Fuck you HN. I considered giving you a second chance, yet you remain a toxic asshat breeding ground which you relish and foster. Fuck you.

cfv··on Org-Mode Is One of the Most Reasonable Markup Languages to Use for Text (2018)
Commonmark (https://commonmark.org) exists, has a fairly well defined standard, and the reference implementations are not hard to reason about. They are part of several thousands of larger codebases right now, too.

Org-mode on the other hand is basically an emacs thing that has never been seen in the wild outside maybe as a pandoc input? Which is coincidentally another tool I almost never actually use by itself. And I have literally no idea how ota reference implementation works or on which languages could I embed it and how.

I'm pretty sure my experience isn't that rare too.

cfv··on Norway Is Walking Away from Billions of Barrels of Oil
Good. Long term habitability of this world takes precedence over short term profit.
cfv··on You Are Not Google (2017)
Oh, I had to spend an hour "fixing" my incorrectly autofilled fields for Chrome to please stop playing games with my users data.

I'm acutely aware I'm not Google.

Nope, sorry. US politics have made me develop a reflex disdain for anything new named like that.
cfv··on A JavaScript-Free Front End
> The same can be said about any JS library that interacts with page controls.

Difference being JS, if written by an averagely competent individual, can be changed once and this change will apply to any instances where it's called, and this cute pattern will need to be manually updated in any number of places where it's applied, one by one.

> Yes, you can. 0 rework != 0 work.

Rework meaning you have to go back over the "done" thing and then do more to cover the technical debt. On each and every instance of the thing.

> if something in your JS gets broken

As opposed to replacing the cute styling trickery for browsers that don't really support it, which is somehow better?

cfv··on A JavaScript-Free Front End
Just a stupid question. Why would you need a bundler for plain HTML?

I agree on everything else, but I kinda tripped on that and I'm not sure what you're actually looking for.

cfv··on A JavaScript-Free Front End
So I decided to try and figure out this specific trick about toggling content and how well this would actually work in, say, a tab panel. I mean, it is a cute trick right? I made this: https://jsfiddle.net/sr8z1mob/6/

Yes, it is a cute trick. Yes, it CAN be made more accessible, and kinda sorta avoids the most obvious problems with like tabindexes and so on, although it did take a lot of work on my end for such an insignificant demonstrator, and I can't still set the active tab by hand in any way in here.

Which is a rather important cue about it's capabilities.

There's other things I cannot do:

- Use this as an actual component! I would have to set up an editor expansion to type all this stuff each time I wanted a tablist, and I cannot globally modify how all of them work. Making this into some kind of custom tag would be GREAT, but it could also probably mean going back to .htc files which is not so great.

- Track user interaction! It's important to us to know what the user is doing with our product so we can make it better. - Auto-select the first tab's content in all tablists without contorting my brain into a cramp - Load the tab contents lazily. Maybe you don't need the King James Bible (replace with any other long blob you like) loaded in there by default, just when you actually want to go look at the thing. - Skin the scrollbar easily (OSX for instance is a major PITA I'd like to have auto-solved for me) - Tell the server when the tab was scrolled to the bottom - Did I mention I cannot mark the current tab as open in any real meaningful way?

This is a fun experiment. But really, it all boils down to requirements and development times. Do you have the time and energy to spare to twist the browser into doing this kind of things? That's awesome!

I, more often than not, don't. That's sort of the reason why we use a development framework that puts us into a mindset we can work better with to cover more ellaborate scenarios (like being able to mark the currently open tab as exactly that without having to think about doing it).

cfv··on You probably don't need a single-page app
You probably don't need a single-page app, right up to the point where it's a business requirement and you have to translate a GB worth of convoluted JSPs into one because the client likes smoothness in their flows, continuous saving, and all those nicely choreographed state transitions you just cannot get without having a framework hijack the History and File APIs from the browser's paws.

Yes, a nice state machine-like flow with each thing happening only once at a given time is great, right until you get asked to make it so that clicking on a thing shouldn't reset all user input, and progress of a task should be communicated live, maybe while we also we want this app to just not show a blank screen like, ever, just comes and happens to you and that's what you kind of have to do now.

cfv··on My Chromecast Ultra would not start until I began answering 8.8.8.8
My oven should not refuse to work if my gas pipes are not from the same maker. The ability to set up my own products to whatever config I like is not an extraordinary request. Especially when it's the default operating mode with an off brand product. Google should collectively be ashamed.

You smartasses banned the entire country of Uruguay, where I reside, from reading this. http://imgur.com/sdd6Mlv If anything, this is a huge red flag indicating that I shouldn't care about anything Deliveroo does.

Sounds like an awfully easy thing to exploit into nothingness.

cfv··on 'Karma': A hack used by the UAE to break into iPhones of foes
It's not a... problem, I'm just having a tough time understanding how that works. And would love any pointers towards more or less when they started getting good at it.
cfv··on 'Karma': A hack used by the UAE to break into iPhones of foes
Not even talking about intelligence here. Sorry. That's an endless time waster I'm not touching.

As mentioned, for whatever reason, I'm having a hard time picturing how people who deem apostasy punishable by death can also manage, research, and exploit modern equipment, and am looking for some indication as to when exactly did they start getting good at it.

cfv··on 'Karma': A hack used by the UAE to break into iPhones of foes
I can't help but giggle at the thought of Emirati hackers. For whatever reason my mind can't wrap around the fact that an extremely religious people can also be at the high end of tech (at the very least high enough to figure out 0days and such).

Does anyone have any info on since when this has actually been like this? I'd like to look up how their CS education works and that kind of stuff.

cfv··on RE:DOM – Tiny turboboosted JavaScript library for creating user interfaces
Loving it, built something similar a long time ago. Can you use it the other way around tho? Like, take an HTML string and return its RE:DOM representation.
cfv··on Input: Fonts for Code
Hi! Dooes this support ligatures? I've come to depend heavily on them for some reason.
cfv··on Show HN: Jetpack – Webpack made more convenient
How does this fare against parcel-bundler (https://parceljs.org/)? It does pretty much the same thing in a slightly different manner, and I'd like to know before I actually consider giving it a try.

Thanks!

cfv··on Combining Golang and PHP can solve real-world development challenges
Ohhh is that so? Show me how you do the following in Javascript.

    try{
      $exceptionType = rand(1,10) > 5?
        BadMethodCallException::class
        : LogicException::class;
      throw new $exceptionType("smartass");
    }
    catch(BadMethodCallException $typed_1){
      file_put_contents('php://stderr', "Bad method, ".$typed_1->getMessage());
    }
    catch(LogicException $typed_2){
      file_put_contents('php://stderr', "Bad logic, ".$typed_2->getMessage());
    }
or this:

    function lieToMe(PHPMailer\PHPMailer\PHPMailer $mailer){

    }
or this:

    $mailStrategy = new MailStrategy();
    $mailStrategy("email@example.com","Subject","Body");
Or any of the other actually cool things you get with PHP if you can cope with the language.

It's sad to see people who probably can't program a microwave diss an entire language they haven't ever actually used.

cfv··on Show HN: Visalist – Find visa requirements for countries around the world
While this is super cool, as an Argentinian I show up as visa-free for a bunch of Schengen countries, which while strictly not false it's not super useful: We get 3 out of every 6 months stay, and the list would prob be a lot more useful to people who don't know this if these things were somehow displayed; it's after all not a minor caveat when picking travel destinations

cfv··on In defense of functional CSS
But wait, what exactly is so hard about doing something like

    // _profile.scss
    .profile-card {
      @extend .m-5;
      // several more lines of extending
      @extend border-gray-light;
    }
and just get the best of both worlds? That variant also has the advantage of letting us JS folk use element classes for useful stuff, and makes changing all instances of "profile-card" simultaneously a lot simpler.
cfv··on Intercooler.js – Simple AJAX Using HTML Attributes
The thing is literally called

  The Progressive
  JavaScript Framework
I mean, regardless of anecdotal specific usage, vue is a framework. And a nice one too! Just entirely too much for something that can be fulfilled by a simple pjax tool
cfv··on Intercooler.js – Simple AJAX Using HTML Attributes
It may be worth mentioning that Vue is an entire framework with a crapload of features and caveats and whatnot and thus not exactly an equivalent of an especially flexible PJAX library which is the best definition I can come up with when defining Intercooler

There is such a thing as 5d memory storage, which I understand basically uses etched glass and is thus super mega stable, although I'm not too sure about the costs involved in heavy use for things like day to day archiving https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/5D_optical_data_storage
cfv··on Non-Recursive Make Considered Harmful: Build Systems at Scale (2016) [pdf]
Style and format are important tho, would you like your docs written in haiku, or as a single three hour light opera video?

Embracing an archaic grandstanding pose and an academic look when much more easily grokkable formats are available just doesn't help get your message across that well. And when there's one of this roughly monthly I'd personally love to at least see less of them.

cfv··on Non-Recursive Make Considered Harmful: Build Systems at Scale (2016) [pdf]
I'd like to issue a blanket ban on the "considered harmful" thing, as well as sharing print-optimized PDFs on the web for people on computers to read.

Both things are archaisms that can be easily avoided, and in the particular case of this article, the 2nd part of the title works just as well as the title.

cfv··on Show HN: A Native Art Gallery for the Mac
You know what I actually miss when I use OSX? An actual mspaint clone.

Not an ad-ridden or pay version, just a built in paint app I can doodle on that's in there by default.
