cenal··on Apple Names Deirdre O’Brien Senior Vice President of Retail and People
Biggest issue I’ve seen was the change of sending retail employees out for training at the mothership to doing it at the stores. That’s a huge cultural shift and a horrible horrible horrible idea.
cenal··on California's constitution makes affordable housing hard to build
After Cabrini Green I read that Chicago mandated a section of all new big residential projects have section 8 units inside them alongside the luxury rentals.

It makes sense to put those less well off around more affluent folks to help keep criminal activity from pooling.

Cabrini Green showed that these large scale public housing projects are unpoliceable.

cenal··on Criminals Are Tapping into the Phone Network Backbone to Empty Bank Accounts
It was disconnected for a long time after they stole it. They hopped carriers all the time as well making it difficult to keep track of who had it.

The thieves were not new to this.

cenal··on Microsoft’s Resurgence Under Satya Nadella
Azure Active Directory leaves a lot to be desired.

Seem like a phenomenal miscalculation to not have this built out as a cloud service already.

It would help keep more small companies in a Windows ecosystem and bring them into office 365.

The version they have today seems to offer 10% of the on premise solution.

cenal··on Insurance Company Says NotPetya Is an “Act of War”, Refuses to Pay
If insurance stops paying out then companies will take data security more seriously. Their very existence will depend on it.

Net win for society from my perspective.

cenal··on Criminals Are Tapping into the Phone Network Backbone to Empty Bank Accounts
Ironton Global.

Terrible company.

cenal··on Apple restores Google’s internal iOS apps after certificate misuse punishment
Devils advocate here but who would still use an iPhone if Google and Facebook pulled their apps?

It’s all sunshine and rainbows if this ends here but if it escalated it would be worse for Apple than they think.

cenal··on Criminals Are Tapping into the Phone Network Backbone to Empty Bank Accounts
Someone stole 415-867-5309 from me by forging the port paperwork. My carrier refused to do a port back.

I filed an FTC complaint and they couldn’t have cared less.

Phones are a broken system.

cenal··on Show HN: Open startups with their revenue, metrics, and stories
If you want to read content and engage in conversation with folks who boot strap this is a site I found on hacker news a while back that’s been good: https://barnacl.es
cenal··on Rural America's “brain drain”: How student debt is emptying small towns
The market worked before the student loan bubble.

Remove the endless supply of money for relatively useless degrees and you’ll end the issue.

cenal··on Apple Lays Off 200 Employees from Autonomous Car Unit
Plenty of smart people are staying away thanks to the increasing costs to live in the Bay Area.
cenal··on They Build Spacecraft and Fight Epidemics; Shutdown May Scare Them Away
Some very broke people borrow money so they can look well dressed. Appearances can be deceiving.
cenal··on Launch HN: Upsolve (YC Nonprofit W19) – TurboTax for Bankruptcy
How do you handle security with such sensitive information being uploaded?
cenal··on Sequel Pro – Open source macOS native MySQL GUI client
Mojave was a really painless upgrade for me compared to previous upgrades.

MacOS High Sierra was the worst upgrade for me. The APFS update borked my laptop and they dropped support for the integrated raid card from my 2010 Mac Pro.

cenal··on Nothing Can Stop Google. DuckDuckGo Is Trying Anyway
Google Apps with a custom domain was once free for as many email accounts as you were approved for. There are a handful out there with lots more than 10 free accounts. They don’t get support, have less space provided, and can’t use the outlook connector so it’s not an equal comparison. It’s nice that google hasn’t changed this on their users.

Zoho recently restricted their free custom domain service for email. Not sure who is the best free option out there now.

cenal··on Shutdown Will Be Worse for Economy Than First Thought, White House Says
Watched this video from CBS News recently and it looks like portions of the wall in place are sticks with wire: https://youtu.be/5o4d6Wp3u2Q
cenal··on WeWork’s CEO Makes Millions as Landlord to WeWork
It’d give even fewer incentives to take a company public.
cenal··on IBM internal secret docs show deliberate axing of older staff
GE is also in the running for next dead giant.

I keep expecting Macy’s to be bought by Amazon. I guess they will have to decline further before Bezos can ensure the Thanksgiving parade changes and is Amazon branded.

cenal··on Steve Jobs on why Xerox failed

cenal··on 'Dear NIMBYs' – An Open Letter from a Homeless Woman in LA
Poor people can’t just leave. They lack the resources to get started in a new community.
cenal··on Detroit's Big Comeback: Out of Bankruptcy, a Rebirth
The Midwest has a plethora of good opportunities for investors. It’s not overpriced like most of the coasts. Couple that with qualified opportunity zones and things will be heating up this year.

Starting a fund soon with someone who has made millions in real estate within the Midwest. We intend to help others profit in these markets. Fund isn’t formed yet, we are not soliciting for investors yet. If you want more info feel free to check http://www.activatedcapital.com for updates.

cenal··on How the Valley treats experienced people
True but you can roll your own infrastructure for much less than it cost 20 years ago. Smart companies rely on cloud up to a tipping point. Then it becomes more cost effective to put in your own infrastructure. AWS and other cloud providers lure customers in with low costs but they get stuck paying a fortune as they start scaling.
cenal··on Migration trends in U.S. metro areas
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 was engineered to do this.

Punish blue state earners with higher taxes. These folks flee into red states and hopefully bring some jobs with them.

cenal··on Windows Sandbox
If you run a business the folks at http://bromium.com do this at an enterprise level.
cenal··on The U.S. National Academies Reports on the Prospects for Quantum Computing
Glad to see this but it doesn’t eliminate the issues surrounding how many less sophisticated encryption algorithms have been used.

The millennium bug got fixed only because we put money into solving it. That kind of emphasis needs to be put behind addressing the forthcoming encryption crisis.

cenal··on China introduces ‘social’ punishments for scientific misconduct
Will this weaken the scientific community in China?

Will this cause researchers to become adverse to speaking out for fear of retaliatory attacks on themselves?

Seems like a major step in the wrong direction for Chinese society.

cenal··on Experts Urge U.S. To Continue Support for Nuclear Fusion Research

cenal··on Google transferred ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo
Reminds me of when Microsoft invested in Apple to keep that business alive.
cenal··on Google transferred ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo
Its been my primary search for about two years as well.

I like that it uses Yelp vs Google listings. Yelp has its issues but Google listings are usually less reliable.
