cft··on I've been using Claude Code for a couple of days
in 2027 a lot programming will simply be a question of who has the largest LLM budget.

I wonder what it means for the open source...

Claude Code is another level, because it's agentic. It iterates. Although it keeps you further from the codebase than Cursor and thus you may lose the grasp of what it generates- that's why I still use Cursor, before the manual review.
cft··on Microsoft is plotting a future without OpenAI
OpenAI will in the end be aquired for less than its current valuation. Initially, I've been paying for Claude (coding), Cursor (coding), OpenAI (general, coding), and then started paying for Claude Code API credits.

Now I canceled OpenAI and Claude general subscriptions, because for general tasks, Grok and DeepSeek more than suffice. General purpose AI will unlikely be subscription-based, unlike the specialized (professional) one. I'm now only paying for Claude Code API credits and still paying for Cursor.

No, not OK. In this case, the recourse in the US is simple- contact the company, and when refused a refund, cancel the charge in your credit card wit a couple of simple clicks in the app.

I cannot fit the full answer in a reply here, but the deep state in this sense is the same as the Managerial State https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Managerial_state , presented in such books as After Liberalism https://archive.org/details/afterliberalism00paul or Nomenklatura https://archive.org/details/nomenklaturasovi0000vosl_l7v8

cft··on Tariffs result in 10% laptop price hike in U.S. says Acer CEO
The last reliable laptops I had were IBM T40 (my first one) and IBM/Lenovo W500. I ran a bootstrapped software company and they didn't fail me. After that I briefly had a Samsung ultrabook (that was semi-reliable) and then a Dell XPS 13 that one day had a screen crack when I opened it. Then I switched to MacBooks when M1 came out: first keys got stuck in my M1, then the screen bezel spontaneously cracked on an M2 just when the warranty ended and I was in Europe. Apparently now Apple laptops are luxury items, you have to wipe the keyboard from dust before closing the lid.

I do not care about cost, I just need something that won't suddenly break when I am abroad and need to do something important. I miss those American IBM ThinkPads.

cft··on Ask HN: Do you still use Google?
only for most trivial searches and only because I have a pixel phone that has a search bar on the home screen that I cannot remove.

The fact that I have a Pixel makes me uncomfortable on its own right, because I'm afraid to get a patronizing email from Command and Control at any moment: it has come to our attention that you are in Europe now therefore we are changing your account (my wife is European) or that I "violated" some out of wack machine learning heuristics and I will be left without a functional phone.

cft··on What situations in classical physics are non-deterministic? (2018)
>I don't know what point you're trying to make

In the sense that one cannot create an ideal dome and make an experiment, whether a point particle placed exactly at the top later randomly starts to fall.

One has to study if this class of solutions survives deformations of the ideal dome, to make such an experiment (neglecting quantum effects).

cft··on What situations in classical physics are non-deterministic? (2018)
>What do you mean it doesn't exist in nature?

So, for example, for large enough r, the gravitational force \sqrt(r) will exceed the free fall accelleration g?

More importantly, does this additional branch of solutions that satisfies the initial conditions, survive under the small deformations of this dome shape? The perfect Dome shape certainly does not exist.

cft··on The Unicorn Boom Is Over, and Startups Are Getting Desperate
Do you think that LLMs are not a benefit? Smartphones? Electric cars?
cft··on What situations in classical physics are non-deterministic? (2018)
I would only call this a thought experiment. We are yet to encounter a physical Norton's Dome: it probably doesn't exist in nature.
cft··on What situations in classical physics are non-deterministic?
Stochastic does not mean undeteministc. It means that tiny perturbations to initial conditions lead to huge differences in time evolution.

See this gif for example https://gereshes.com/2019/02/18/chaos-and-the-double-pendulu...

cft··on LibreOffice still kicking at 40, now with browser tricks and real-time collab
That's my exact rationale for installing LibreOffice on a new Macbook. The performance on Apple silicon is very decent.

Instead of the increasingly uphill battle with Acrobat torrents and cracks, I am a happy LibreOffice user. Congrats Adobe, you won.

BTW, I have a written many (widely cited) papers supported by NSF grants during my PhD and postdoc. So it's not a political view, my practical opinion is that NSF needs to be cleaned up. A lot of big grant money goes to outright hopelessly useless stuff.

you need to expend resources (e.g. "proof of work") to post, to drive away low effort spam. https://stacker.news/ is an interesting experiment in that regard.

I agree with the first part, but I disagree with the conjecture. There are also people who enjoy writing comments, and inasmuch they have to read a bit of context (at least the comment they are replying to). Those will always exits.
