cerberusss··on Disabling Snaps in Ubuntu 20.04
> I don't want to run that garbage on my desktop

Please read the HN guidelines: "Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work". Link at the bottom-left.

cerberusss··on I’ve made a conscious effort to stop apologizing for bugs in my code
Yeah I'd accept it from my dentist. A couple of years ago, they gave me a dental crown for one of my upper right molars. Two months later, it chipped. It felt weird in my mouth.

Why wouldn't this be acceptable? They source that crown from a supplier, and apparently there was a fault with it.

cerberusss··on File Integrity 6: Which image format is most resilient?
Very nice, thanks!
cerberusss··on File Integrity 6: Which image format is most resilient?
If you're afraid of file corruption, install par2 with homebrew.

My procedure for pictures is that monthly, I copy them off of my phone onto my storage. Then I run par2 in that directory to add a parity file. That all goes onto the backup.

cerberusss··on Libschrift: A lightweight TrueType font rendering library
To compile and run on macOS:

Install XQuartz:

  $ brew cask install xquartz
Then run it from the terminal:

  $ open /Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app
Clone libschrift from Github, then edit the file config.mk and update lines 14 and 15 as follows:

  X11INC = /opt/X11/include
  X11LIB = /opt/X11/lib
Then compile and run the demo:

  $ make
  $ export DISPLAY=":0"
  $ ./sftdemo
You should see a "Hello world" app.

I'm utterly delighted that you have the courage to just put it out there. It doesn't need to be complete at all. For some purposes (for example rendering a font that consists of shapes), the current state of the code may actually be perfect.

I didn't realize that the percentage is that small! However now that I think about it, mobile could be an excellent place to use this library.
cerberusss··on Libschrift: A lightweight TrueType font rendering library
Yeah, that's what the developer mentions in the readme. I wonder though, is it such a big deal in the era of 4K displays?
cerberusss··on Oil plunges below zero for first time with May contract ending
Marvelous story, thanks for sharing.
cerberusss··on Elfeed with Tiny Tiny RSS
TT-RSS is pretty great. For Android, I suggest the open source client of the same name, from the same author. For iOS, I suggest "tiny Reader RSS":

cerberusss··on Apple changes default MacBook charging behavior to improve battery health
Maybe the Thunderbolt 3 MacBooks have enough capacity to spare?
cerberusss··on What are you reading in summer of 2020?
Swift for Good, by many authors

cerberusss··on Userscripts Are Fun and Are Still Very Much Relevant
Oh really? Especially on mobile, that's useful to know, thanks!
cerberusss··on Userscripts Are Fun and Are Still Very Much Relevant
I've set Firefox its default search engine to DDG. Then if the search results are unsatisfying, I search again but now prepend the search with !g for Google, or !gi for Google Images.
cerberusss··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
Thanks, that makes things different. I should've looked better at this particular case!
cerberusss··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
The same could be said about a CEO who cuts everybody with 10% and gets a huge bonus at the same time. I'm not disagreeing with you, though.
cerberusss··on Rediscovering CardDAV
As far as I know, Android doesn't support CalDAV or CardDAV. Any apps I tried were lacking in some way or another. How did you get Android to sync with Fruux?
cerberusss··on Firefox 75.0
Very useful setting, thanks for pointing it out!
cerberusss··on The Global Dollar Short Squeeze
It does spell doom, but the problem is the whole timing thing. Since you can't predict the future, I think it makes sense to not get out of dollar denominated assets, but simply not go 100% in on it.
cerberusss··on Dwellito Mini Office
That door is beautifully done.
cerberusss··on Swift: Google’s Bet on Differentiable Programming
The height for me was when Chris talked about the Python integration, somewhere after 0:24:30. Marco asks jokingly: "can you also do PHP integration?" Chris is silent for two seconds, then continues as though nobody said anything :-)

To be fair, he does answer the question a minute later.

cerberusss··on If you imagine a business making surgical facemasks is working 24/7, guess again
Parent noted they're a a medical professional involved in procuring PPE for a small health chain. Above comment should not be voted down, IMHO.
cerberusss··on How I lost control of our bank accounts to a phone scammer
Of course you can spoof anybody's address. Depending on the protocol, you may not be able to get it working. But if it's UDP, you can definitely spoof someone's IP address.
cerberusss··on Apple's MacOS Server has a 1.5/5 rating on the Mac App Store
My solution is to create par2 files. This is a manual solution though, and doesn't help you when you go and edit the original pictures. But what's great about par2 is that you can it allows you to correct errors.
cerberusss··on Latest Xkcd Comic went 404?
Yup, I had the same problem. But now it appears ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
cerberusss··on Linux 5.6

Wow, that's very, very generous of you!

NextDNS is fantastic. I use it to block ads on my iPhones and iPads.
cerberusss··on When To Chat: Reconcile Time Zone Differences
Indeed, macOS supports something similar. The notification center has a World Clock widget. I've got friends in Illinois, India and Australia, and it's incredibly useful to have a couple of clocks right there.
cerberusss··on Chrome phasing out support for User-Agent
I don't know this technology, but I'd really recommend using a VPN that provides a SOCKS proxy for your Bittorrent connections. Otherwise you're just announcing your IP address related to your torrent activities to the whole world.
