centdev··on Show HN: Dealora – What we learned starting up
Clickable link: https://dealora.com/
centdev··on Ask HN: How did you take your freelance web development biz to the next level?
The easiest thing we did when we needed to scale was to work with a number of other web dev shops. Some were 1 man operations and others slightly larger. Not only did this help us grow, but we also made additional revenue when they passed us work they couldn't handle due to time/experience.
centdev··on Ask HN: Cloned side project
Continue to work on it if your approach differs. There are not unique ideas but it depends on who executes it better.
centdev··on To www or not to www?
No as long as you 301 to one of them.
centdev··on Ask HN: Should I remind users that their card is about to be charged?
We have a similar setup. 15 day trial with cc as per of registration. We sent a few emails in thos 15 days. 1st is the welcome. If they haven't logged in more than once we send another email on day 7 to be sure see the value and if they need help and about their trial. On day 14 we send a reminder about their trial. Day 15 we charge. We will gladly refund the charge up before their 2nd due date.
centdev··on Ask HN: How do you send money to friends?
If they are a friend, I meet up with them in person and give them cash.
centdev··on Show HN: GeoTreat.com: Delight Website Visitors by Their Geolocation
Can I check out a live demo? Looks interesting.
centdev··on Ask HN: When should a startup lease office space?
If you are already in an apt then the need for an office space is minimal. But if getting an office space will improve productivity then when you get the $80k. In NC we have an 1100 sq ft office space to work closer together and pay $750 a month. It has increased our productivity by 5x. If the business is going to fail based on a $750 monthly expense then it's time to rethink the model IMHO. For us it went from building a SaaS in 6 months down to 2 months. Your mileage may vary.
centdev··on Ask HN: When should a startup lease office space?
If you need an office because you can't live together or if there are few team members and it would be more productive to work in the same room you can get an inexpensive office for less than 4 people for a few hundred dollars a month.
centdev··on Ask HN: Do you prefer to receive HTML or plain text email?
Are the emails targeted toward the tech community or avg consumers? Consumers think IMHO HTML emails are pretty. The tech community would think plain text is better. It all depends on that majority target audience.
centdev··on Ask HN: How can I help your business grow?
Contact me. We are building our MVP and would to get your thoughts (assuming you are bombarded by other requests).
centdev··on Tell HN: How we bootstrapped to the #1 rated mattress on Amazon.com
Mattresses may be marketed for a long life span but they rarely last that long. I've had a queen size $3k mattress that lasted 8 years. Bought a $1.5k replacement that lasted 1.25 years before it had noticeable body impressions. Mattressfirm replaced it in warranty. A $2k mattress at 4 years is $1.38 per day. You won't notice a mattress is destroying your back until it's too late.
centdev··on Ask HN: Should I validate a client's idea?
As everyone seems to agree, you're being contracted to build a web app for the client. The business model and marketing behind it, is essentially his challenge.

> I'm not sure that in all good conscience I can take on a project that is going to cost him a lot of money and not be successful.

No one can ultimately say a project will be successful or not as there have been good ideas that died, and bad ideas that took off.

Take the money, build the best web app that you can build.

centdev··on Ask HN: Have you experienced a coding dream?
I've done this before. I think sleeping allowed my brain to figure out a solution that I had struggled with for hours under pressure while awake. I can only recall this happening twice.
centdev··on Ask HN: How do you become a morning person?
I was in a similar situation. For me the best time to push code into production was late night (between 1-2am). And with kids, I was still getting up 6:30am. Even on the weekends when I try to stay away from computers, I usually couldn't go to sleep until 2am anyway. Over time I just became wired like this until I made it a point to go to sleep 15 mins earlier than the previous week whether I felt tired or not. Now I go to usually around 11:30pm and although I find myself waking up without an alarm clock at 5am, I still have an opportunity to get extra sleep if I need to.
centdev··on What was the first app/ webapp that you created?
When I was wide-eyed, I built a lot of webapps that never saw the light of day -- various forms of social networks for niche groups. They were poorly written (saw some source code a few months and I nearly cringed) and I failed to do any market research before I started them -- but they actually taught me a lot.
centdev··on Poll: Music while coding: Yes/No and What Kind?
For some reason I cannot work in silence especially when writing code. I tend to listen to rock, rap, drum and bass, dub step. Anything loud. Headphones on. Anything with a high bpm tends to help me.
centdev··on Ask HN: What subscriptions do you use (and pay for)?
Digital ocean, basecamp, beanstalkapp, netflix
centdev··on Network Solutions is experiencing a DNS outage
Cloudflare for DNS is awesome. Worth looking into if you have DNS at netsol.
centdev··on Ask HN: Smartest thing you've ever done?
Balancing work and personal life/family.
centdev··on Ask HN: My startup is launching in a few weeks and I'm terrified. Advice?
Mistakes and failures will ultimately make you a better person. Learn to identify them and find solutions. Everyone has probably made them at some point.
centdev··on Ask HN: I'm afraid I will always be a mediocre developer
You can be a mediocre programmer and do great things. You can be a great programmer and not achieve the success relative to your level. It's all completely relative. I'm an ok-to-decent programmer and turned a sizeable profit on $7k worth of time. I'm not putting my kids through college but improved my family's life and I'm content with that.

Learn as much as you can. Build often even if they never see the light of day. You will always improve your skills by being active in it. At some point it will make you better for you. Don't compare yourself to others. Be better than you used to be. You'll be fine.

centdev··on Ask HN: Holding on to the source code till you get paid?
As a subcontractor / freelancer (and I'm not a lawyer), you owe them the code they have actually paid for based on the time you've worked. While it may be illegal to withhold all of the source code, it is not if you retain the code that hasn't been paid for. Also, your contract with them should stipulate the terms.
centdev··on Give HN: Interested in Free a Google Analytics crash course?
Interested
centdev··on Ask HN: Questions about Wordpress
Depends. It can be done by one first. Typically plugins don't modify theme/design, so nothing will need to be done when you add new plugins.

If you need help, let me know.

centdev··on Ask HN: What are some of your favorite documentaries?
Mixtape, Inc. -- I know it's nowhere near tech related but I was involved.
centdev··on Ask HN: Getting That First Client?
Contact me, email in profile.
centdev··on Ask HN: Worth spending $6000 on this domain?
It's worth $6k if it means that much to you. Regardless of if others think its worth it or not or even if $6k is a good value for it. If you can justify it for $6k then get it.
centdev··on Ask HN: What do you do?
I'm the CTO of a company that I co-founded 13+ years ago that designs and builds mobile and web apps. I'm also the CTO of a digital media publisher handling scaling, infrastructure, tech initiatives to grow the company. And in my spare time I built and launch a number of web sites and apps to address problems I had with other apps.
