cgore··on Social Media and the ‘Spiral of Silence’
In general, freedom of speech is one of the places where conservatives tend to do a lot better than liberals. You are making a really good example of that.

Bach was deeply religious, and not just because of some lap-dog sense of "that's who's paying the bills." He signed most of his works as "SDG", short for "Soli Deo Gloria", which roughly translates as "to God alone belongs all glory. His meaning being that any ability Bach thought he had was solely just God showing off: Bach made beautiful music, but God made Bach, and he knew it.

I'm in a similar situation. My new job is an all-mac shop, which is funny because we are mostly writing software for Linux boxes out in the Internet. I didn't mind though, because they bought me about $5,200 worth of mac equipment to keep. I've been using BSD and then later Linux since 1999, and that was about the last time I used a mac, OS 7. I was expecting to somewhat dislike it, but they do Clojure and I wanted to go that way. I really have enjoyed the change though, and even bought an iPhone.
cgore··on Burying the URL
And that has got to be the most irritating thing about Google these days, they mangle the URLs in their search results to the point where I can't get a clean URL sometimes, at least not without some real work.

cgore··on Posical, the Positivist Calendar for Python
The seven-day week, yes, the rest of it is Roman in origin: the solar nature, the months, their names, their order, etc.

One of the weird ones is our (English) weekday names: Sunday, Monday, etc. Those are apparently from German, but after their contact with the Romans, and after the Romans adopted the 7-day week. Which means it is after the Christianization of Rome, but before the Christianization of the Germanic tribes. They took the Roman week and put their gods' names in place instead.

cgore··on Posical, the Positivist Calendar for Python
Our current calendar has absolutely nothing to do with Judaism, it is the calendar of Rome with some very minor tweaks.

That's a better way to see it. It's hard to see good management and its effects, but good management really does make a major difference. But it is so hard to see, that people sometimes don't even realize they need it. But to see the ability management has to change the outcome, look at bad management: they can totally destroy a company, no matter how good the engineers are. That people can see.
cgore··on Bitcoin deserves the right symbol
I suspect a lot of the original bitcoin folks, typically being some variant of libertarian or anarchist, couldn't care less what some random unelected multinational organization says.

To the best of my knowledge you can make GPL clojure code, and include clojure.jar too.

Has anybody used these? A 1,000-year DVD/Blu-Ray sounds good. I would use it if it is actually reliable. (Actually just want decades, but centuries is better.)
cgore··on The Face Behind Bitcoin?
Right. The whole SpaceX/Armadillo Aerospace/etc. situation that is developing now is almost definitionally Libertarian.
cgore··on The Face Behind Bitcoin?
The "science-hating religious person" is just a straw man for Dawkins and the like. Most religious people have no problem with science, and see no contradiction between the two. Many of them even are engineers, scientists, and doctors, often some of the most renowned of their fields.

The groups who actually do see a contradiction typically aren't hypocritical at all about it, to the point of not getting blood transfusions even if it means their death, to use the example of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

cgore··on The Face Behind Bitcoin?
I think a lot of people seem to be confusing Libertarianism with Anarchism. Libertarians typically do see roles for SOME government, and those roles are typically the military, judges, roads, police, and the like.

Not other things though, so no Social Security, no Obamacare, no National Endowment for the Arts, and no space program (other than for space weapons, so get rid of NASA and establish some sort of "US Star Force.")

So with that world view, working at a defense contractor isn't a conflict at all, instead, it is the one "true and legitimate" reason for government in their eyes.

cgore··on Ask HN: Is $100k for 50% just a terrible idea?
$90k is an "average" developer in the US (not the Valley, the US: you can easily make that here in St Louis where I am.)

A multiplier of 1.5 - 2.0 is common when you bill out, to account for offices, chairs, electricity, health insurance, etc. And it isn't just software, actually it is often higher in other fields: an auto mechanic might make $25/hour and be billed out at $75/hour.

So $100k will get you ONE run-of-the-mill Java programmer for 6-9 months tops.

This accelerator is just looking for idiots.

cgore··on Why was "goto fail;" added without any other change to that part of the code?
I appreciate the coding standard at a previous employer (http://www.astronautics.com/) a little bit more now, that INSISTED that braces always happen, even for one line conditionals like these. It was kind of irritating at the time though.

I did a similar thing too. I wrote a lot of bad adventure fiction in Runic around that same age, around 10-12. I still have most of it.
