I like that a lot. Nice idea, if a little dangerous. I'm assuming it's jailed because all the system headers are there.

Just a heads-up- your 'about' says Ruby code instead of C.

If you've mentioned Bateson in the list with those other names then I will certainly look him up - thank you for that. I would also add Jung to that list (he was an influence on McKenna, as well as Watts).

I misunderstood and was answering the question how I literally read it; how I saw what Buddhist philosophy was and how it related to Zen. You've misunderstood my perspective though - I can entertain what I believe the object of Buddhism to be without subscribing to it. I may have done Vipassana but I don't believe it to be an answer. I wasn't even looking for answers; it's another experience on the journey (I did get lot's from it though). However, that is what Buddhism - as I understand it - purports to be: the art of living, the middle way and finding balance (through that you find liberation). Zen tries to find that level but does away with the scripture, the individual tries to find it through experience.

I'm not the OP but i would like to pitch in with my thoughts -the object of Buddhism is the philosophy of Buddhism, and that object is the art of living; the art of living is what they would say at a Vipassana retreat. Zen - you take Buddhism and chuck away the books, while trying to find the experiential basis of that object.

If you find yourself voyaging on certain seas through life, Alan Watts is a good - if not necessary - port to call on.

By far one of the most satisfactory things (and also hair reducing things) I've had as a long term hobby is: O/S development. Been doing it seriously for just over a year now, it's slow because it is purely free time. Was working happily on the kernel but decided to go back and build a bootloader after I got to higher half kernel and was messing around with the GDT base address overflow hack. It's now turned into a multi-stage boot loader, because I appreciate the idea of your system have full control over your own partition, nothing else.

I enjoy going to http://wiki.osdev.org for a broad overview and then hitting the manuals for the details; sometimes that manual and note book session can take up to 3 days of my free time haha.

I especially love writing custom tools around the development process; I like to call it reducing reliance - I found that this really helps solidify concepts in my mind; although making the process even slower, I feel comfortable at every stage.

Because they would become monstrous behemoths that did everything at a lower quality. For instance - Mixcloud and Soundcloud each serve a real purpose, separate from one another. It may seem like they do the same thing (connecting people over music) but really they have refined their respective systems around what they are built for - focus on single tracks and the other on music sets. Now if google started doing that, it would not be anywhere near as refined because their platform would have to serve other purposes; if facebook started hosting repositories it would be diluted with everything else they do.
