chaganated··on Ask HN: Why is it ok for my uni to have a Marxism society but not a Fascism one?
I don't think you have given an honest answer.

Fascism is just a modern riff on imperialism, which is old as the hills. As such, it is definitely something that should be studied and discussed from every possible angle.

And if it is a mistake (it is), you should have faith that these college kids will, upon closer examination, outgrow the sieg heil phase, and come out with a better understanding of politics & history.

OR, just keep suppressing everything with credentialed word salad, Streisand the hell out of it, and make it so that even the Jewish kids are denying the holocaust.

chaganated··on Ask HN: The economical rules that I think make most sense
So, the people who are flushing the world down the toilet with finance and adtech will finally use their powers for good... if we'd just give them a meager stipend? Ha!

Material isn't the problem. Hasn't been for a long time. Most of us in the west who've been professionally employed for any length of time have enough savings right now to go play gentleman artist/scientist in parts of India, Southeast Asia, or South America, but we don't. I wonder why that is...

chaganated··on Ask HN: The economical rules that I think make most sense
When it comes to the essentials, we are so post-scarcity that it isn't even funny, yet many people still aren't happy. Even with near-infinite food, clothes, & shelter, there's still only one first-place.

Power is all there is. Money is just how we keep score. Shuffle the money around all you want, the power imbalances will still be there.

Giving up the fight for personal development and economic relevance for a steady check is the first step onto the plantation. Plenty of people are already there -- employed & unemployed alike.

2020 made it pretty clear that the media can gaslight the people into anything. We'll be watering the crops with Brawndo any minute now...
chaganated··on The Biology of Disinformation – Memes, media viruses, and cultural inoculation
Pleasing enough conclusion. Of course, localism has little to offer when the facts are on the other side of the world, or in a closed boardroom meeting:

Memetic countermeasures only further weaponize the
  environment. Upgraded algorithmic filtering of
dangerous memes can only result in a technological
arms race between memetic engineers and platform
censors. As collateral damage, it adds black boxes to
the space of public discourse, magnifying distrust while
doing nothing to arm the human beings against memetic
provocation. It is also unlikely that publicly traded
companies dependent on the perception of the size and
centrality of their platforms would voluntarily restrict the
activity of the bots and algorithms generating such a
  high volume of activity.

While a turnkey, technological solution to the problem
of memetic attack is certainly an appealing prospect,
the strengthening of local, human social relationships is
the surest countermeasure to ideological warfare that
depends on alienation for its survival.

And poof!, the last million years of evolution, up in smoke, but in centuries instead of millennia.

Maybe he'll clue us in on those "industrial grade" cabinets, night lights, and pillows?
chaganated··on Ask HN: Why are most comments on this account downvoted?
After reading more of these, I doubt this is a bot. Also very curious about the 100% suppression of civil comments???
chaganated··on Ask HN: Why are most comments on this account downvoted?
Thanks for bringing this acct to my attn. Bot or based schizo, good reading either way.

chaganated··on Myths of Vaccine Manufacturing
Even though I know very little about vaccines, this article has a paid PR smell. These kinds of technocratic problems have short and long answers. He skipped one, and danced around the other.

Has this just run its course, or has the change of administration played a role?

$3.8M for 5k+ employees at Google rates seems low.

An estimation of mankind so low that you almost have to respect it. Almost.
chaganated··on Universal Basic Income Is Superior to a $15 Minimum Wage (2019)
It's even worse than that, since inflation hits the poors the hardest, while the capital and professional classes have skills/assets that weather inflation quite nicely. Hard to imagine a more efficient way of neutering the poors politically and economically.

Struggling to put the peasants on the reservation? Make things hard enough, and they'll vote for it themselves!

UBI? Capital idea!

These actions have been so fast and furious and brazen that you have to wonder: They obviously see people as cattle, but are they right? Or, do they have an ace up their sleeve that makes the answer irrelevant?

chaganated··on What If Wall Street Bets Was a BBS?
I think this overlooks just how locked-down things were back then.

It may have all been federally regulated, but that doesn't do much in a media monoculture -- which makes it so much easier for well-connected elites to frame their own nuisances as public enemies. There was no viable venue for actual dissent.

chaganated··on Parents' income, not smarts, key to entrepreneurship
There was a guy who owned a recording studio. His observation was that artists who had menial jobs eventually made it. The ones with professional jobs all struck out. Brain energies may be in shorter supply than hours.
chaganated··on Parents' income, not smarts, key to entrepreneurship
1) This is ideological bullshit rather than a good faith argument. 2) Adjusted for inflation, I'm sure this description fits more than one president, so you'll need to be more specific. 3) Whichever example it may be, I'm sure that president also had a wealth of credentials, connections, shibboleths, etc. of greater value than a mere one-million fiats.
chaganated··on Parents' income, not smarts, key to entrepreneurship
Correlates? Sure. Causes? I strongly doubt it. Drop a million bucks on Joe Blow and see how things turn out.

I see the milieu of having semi-affluent parents--being steeped in the ins-and-outs of business, law, assets, broader social ties, and higher social standing--as a far more powerful edge than a wad of cash.

chaganated··on WallStreetBets vs WallStreet: It's not about the money anymore
It's all connected. Any little hiccup can trigger a chain reaction of margin calls, or worse. Remember the CDO debacle from 2008.

When Goldman, JP Morgan, et al finally take the hit, we all know that DC will rush to their aid. It has happened before, and it will happen again.

Nobody is buying these worn-out wall street apologetics.

chaganated··on WallStreetBets vs WallStreet: It's not about the money anymore
Unconvincing. We're all playing in the same pool. It only takes one upset stomach to set off a chain reaction.
chaganated··on WallStreetBets vs WallStreet: It's not about the money anymore
Premature gloating. The government can always come in at the last minute with bailouts for wall street and overblown charges against the redditors.

I see that you've been HODLing some GME. Sorry bro, have to charge you with economic terrorism. Nothing personal.

chaganated··on Ask HN: How long did it take you to configure your devbox at your current job?
Tmux & Vim with a bunch of plugins.

And most of the languages I use are in the OS's package manager. Setup is "apt-get/brew install ..." followed by "hg clone ..." for my plugins and settings.

So, direct answer would be "a few minutes."

Instead of a single performance at Christmas dinner, now your crazy uncle and mine can reach the whole town 24x7x365. For some reason or another, our betters see this as an imminent threat to "democracy" -- one which cannot go unanswered.

That the same people call their payoffs to a stable of geriatric looters, in exchange for order-of-magnitude ROIs, "democracy" says all that needs to be said about the situation.

chaganated··on Dominion Voting Systems Sues Rudy Giuliani
So, the people who can't get hole-punching and ballot layout right are going to "fix" things with two programming languages, three databases, and a dozen or so support libraries?

Also, Florida 2000 is a strange example, considering the present drama. We've only gone from a simple controversy to a more complex one.

Per Bruce Schneier:

> If you think technology can solve your security problems, then you don't understand the problems, and you don't understand the technology.

chaganated··on Dominion Voting Systems Sues Rudy Giuliani
Why must everything involve the computer? It was on paper when I was a kid, didn't require an army of six-figure salaries, and things seemed to go far more smoothly.
