cft··on Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested at French airport
Another interesting thing is why my post was so heavily downvoted. Did I touch a taboo subject?
cft··on Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested at French airport
I tried to market something very small on Telegram and was surprised how fast my account got restricted.

cft··on Whistleblower Josh Dean of Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems has died
The chance to die from all causes at the age of 45 is 0.41% https://www.ssa.gov/oact/STATS/table4c6.html

Combined with the suicide two months ago (with his prior warning "please don't believe that I committed suicide") this deserves an investigation, not a simple dismissal.

"Let's " is that an imperative now?
cft··on Whistleblower Josh Dean of Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems has died
Because it's the second [1] Boeing whistleblower that died within 2 months. The chance to die from all causes at the age of 45 is 0.41% [2]. The first whistleblower died at 62. The chance to die from all causes is 1.6% at this age.

cft··on Google Reader shutdown tidbits (2013)
Google search thrived from the third party websites. RSS incentivized and enabled those third-party websites. By killing the reader and RSS, they helped consolidate the web into unsearchable walled gardens like Facebook. If those decision makers still work in Google, that's a reason for continuing Google's downfall.

The decision was probably based on two reasons:

1. They wanted users to discover content using their algorithm as opposed to manual subscriptions to RSS thus depriving users of content Discovery agency.

2. They wanted to promote Google

They work incredibly well for drawing nigh the end of dollar as the reserve currency, and nothing else. More and more countries are divesting of it, because it's used as a political weapon.
cft··on Working at Google has been utterly depressing for over a year
As a former heavy user of Google search, I hardly did any Google searches in the last 6 months. Copilot for the current / day to day stuff, and GPT4 + Claude combo for technical stuff.
cft··on OpenAI: Start using ChatGPT instantly
Is this for no-account users, or for everyone, including paid users?

In the past, I thought that search engines censored content because of the advertiser's demands, but now that AI search switched to the paid model I think the censorship is purely ideological because these companies are based in San Francisco.

cft··on XZ Backdoor: Times, damned times, and scams
But well-known VPNs mostly keep IP logs - I know from experience; in my company the FBI found a DDoSer this way.
cft··on XZ Backdoor: Times, damned times, and scams
Most (but not all ) VPN providers keep logs and payment info that are subpoenable. You could use something like Mulvad with Lightning Network payments, but I am not sure that even that is fully anonymous.

The Witopia VPN that he used for IRC [1] is US based: https://www.personalvpn.com/contact-us/ and they don't mention neither LN payments nor not keeping logs.

cft··on Boeing CEO Calhoun to step down at end of 2024
Only meaningful competition does. For example, competition with Comac is not meaningful due to politics, but competition withing the country with Douglas and Lockheed was.

cft··on The demise of coding is greatly exaggerated
My previous response was refuting your statement: "The CEO of Nvidia is a smart guy, he's pushing the hype train because his business is riding the wave"
cft··on The demise of coding is greatly exaggerated
I think you're viewing it from the programming bubble. He's not that vested in AI success for programming. Even if AI code generation completely failed, NVIDIA's business is still more than OK because LLMs have a lot of other uses, killing Google search for example. That's not a small niche.
cft··on The demise of coding is greatly exaggerated
Computer chess has been failing for 30 years, until it didn't. Try winning a Go or a chess game against the computer now. There easily might be another architectural find lateral to LLMs that will 10x the code generation quality.
cft··on The demise of coding is greatly exaggerated
For me, the words of NVIDIA CEO weigh more than MuratBuffalo blog, due to their respective track records. While AI may not replace hard-core cryptography or kernel coding, it will definitely replace a lot of Upwork that goes into say restaurant website creation.

There will be AI IDEs that will allow previewing the results of the prompts, before converting them into code

It also excludes a lot of people from entrepreneurial activity: if you are over 30 or have kids you better have health insurance, and thus work for a big corp instead of bootstrapping a small business. My SOs individual health ins policy went from $250/mo in 2014 to $1000/mo in 2023.
