cguess··on Ireland shuts last coal plant, becomes 15th coal-free country in Europe (2025)
> Coal is cheap

Only if you ignore all externalities including:

- environmental damage from mining (yes this exists for renewables too)

- global warming

- pollution on city infrastructure

- pollution on health

- the sunk costs causing higher transition costs when inevitably you transfer to renewables anyways.

cguess··on MacBook Air with M5
> If "just hotspot your phone" was hunky dory why does Apple sell iPads with cellular modems?

Because iPads are fundamentally different than laptops. Workers use tablets in the field all the time, often for shorter, quick, one-off checks and such. If you're in a fleet truck or on a job site, having a tablet on the passenger seat to check on work orders is easy. Pulling out a laptop is a much bigger pull, and more awkward.

Like 5. Literally 5, total.
cguess··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
Hospitals are also planning documents, budgets, schedules, grants, reports, all with different access levels, privacy requirements, and legal regulations.

They're far more than just patient care in the moment.

There's not even a reasonable FOSS calendar for Linux that integrates with email. Thunderbird has it, but it doesn't work with Google's Advanced Protection for instance.
cguess··on Binance fired employees who found $1.7B in crypto was sent to Iran
I did once. Even after setting up a wallet and buying BTC (this was back in the mid-2010s), it still took 15 minutes to pay for two glasses of wine at a cafe. I could have just tossed down €5 and been done with it in 20 seconds.
cguess··on Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Technical Info
Amen. If you've ever had to deal with repairing French frames from before the 1980s you know that finding a memory leak in a race condition is easy in comparison.
cguess··on Wisconsin communities signed secrecy deals for billion-dollar data centers
How would electrical resistance drop in space? If you're thinking "because it's cold" that's actually the biggest issue. The vacuum means you can't dispose of heat easily, so you need giant radiators, which are expensive, heavy, etc.
cguess··on Putting Gemini to Work in Chrome
I mean, if you don't care at all about cuisine, style, location etc. I guess? Searching is half the fun of something like that.

Anyways I will (continue to) not touch Chrome with a 1000ft pole after this. AI is awful in almost every aspect I've ever tasked it to.

cguess··on High-speed train collision in Spain kills at least 39
We do have good rails, but they're regional. the NE Corridor is pretty solid overall and METRA and Amtrak in the Chicago area works quite well.
cguess··on 39th Chaos Communication Congress Videos
There wasn't even enough assembly space this year, it was bursting at the seams. Sadly I think CCH is just too small for this conference. There's a much bigger conference space space down the street, but the rumor is that going back to Leipzig (where it was held during the renovation of CCH) is back in discussion. That place was too big though.
cguess··on 62 years in the making: NYC's newest water tunnel nears the finish line
The big reason for tunnel 3 isn't new population growth, it's so that the other tunnels can be shut down for maintenance and inspection. NYC's population is more or less stable over the last 90 years.
cguess··on Pop_OS 24.04 LTS with COSMIC desktop environment
yes
cguess··on Kenyan court declares law banning seed sharing unconstitutional
Yep, I went to UW Madison and he's affiliated with it, so my professor had him do a guest lecture.
cguess··on In New York City, congestion pricing leads to marked drop in pollution
The Verazano is already more expensive than congestion pricing. It's cheaper to drive to Manhattan from Jersey than Brooklyn via Staten Island. Never heard any Jersey driver complain though.
cguess··on In New York City, congestion pricing leads to marked drop in pollution
There's a large (long time) movement to do this to lower Manhattan, the most public transit connected area in the US (probably North America, definitely up there in the world). It's getting pick up again.
cguess··on Kenyan court declares law banning seed sharing unconstitutional
I had a lecture from the main researcher of that paper when I was in undergrad, fantastic lecturer and very interesting topic. The whole class actually applauded him after he finished (that isn't something that happens in US universities usually).
cguess··on Git 3.0 will use main as the default branch
This is just a default change. If you already have your branch named 'master' then that doesn't change anything.
cguess··on Paris had a moving sidewalk in 1900, and a Thomas Edison film captured it (2020)
I live in a place where transit is about every 10-15 minutes and I never dream of a car. I mostly thank god every day I don't have to rely on one.
cguess··on Paris had a moving sidewalk in 1900, and a Thomas Edison film captured it (2020)
Not in the US, but in Europe it's more common. Shopping malls in Eastern Europe they're not uncommon.
cguess··on Paris had a moving sidewalk in 1900, and a Thomas Edison film captured it (2020)
> available on demand

This doesn't work in cities. The vast majority of peoples movement are not immediately necessary. They can wait 10-15 minutes (or plan ahead) for efficiency. This also cuts down on costs for everyone.

cguess··on Thieves steal crown jewels in 4 minutes from Louvre Museum
There was a digital reconstruction using the pigments analysis https://blog.world-mysteries.com/science/digital-restoration...

My memories of the few times I've been to the Louvre are exactly the same as yours.

Musee d'Orsay down the river is a much better museum in my opinion and the one I never skip when I'm in Paris, the Louvre I'll only go to if someone I'm with has never been and really wants to.

cguess··on Thieves steal crown jewels in 4 minutes from Louvre Museum
The Mona Lisa isn't even the most interesting piece in the room it's shown in.
cguess··on Waymo has received our pilot permit allowing for commercial operations at SFO
It's a three minute walk out the door of Terminal B at LGA, directly into the parking structure.
cguess··on Burner Phone 101
The guide recommends PGPP to rotate IMEI numbers, however, the service shut down more than a year ago. https://invisv.com/articles/service_shutdown.html
cguess··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
Next time go below 14th street. The grid is great but very misleading. NYC has had 400+ years of development, and it's deeply not homogenous in its design.
cguess··on Japan: Apple Must Lift Browser Engine Ban by December
> Chromium is so mainstream that developers think developing for other browsers is irrelevant, even putting notices of deprecation for Safari and Firefox.

Hugging Face's spaces does this, throwing banners saying it only supports Chrome. Makes me throw up a little bit every time I have to switch over.

cguess··on Japan: Apple Must Lift Browser Engine Ban by December
It does indeed. Safari on iOS is the one thing keeping the web from just being "All Chrome Everywhere".
cguess··on Vibe code is legacy code
Sure, and Da Vinci didn't have an architectural degree when he was designing bridges, but now you need a proper license to do so. Society learns to do better
cguess··on FDA has approved Yeztugo, a drug that provides protection against HIV infection
The difference is it's twice a year injection, not daily or monthly pills. For many at-risk populations (unhoused, people living in the rural developing world) taking a pill once a day, or even monthly, much less making you can refill your prescription is insanely difficult.
