great post
cgherb911··on Co-founder or employee?
5-10% plus pay!? And you're already profitable? Sounds like a kick ass deal to me. Give him a nice title and the deal sounds amazing and nearly too good. Especially at 10% equity. Just make sure to have vesting on his shares over 2 to 3 years.
cgherb911··on Startup Scam: Paying to Pitch Puts Power Players on the Warpath
It seems that paying to pitch is a worthless venture. You have to build a real relationship with an investor before they are willing to open their wallet.
cgherb911··on Ask HN: How do you pick colors
The colors you choose shouldn't matter on what others choose. The colors you choose should convey your brand. Doing something different with your color scheme may even be a benefit in regards to being the purple cow.
cgherb911··on Ask HN: How do you pick colors
oh and a few more famous brands to back my argument for colors focus on your brand (story)... http://www.google.com http://www.purwater.com/#/healthy%20water,%20healthy%20you http://www.toyota.com/prius-hybrid/ http://www.teslamotors.com/

As you see the color schemes are only there to accentuate the brand. Do customers buy teslas in order to be green or because their a luxury sports car? Their color scheme is chosen on the basis of their brand and who their customers are.

cgherb911··on Ask HN: How do you pick colors
I see alot of posts from the design perspective but what is your brand trying to convey? Who are your customers? The sure fire way is to generate lets say 20 schemes, get friends, family, and biz partners to vote on their top 5. Get a collection of top 3-10 color schemes and show them to possible customers. Take their input and there you have a color scheme that has a high likelyhood of working for your target market. Attractiveness does not equal branding good, ex this famous brand: http://www.arrogantbastard.com/

useful bit of math
cgherb911··on Ask HN: How much equity for first employee?
Do they have an evaluation? When negotiating equity before an evaluation is set, there is always funny money going on. What do you really bring to the table? What will be your position in the long run? Will you be more of a CTO position or a programer? If you're the only one actually creating the website, creating the technology then without you, it's just a good idea. Whatever percent you choose to negotiate for, be prepared to have a well documented, planned argument.
cgherb911··on For First Time, AIDS Vaccine Shows Some Success in Trials
I have to agree that the numbers don't seem to differ significantly enough to draw any conclusive evidence. I agree with your math in saying that if you had the vaccine, your chance of infection is .6375% and without the chance of infection is .925%. From this perspective I don't see any hard numbers to back the claim. I'll wait for a more better controlled experiment before I believe this one.

cgherb911··on Tell HN: My Start-Up Launched our iPhone App Today - Gaia GPS
Hi Andrew,

I like it. My 2 cents:

1) Once i read your statement below I understand the app. I think you should make it plainly obvious that the app is for hiking (if that is your target market)

2) (This is based off the assumption that the target is hikers) The people who will use this are outdoors people. The app gui should be geared towards the market. I feel the app & web layout is geared for the high tech crew. Look at some legendary brands' color schemes (http://www.coleman.com/). Maybe partner up with a casing designer to provide rugged iphone cases (they'll be taking their iphone outdoors).

3) Why are you better than GPS motionx?

Cool app and I hope you can give me your feedback when our (phone halo) app releases.

cgherb911··on Ask HN - Is there a business model in IM bots
I see only see b2b play here. Making bots to enhance customer support live chat (like on digi-key)
cgherb911··on Ask HN: Whats more important? Size of the target market or Passion for an idea.
A, but its not about the money. If you don't have a value proposition you don't have a business. Is there a pain point that you solve? How painful is it? Where there is a real need will yield success. And I mean success in the interpretation that correlates to your business's or NPO's goal.

cgherb911··on Twitter sued over patens
It seems that every time a great business comes along, the wolves attack. It's depressing that this business feels it necessary to sue twitter, a business in no direct competition with this emergency alert provider. People need to understand that technology!=success, implementation=success.
cgherb911··on The end of Twitter as we know it
This is nothing new. Companies have paid celebrities to endorse their products for a long time. This is just taking it to a new level, where companies can pay anyone to endorse their product. I see the effectiveness of this strategy to be limiting because the endorsement is not authentic. Obama doesn't recommend blackberry to his friends because he's paid. College kids didn't create facebook accounts for all their friends because Mark cut them a check. It's authentically loving a business that gets people to talk about it. Twitter is a new means of conversation. But you still can't just pay someone to talk about your product. They have to love it first.
cgherb911··on ____ will ____ you
I like it. A lot of buzz is going on with being able to share answers to common questions. (twitter: what are you doing? facebook: who are you? Loopt: Where are you?) This also goes along with stuff like the epic fail blog, or fml blog.

Maybe this could be used to stream epic fail blog as a screen saver?

Anyways, cool post

cgherb911··on Warren Buffet's Kid Show [video]
thanks for the info!
cgherb911··on [dead]
I actually take back my comment about not being appropriate because it made me think about the entrepreneurial possibilities of creating a brand based on humane meat. So I was incorrect in the video not being appropriate because it was able to kindle the entrepreneurial mindset!
cgherb911··on [dead]
Does this video belong on this forum? It's remarkably one sided but when watching, I wonder about the entrepreneurial opportunities available to farmers who can produce large quantities of meat humanely.
cgherb911··on Ask HN: Develop on Android or iPhone?
I-phone has a much bigger market share at ~11% of the smart phone market. You should also look into developing for the Blackberry. (~34% of smart phone market!!)
