cferr··on How does Chrome decide what to highlight when you double-click Japanese text?
Yes, but it hasn't been written yet.
cferr··on Valve's Proton Has Brought 6000 Windows Games to Linux So Far
Ditto here. My wife's PC, for example, is now running OpenSUSE full time. She used to dual boot with Windows 10, primarily for games, but she would spend most of her computing time using Windows just because of the game inconvenience. Now pretty much everything she plays 'just works' with Proton, and she has no need for Windows.
cferr··on Valve's Proton Has Brought 6000 Windows Games to Linux So Far
It may, but then you would need to purchase two Windows licenses if you want to keep the host OS Windows.
cferr··on Google allows G Suite administrators to monitor and audit user emails
What does damage the container mean in this context?
cferr··on Google allows G Suite administrators to monitor and audit user emails
Though the delivery wasn't as polite as it could have been, I believe it was valid criticism.
cferr··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
I'm learning how effective I can be without physical access to my equipment. Due to the nature of our environment, I'm estimating about 40%.
cferr··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
Water from the standing hot water heater typically doesn't taste as good.
cferr··on Ask HN: Who has been laid off?
Even a deck of playing cards can kill plenty of time. Pencils and paper are cheap as well.
cferr··on Ending Support for macOS and Linux
Rust (the game) uses EAC and has a Linux native client. At least it did last time I played it on OpenSUSE. I haven't played it in a while. The lead developer has expressed regret for supporting Linux.

Oh yeah, 7 Days to Die also uses EAC on Linux.

cferr··on Amazon asks court to halt Microsoft's work on Pentagon 'war cloud'
Well, he is head of the executive branch which the DoD falls under. He can issue whatever order he wants. It's up to the court to decide if they are/were lawful. SOP doesn't mean a whole lot here.
cferr··on Making Python Programs Blazingly Fast
Seeing as the interpreter takes about 60-70 ms to just start up and do nothing, I don't think we're going to be seeing any benchmarks in the microseconds.

    $ time python -c pass

    real 0m0.062s
    user 0m0.011s
    sys 0m0.042s
That was the quickest of three runs on one of my servers.
cferr··on Build an 8-bit computer from scratch
Louis Rossmann does in depth component level Macbook motherboard repairs and circuitry explanations. If you're into good (and comedic) explanation on mechanical stuff, I highly recommend AvE and This Old Tony.
cferr··on Ask HN: I am addicted to Porn. Help me quit
Leave it on the coffee table or kitchen table when not in use. It's then nearby the majority of the time to hear notifications, but it's located in a common room of the house.
cferr··on KaiOS
I have an Alcatel GO Flip stuck on KaiOS 1.0. It's terrible. I have to reboot the phone at least once a day or it slows down to the point where the UI doesn't respond to certain events, such as initiating a call.

The UI and functionality would be nice if not for the bugs. Maybe they have fixed a bunch of them in later releases, but my provider isn't providing updates.

cferr··on Neovim v0.4.0
Shift + Insert works on every platform I've tried it on. Ctrl-V/C are Unix console commands.
cferr··on Vegan takeaway orders quadruple over past two years
If we're talking steak in particular, it's going to be faster than any palatable vegetable based dish every time. Total cook time is about five minutes, and prep is less than a minute.

Also in particular, stir frying isn't a great example of a vegetable preparation which is fast. Prep is usually at least twice the amount of time as the frying.

Peanut butter celery sticks would be a better example I think.

cferr··on Roblox hits 100M monthly active users, bigger than Minecraft
Don't forget about the equip enchanting system, potion brewing, fishing, The End, treasure hunting maps, village raids, and most recently the villager trading system overhaul. The game is so completely different now than it was ten years ago, it's crazy.
cferr··on Ask HN: Your favourite tutorial for total beginners?
Rails is modern. People still develop with it. Something like Perl and its frameworks would not be considered modern, probably.
cferr··on Ethiopia Plants 350M Trees in One Day to Combat Drought and Climate Change
That's after they grow up though, right?
cferr··on Everybody Be Cool, This Is a Robbery
Leave it to Blackhat to implement a site which won't let you go back a page.
cferr··on The decline of the family has unleashed an epidemic of loneliness
"Wanna help me move?" is my favorite. Nothing like getting a free workout with a friend or family. You might even get a dinner out of it too.
cferr··on Ask HN: Does anyone still use IRC?
That's only intended to be a band-aid until you can do a reboot without heavily impacting users. Say your monthly maintenance isn't for another two weeks, but there's a kernel vulnerability that's very worrisome. You may be able to kpatch it, but you do still need to do a reboot later.
cferr··on Use zsh as the default shell on your Mac
You can setup command-line flag completion in bash as well. For example, on my Linux systems I have this line in my .bashrc to autocomplete systemd unit file names for when I run systemctl:

  complete -W "$(systemctl list-unit-files|cut -f1 -d' '|tail -n+2|head -n-2)" systemctl
Bash also allows you to cd to common directories, but again, you have to set it up. You set the CDPATH variable to one or more paths, and then you can cd to relative subdirectories without typing out the absolute path.
cferr··on Ask HN: Can we build Ironman's Jarvis with 2019 tech?
This looks very close to what I was looking for about a year ago when I wanted to try my hand at making my own 'personal assistant'. I was thinking something like the Star Trek computer but just for data lookups and binary execution rather than calculations and data analysis.

e.g. "Computer, look up 'can cats eat pancakes?'" which would just open Firefox and input that in a DDG search, or, "Computer, play the song 'Never Gonna Give You Up'" which would open WMP and play that song from my offline music library. Ideally it would vocally respond with some pre-baked yes/no responses before executing the command.

Is that doable with your software? Does it have a Python API?

cferr··on A former lead designer of Gmail fixes Gmail with a Chrome extension
I'm not on a machine I can access Gmail from right now, so I can't say if it appears the same size on my screen. However, just for perspective, HN's logo with name is ~122x22. I like that it stays at the top of the page and can go out of view with scrolling. Gmail's logo is always in view, taking screen space.
cferr··on Microsoft Is Winning the Techlash
And Microsoft botches acquisitions

Not all of them. They've done well with Mojang.

cferr··on Name one thing in this photo
Caffeine is a diuretic. If he isn't drinking decaf, it's a net loss.
cferr··on Startups that launched at Y Combinator’s W19 Demo Day 1
In addition to your presented options:

3) Bus

4) Kid Walks/cycles themself

5) Mom drives them herself

With these already being available options, I don't understand why anyone would be trying to solve what appears to me to be a solved problem, getting kids to school.

cferr··on Is WSL actually ready for developers?
I don't think I could be nearly as productive without my home and end keys. I even use insert quite often, because Ctrl+V doesn't paste in a Linux console. Shift+Insert works pretty much everywhere though.
cferr··on Martin Shkreli steers his company from prison with contraband cellphone
You're breaking the rules here as well as being incredibly rude.
