions that destroy entire US farming groups, refuse to acknowledge climate change is real let alone human driven, curtailing regulations around safe pesticides or environmental efforts in general, and reducing rural outreach like cuts to USPS, voting access, and more.

It seems odd that a group of often rural and farm related folks would vote for a party that has succeeded in reducing their subsidies, axing their crop values internationally via revenge tariffs, refusing to acknowledge why droughts are sweeping the nation and doing nothing to counter them, and reducing their access to mail and levers of democracy would be against their core interests.

But hey, the rich have lower taxes and the poor can't get healthcare, jobs, retirement, home ownership, and the chances of preventing massive droughts and climate change related issues are nil so all is right for the GOP.

What's the Matter with Kansas is a deeper look into the Kansas aspects of this. It's an interesting read and very relevant as just back in 2016 they tried to ax taxes across the state and schools closed, hospitals started to shut down, roads fell apart, and more until the state supreme court ordered the legislature to fund basic services and the GOP dominated state legislature had to override the governors veto to pass higher taxes. At this point, cutting taxes seems to be the biggest right wing driver apart from protecting Trump.

Of course, if the GOP gets into office then floods you with more subsidies because their actions would otherwise destroy your entire national industry, perhaps its more about selfish people being selfish than voting against their interests. If US farmers didn't have tariffs shredding their markets and driving demand to Brazil and other nations, maybe they wouldn't need more bailout money than the US auto sector in 2009. So far I think they are up to about 2x the auto bailout but that was a year ago.

So much for person responsibility and fiscally conscious conservatives. The deficit hasn't mattered since Obama left office apparently.

charwalker··on Raspberry Pi as a local server for self hosting applications
Newer Pi's do support booting to USB drives (flash or SATA adapter) and I think the firmware update enabling that on the 3/3b/4/4b allows SATA hats and others to work but I haven't read into or tested any of them.

Booting to USB protects the install better, allows easier access or setup on a PC, and I have more of them around to set up random OS or systems to test. I have several pis around and each that can boots to USB including the pihole systems at my parents place and grandma's apartment.

Plus, the SD copier tool in Raspbian works with USB drives (and VHDs) so I set up the pihole for my grandma, cloned the usb drive, then sent both drives to her with the pi and called to walk her through plugging things in then used my existing remote tool on her laptop to finish set up. Now she has a backup USB drive that may need updates but is ready to go if the existing USB fails with pihole ready and everything. Plus once I update the backup drive I can clone it to the corrupt USB and she can store that as backup.

I know many people have hard lines for supporting friends/family. I've taken it in stride with super useful setups for relatives (pihole and a remoting tool if I set up their laptop/desktop) and beer or similar cost for friends. One recently spilled warm garlic sauce in their laptop so I pulled it apart while they scrubbed and wiped and some local beer is cheaper than a new laptop any day.

charwalker··on Microsoft submits Linux kernel patches to enable complete Hyper-V on Linux
My reading is this allows HyperV Server (standalone, free) to be Linux based.

But I could me misunderstanding this as the ability to run HyperV on Linux baremetal much like Windows 10 with HyperV installed or Windows Server with HyperV role.

As a Windows guy, I can appreciate this. HyperV Server is already free, though requires some care and feeding if set up off a domain.

charwalker··on Birds 'falling out of the sky' in mass die-off in south-western US
Sounds like a bunch of science deniers. Weird to have those on a tech forum but I guess it takes all types.

There have been many pans proposed, such as the Green New deal, to combat climate change, create stable jobs, and in many other ways improve the nation. But when 1/3 of the voters don't want change and would rather descend back into the racism and xenophobia of the 50's (except for the taxes) then not much can be done.

charwalker··on Birds 'falling out of the sky' in mass die-off in south-western US
There is a large chunk of the US voter population that thinks that even if climate change is real it isn't human driven and therefor totally natural or by God's design.

So of course nothing should be done about it because either it isn't real or it isn't human caused.

This is also the group that often votes single issue or directly against their best interest much like What's the matter with Kansas. Surprisingly, Kansas itself hasn't read that book and seems to repeat history every time the GOP wants less taxes.

charwalker··on We View Nikola’s Response as a Tacit Admission of Securities Fraud
The regulatory process failed but was revealed. Hopefully Germany will do better.

But the US has more companies and activities going on and likely more fraud just by volume if not the regulatory capture and other issues from the current administration like secretaries who want to dismantle their departments. The administration itself is fraudulent, laundering campaign money to private property or court/lawyer costs, or simply rewarding friends like the current USPS head donating a bunch of money to the GOP then getting their position while holding millions in stock of USPS competitors. It's just so blatant and corrupt but nothing happens.

charwalker··on Bella Thorne, OnlyFans and the battle over monetising content
I don't, mostly because he's a celebrity character and anything he says is a PR release from his business. He just seems to trend up with various viral moments or activities like recording/streaming inside a bathroom full of people at a convention. It makes sense that someone who lives (literally) on hype and attention would generate that whenever possible to further their brand, just like a Kardashian. With that in mind, some unspoken ban, real or not/insinuated or not, is an excellent chance to set up a big story when you're back in the office and working again. Easy cover for time off and solid cash back once streaming again.

If the business is not profitable when following regulations and laws on employee rights then it will dissolve unless some group is willing to fund the red ink.

In this case, that long term may be self driving cars or the value of the ecosystem and install base.

But most American companies operate in ways that are extremely anti-employee and concentrate wealth at the top, if successful. Many of them could not operate in other first world nations. Could you image some employers you've had planning for team members to have an $11 hour minimum wage, up to 6 weeks of paid sick leave or up to 70% for more time, 24 days of vacation to start, 6 weeks off before giving birth and up to 8 weeks after (paid) for maternal and paternal leave, and more strictly followed regulations on worker protected classes/benefits/hours.

EX: https://www.howtogermany.com/pages/employee-rights.html

My employer could because they offer benefits close to much of the EU benefits package from the start, with relatively good medical/etc and minimal premiums. Could yours? Could McDonalds? Could Uber?

charwalker··on Bella Thorne, OnlyFans and the battle over monetising content
He's been banned before for issues like recording in bathrooms at cons. It's all an act but streaming can be a 12+ hour day and it makes sense for his character to 'get banned' especially when Twitch/etc won't comment and he can take a summer vacation. He'll re-enter with some drama that'll make headlines then be back up and running again with plenty of subscribers.
