chansiky··on A Little Money Laundering Can Have a Big Impact on Real Estate Prices (2019)
Foreign capital influx isn't bad unless the capital that is being traded is bad, which in this case it very likely is.

On the direct trade it's a win for both sides, the side with bad money turns it good, and the the side with the asset converts it into capital (just like every other trade, which is always a win for both sides), but not at a broader level where illegitimate funds enter the system and become legitimate, whereby the one producing the illegitimate funds are the true victors, stealing away with real value while the rest of the market is destabilized for introducing illegitimate turned legitimate extra capital.

To clarify, by not doing due diligence and allowing funds created in a nontransparent shadow banking system to enter the real market, you are giving the power of printing money to a foreign entity.

chansiky··on A Little Money Laundering Can Have a Big Impact on Real Estate Prices (2019)
In effect, you're saying that Vancouver has become the laundromat of converting illegitimate capital produced under a shadow banking system into real valuable assets.

This is bad for everyone else in our global economic system. It would be akin to someone in a game of monopoly accepting counterfeit money. The rest of the players have to play the game with actual monopoly rules while one player is allowed to make up whatever they want. Guess who's going to win that game?

Of course its a shadow banking system for a reason, because keeping everything hidden gives them a cheaters advantage. Revealing what happens there would be admitting to cheat and fraud.

China is seriously going full force with deception, passive aggression, claiming innocence, claiming moral high ground, while doing everything that is in the book of machiavellian/art-of-war tactics, and the rest of the world is doing nothing about it. (hardly surprising given their cultural mythologies and inclinations which differ vastly from for example a "liberty, justice, and freedom-for-all" mantra that is the foundation and aspiration of a different nation)

chansiky··on Google's new logos are bad
I agree. Having come from the design world, pretty much most design critiques are bike sheds. Should the shed be red? no lets make it google colors instead. Make all sheds google colored because it will improve KPI's! (answer: it wont)

There is no subjectivity to when anyone says new logos are bad. I remember people were saying Airbnb's logo looks like a dong, thats pretty much the worst you could do as a designer, and now no one even cares. In fact its recognizable and unique. Its like telling someone they have a bad face. Ok what if the face has a crooked nose? its not symmetrical? Does that even matter? If its distinguishable and recognizable that's all you need.

At the end of the day its just branding. As long as you can get it to stick inside people's neurons then its doing its job.

chansiky··on Ask HN: I have 3 weeks off, what should I build?
Dont ever listen to what people think you should be doing. Just because other people think you work too hard or because they judge you for being too nerdy or w/e the case might be. Who cares (of course they do but... thats a reflection of them), If you want to code in your break then code in your break, and own it. Let them go around taking shrooms or playing world of warcraft, or watch netflix. That's fun for them, you do you. And if anyone asks why you dont know what its like to be on acid then just press ignore/delete and move on. They have no right to condescend because they like shrooming-off more than you do.
chansiky··on Delete Facebook and You'll Lose All Oculus Games for Good
They clearly believe the benefits they gain from requiring facebook outweighs the benefits of keeping users who will leave.

Considering their revenue model, its not a surprise. But that sort of means that they also better believe they can build tech that is better than their competitors who wont have this drawback.

chansiky··on Lloyd's Coffee House
Yes, but have people met here and spun off a new company from their conversations?

There's something significant missing from comment based interactions that exist in IRL interactions.

chansiky··on Underrated predictor of success: willingness to be low-status
A lot of people simply can't handle the cognitive dissonance that pangs the mind when they are lower status than they were before. Cognitive dissonance creates undue mental stress until resolved. If one can't resolve it by deflating their ego, then the dissonance between reality and one's self perception won't allow them to stay in a position of low status for very long. Thus they get stuck in relative peaks, unable to descend from their high position, to start fresh from a point that allows them to climb the right peak.
chansiky··on Ask HN: What are some problems solved in unrelated domains?
How so? They are effectively a `<link/>` IRL. I would say the UX is pretty good. I don't know how much easier it can get than pulling out your camera then taking a picture using the camera app.
chansiky··on Show HN: Rentify – Build your rental empire today
This is actually a great idea, if a good one doesn't already exist. I only clicked because I've been thinking about what a good one might look like.
chansiky··on Overmind.js – Frictionless State Management
Having used hooks to replace my state at some point I couldn't agree more. Application state should not be dependent on components, rather components should be dependent on application state.

My recommendation is keep hooks and contexts for ui state only, like form fields/validations, modal popups, drawer collapse, filter options, etc, but for things dealing with more general application state which the ui will display, like user information, products list, project data, application settings, etc, a separable state machine should be used. This works well because components are responsible for their own state leaving the state manager clean from individual ui component information, and ui components are free to be passed whatever data improving reusability.

chansiky··on Look ma, no mouse: Vimium
I found Surfingkeys far more configurable than Vimium. I too looked at the alternatives and think its the best of the bunch. I'll have to try those mappings, seems like good tweaks.
chansiky··on Ask HN: Do you think 'normal' working will ever return?
Just adding another opinion to the poll. I think this is an extreme scenario, but it also is a shift towards a new "normal". The inefficiency of commute, and the ease of not traveling to work everyday is a thing many people would love to reduce. Pushing buttons on a television screen has been largely eliminated by remotes because it simply requires less mental energy and I think the workforce will fight for it simply because people are lazy.

Also, I would WFH for the paycut, and that's because technically I'm not home at the moment - and that is potentially more valuable than what the extra money would have bought.

chansiky··on Kitty – A fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
This is also why I use kitty instead of terminal.app. I just can't get colors working for vim. Otherwise, its surprisingly fast. Much better than iTerm imo.
chansiky··on I Took My Startup From $20k/month to 0
Even Adobe at some point tried to compete with Word/Excel. Word processing sounds like it would be one of the most crowded markets.
chansiky··on Cities Experiment with Remedy for Poverty: Cash, No Strings Attached
Psychological side effects aside, the economic math really points towards UBI. Current economic strategies really favor constant consumer spending to keep the wheel turning, and one of the best ways to do so is to make sure the bottom layer is fed.

We haven't gotten here by accident either. What about raising the minimum wage? What about lowering interest rates? Its a sign that people including the wealthy and powerful are worried about an economic collapse. I don't think the labor participation rate or psychological ramifications are really on their minds as much as their fear of economic loss.

chansiky··on Netflix CEO explains why he pays technologists huge salaries
Exactly how I see it.

Good code builds and compounds on itself. It makes every developer on the team more productive. Its not just about the output of the single "10x" developer. Just having them on your team increases your whole team's output, even after they've left. Sometimes other "10x" developers build on top of that work.

Bad code also builds and compounds on itself. Same argument but in reverse. At some point the codebase becomes so unwieldy, someone will have to convince the manager, that a complete rewrite is arguably a better option.

chansiky··on Coding for Kids Is Not Just Another Fad
Yeah this is a big problem, courses shouldn't turn into how to use Excel/Word/Photoshop. I think there is room for those types of courses, but our education system just hasn't caught up with how to integrate technical software how-to's with a course that teaches a core topic.
chansiky··on Split Keyboard for Professionals
HAHA! Could be just sewn into your pants. Then you could just walk around the hood wearing some AR goggles while you work. Doesn't solve the tendency for your arms to swing in the opposite direction of you legs though.
chansiky··on Split Keyboard for Professionals
I almost always use a split keyboard when I'm able to set up a stationary environment. But I love to go mobile: coffee shops, beaches, couch, bar counters. I never forget how to use a normal keyboard, nor do I lose any speed. That might be the trick, maybe you need to switch between the two occasionally.
chansiky··on 5k people have pledged to give 10%+ of their income to effective charities
Just make sure you aren't tithing to the Kenneth Copeland Ministries or other "prosperity gospel" preachers. That money is going straight to their private jets.

I could be wrong though, it looks like they might be helping getting rid of COVID-19[1].

chansiky··on I Just Bought a Bank – Yotta YC S20
I would love a solid answer as well, but you have to realize most "money" out there is credit and its effectively how our economy works, so you don't necessarily need to make real money to make real money.
chansiky··on Major Changes to Student Visa Rules Proposed
This seems to be a complex problem to solve. On one hand you don't want to lose access to the smartest minds, on the other you don't want your citizens to suffer from lower quality education because of it. But its also a very economic issue, in the sense that most foreign students pay handsomely to attend prestigious schools, so it makes short term economic sense to trade education for their wealth, meanwhile students at home must take on massive debt to compete economically to be of interest to the institutions.

I feel like this is more of an economic issue than an education issue at heart. I agree that in most cases the incoming talent is not undeniable, so there is little argument for favoring foreign students over domestic students besides an economic one. Somehow foreign students, universities acting as corporations, and global trade has created the mess of the current education system which includes our whole student loan fiasco which makes the younger generation quit before they even start. It seems that colleges have lost sight of being primarily a system to educate the next generation.

Its a similar issue to american businesses taking their jobs overseas, but instead american colleges have, in some sense, taken their education overseas.

chansiky··on On Browser Tabs
Something I learned with tabbed browsing is that its important to clear the working "memory". One of my most used shortcuts is "close other tabs", and "close tabs to the right". Keeping tabs open should be like allocating to the stack and frequently cleared when the task is done. I might open 5 tabs from one link but when I have what I need I'll move the only the ones I need to the left and close the ones to the right. I find clearing tabs very refreshing - when in doubt: nuke it.

The introduction of tabs was fantastic, and I'm very glad you brought it to us. It bundles windows together, I would rather pick up my firefox bucket and look for a web page there than to look through a dumpster of software windows. But it took me a very long time before I figured out how to not let it get out of hand.

If people are afraid of losing tabs, they just aren't trusting their own memory/curiosity enough. When something is important, your mind tends to remember it, and if it wasn't, then its okay to have lost it. If something was that crucial, you can just Google it again, and if you cant find it on Google you still have your browser history.

chansiky··on Brutality of Life Reading List
A lot statements by authors pointing out that life is brutal, and getting very depressing and deep about the topic, but not really explaining why. Life is brutal because its inherent to all living things being in pursuit of self replication whereupon success, such success is replicated. We are always in strife for the same space, energy, and resources with each other(each other being all living things).

Don't be saddened by it, or make it some sort of deep philosophical tragedy. It's as much fact as evolution, or as much fact as 10 - 1 = 9. Accept it and learn to love it for what it is.

chansiky··on Ancient Earth Globe
That's an interesting thought. I was running last week along the beach and was thinking about how early primates/hominids might have decided what plants could be eaten and what plants should be avoided when I saw a stalk of grass with its seeds/flowers. It seemed clear to me just looking at it that the seeds might be extremely edible, and I wouldn't be surprised if many other hungry hominids(and other herbivores) came to same conclusion. What I didn't know was how recent the first grass was nor did I realize how important it might have been for the evolution of land mammals. Here's an interesting fact about grass I just learned (from Wikipedia[1][2]):

> They provide, through direct human consumption, just over one-half (51%) of all dietary energy;

chansiky··on I thought I would have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35
This needs more upvotes. Life really should be about what you spend your time doing, not letting it waste away, not living for achievements, nor comparing ourselves to others, others from completely different worlds, but really making the most of the short time we have, whatever it is we are doing - having fun, doing work, taking a break, living life.
chansiky··on Ask HN: What non-obvious tech/market may take off in the next few years?
The cut and paste example is really cool. Its the idea of seamless physical and digital spaces merging that make it compelling. Obviously its a one way street in the phone example, but with AR glasses then it goes in two directions.
chansiky··on Over three billion people worldwide now play video games, study reports
Half the "gamers" are on candy crush or supercell mindlessly clicking away, getting pavlovian salivations whenever some chest reward notification rings. With these numbers its an epidemic.
chansiky··on Over three billion people worldwide now play video games, study reports
I'm extremely skeptical as well, but the fact that Facebook, Apple, and Google are all dumping tons of money to develop some form of it makes me convinced that its an upcoming market that has the potential to hit big time.

Half the stuff I see people do online goes against any logic I ever thought people would do. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes off for something completely out of left field. Like what is the weirdest, dumbest thing you could think of doing with vr technology, for example - watching 2d movies with your friends, or playing minesweeper, and I bet that's going to be the thing that makes it hit big.

chansiky··on Launch HN: Quell (YC S20) – Immersive gaming and combat workout
