cenal··on Frameworks Don't Make Much Sense
Frameworks make perfect sense if you don't know what you are doing. I've seen way too many inexperienced developers that try their hand with coding something from scratch only to have the product development fail spectacularly and never launch.

If you are as accomplished as the author then a framework is probably going to only slow him down. In full disclosure I've worked with the author. Peteris Krumins is an extremely talented developer who has a very cool startup called Browserling (http://www.browserling.com) for those of you who need browser based testing.

cenal··on Valley VCs Sit on Cash, Forcing Startups to Dial Back Ambition
Valuations are out of whack. They are smarter to sit back and let the unsustainable ventures die out and then invest in the viable ones after things level out.

I mean, even a touch screen toaster that costs $1,500 got invested in. Who is going to pay $1500 for a touch screen toaster? http://www.juneoven.com

cenal··on Time has come for Zynga to sell the farmville
As a founder I hope that should this go to court that Pincus prevails. These funds invested knowing about the risks and the rules. They should be forced to honor that agreement. Even if Pincus isn't doing a great job he's not unethical for raising money on his terms. All founders should hope to be in his position when they go to raise.
cenal··on CEO
Sometimes things seem obvious to some but not others. I'm glad he put this out there.

I also put some ideas down in a Medium article last week. https://medium.com/@lanec/what-to-expect-as-a-new-ceo-9489df...

There are a lot of things to learn when you are becoming a CEO.

cenal··on AT&T sues Louisville to stop Google Fiber from using its utility poles
It's about to launch. Starting in Medicine and moving to other research projects that follow the scientific method shortly thereafter.
cenal··on Welsh-made hydrogen car prototype unveiled for trial
I think Hydrogen Fuel Cells are the future of the automotive world. No range limitations exist once the infrastructure for refueling is in place. It's going to be interesting to see how the next 20-30 years of automotive technology plays out between these alternative fuels and the autonomous driving technologies.
cenal··on The Political War on Cash
The first step on getting it right is not having the highest corporate tax rate in the world. Let's incentivize the corporations to repatriate their money.
cenal··on Silicon Valley startups rein in spending and prepare for layoffs
I wonder why http://MatterMark.com isn't covering more about this. I'd be interested in seeing what they have to say since their entire business is monitoring these trends.
cenal··on Pandora Is Said to Have Held Talks About Selling Itself
Is there a venture backed company that hasn't had this kind of conversation?

I don't see how you could raise money without having this kind of conversation.

cenal··on Hoverboard fires
I'd like to point out that there are responsible players in this industry.

My buddy has one of these: http://onewheel.com/

It's very well constructed and it's his daily transportation to and from work (weather permitting).

The problem units all seem to be inexpensive products built to fail. The same is true with second hand batteries for laptops and has been covered by the media.

http://www.howtogeek.com/172680/danger-why-you-shouldnt-buy-...

The trouble is with Hover Boards you get shoddy quality electronics gear with dangerous power sources. It's a terrible mix.

cenal··on Amazon's customer service backdoor
I used Pair right after they were accredited as a registrar in the 90's up till the mid 2000's but found they were expensive both for domain registration and for hosting. Great customer service but for a commodity like a domain name it's just not worth it for me.
cenal··on Pharma Paid Physicians $6.5B in 2014 – Looking into the Open Payments Dataset
If anyone is currently conducting medical or scientific research and would like to be part of a new beta for a platform that should make your lives easier let me know.

cenal··on WebTorrent – BitTorrent over WebRTC
Not to mention those of us with cell phone plans that have bandwidth restrictions. This could be very bad for our phone bills.
cenal··on "Customers are likely to see regressions with Windows 7 ongoing servicing"
I remember when XP shipped and people bemoaned the Tinker Toy GUI that it came with. Years later people are still complaining about change in the UI of operating systems by Microsoft. At least with Windows 10 they seem to be dedicated to sticking with something for a while as they plan to continuously update the same OS for a long while.
cenal··on 13k BTC, 300k LTC Stolen from Cryptsy Exchange
2016

Seemingly this is the year that Bit Coin stumbled.

cenal··on The resolution of the Bitcoin experiment
I am not surprised to see this first attempt at radically changing how we think of currency is having trouble. I'm surprised that the Winklevoss Twins bought so heavily into it. Hopefully the investors in this industry can take the reigns away from China.

cenal··on TrendMicro Node.js HTTP server listening on localhost can execute commands
This is basically my stance at this point.
cenal··on TrendMicro Node.js HTTP server listening on localhost can execute commands
This is clearly a terrible design flaw by Trend Micro. I hope some responsible are looking for new jobs.

Still, there isn't much faith I put in any endpoint security solutions. They are all terrible.

Bromium seems to be bucking the trend of traditional endpoint security but they have one of the worst sales / business dev programs I have ever seen. They should be much more ubiquitous than they are.

cenal··on TrendMicro Node.js HTTP server listening on localhost can execute commands
More ridiculous than that time Microsoft shipped an operating system with no firewall enabled by default and a feature designed to allow for remote commands to be executed?

I think the Blaster Worm and other variants that took advantage of that excellent decision were far worse.

cenal··on Yahoo’s Brain Drain Shows a Loss of Faith Inside the Company
The VC bubble is already popping and it's going to affect this year but I don't think it will have as much of an impact on the economy as the Chinese stock market collapsing to more realistic valuations.

Let's also keep in mind that the world is becoming more automated, not less, so this isn't going to be last time we see bubble valuations in our lifetime.

cenal··on Three Years as a One-Man Startup
I agree that the value isn't there for $25/month but charging $5/month isn't going to make him any money either. I would change this so customers get one (basic) lesson per language for free then have to pay to keep going. For that I would charge $75 for the year on each language. That would be a small bump on the annual but he'd be getting paid up front.
cenal··on Chinese Markets Halted, Equities Plunge Another 7%
The great recession of 2016 has begun.

This is China finally having their 2008 and it impacting the world.

cenal··on Time Warner Cable says up to 320,000 customers' data may have been stolen
Don't worry. The government already has all your information.
cenal··on Thepiratebay.com domain has been suspended
Finally a casualty of those emails that domain owners get where we are "required" to verify our information for ICANN.
cenal··on Avast’s man in the middle
The bigger question here is the relevance of endpoint security like Avast in the grand scheme of things. It seems like the effectiveness of these solutions has waned in the last 10 years. I've read that the most effective way to combat endpoint infections is to limit the user privileges for the endpoint user. No local admin nonsense and you mitigate 90% of endpoint issues.
cenal··on Cheap DNA Sequencing Is Here – Writing DNA Is Next
Exciting and scary at the same time. Here's to hoping people don't go overboard.
cenal··on Google Cloud revenue could be bigger than ads
Google should just buy Digital Ocean and build their cloud around that. I know it's not on the same level of sophistication as their existing offerings but who cares? It's so affordable and easy to get up and running with that it's easily the best acquisition target for them.
