cema··on Agent fired from literary agency for using Parler and Gab
No they are not positing they _only_ prior on the left are doing it.

Militant left is as dangerous as militant right. The problem is not the side of the political spectrum but the approach to dealing with opponents.

cema··on Universal basic income seems to improve employment and well-being
Really depends on the country. And in a country could friend on the city. For example, in the Soviet Union, Moscow was off limits to the people who did not have a permanent place to live (as registered in the internal passport). They were forced out but not necessarily imprisoned, just moved to "the 101st kilometer" (outside the 100 kilometer zone, that is). I think Leningrad was like that too. Even in the USSR it was uneven: Russian and I think Ukraine were like that, the Baltic republics were not, not sure about Central Asia.

These are all historical anecdotes, nothing more. No claim about it being or not being intrinsic to the socialist society etc.

cema··on GitHub Codespaces
Not really. At least: the web happened well before IE was introduced as an answer. In contrast, VS Code was invented much later than git which at the time was an established technology and in some ways a standard.
cema··on Soviet Santa
Close languages often sound funny to reach other.
cema··on Soviet Santa
Joke is, it is pronounced "dead morose". Close but not quite (the first word is more like "dzed").
cema··on A personal story about 10× development
Yes. I think this "raising up the team" is called servant leadership. Not many people know how to do it, and it seems not many want to, because it does not help then look like heroes.
cema··on Feynman's Lost Lecture (ft. 3Blue1Brown) [video]
That would be an invention.
cema··on The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro (1852)
Absolutely! Actions should be more important than the names. However the names are not just labels, they often have meanings.
cema··on Python 3 at Facebook

Industry seems to expect CS degrees to be vocational degrees.
Yes, I think you hit the nail on the head here. Unfortunately, in some places software developers are treated not so much as engineers as more like advanced technicians.
cema··on Python 3 at Facebook
Well, unfortunately many (both tech and non-tech) companies still want to hire developers with "x years of y language, n years of m framework" and so on. So there is some reason to ask for specific languages in the curriculum, from that purely practical point of view. Not everyone goes to work to a top place.
cema··on Can we start calling JavaScript EcmaScript?
I have a feeling it is gradually more and more known as Node.js, so maybe the name will propagate back to the web community.

EcmaScript has never caught on, for a number of reasons, some mentioned in earlier comments.

cema··on A Linguist Explains Why 'Laurel' Sounds Like 'Yanny'
I am another one of those cases who hear "laurel" for most of the spectrum and something like "yelly" at the extreme right side.

After hearing "yelly" at the rightmost position of the slider I still hear "yelly" as it slides to the left, becoming "laurel" at about one third of the way. After that, as I slide back to the right, I do not hear "yelly" until the rightmost position.

cema··on Too Clever by Half
Yes, I think you are right. In this sense, high school prepares children/teens for the real life really well. :-(
cema··on The rise of the pointless job
Strange experience indeed. I do not think I have ever seen that in any of USA airports, large or small.
cema··on Ask HN: What do you consider resume red flags?
Lies are not just a red flag but a stop sign, but how do you recognize them?
cema··on Ask HN: What do you consider resume red flags?
So what do you do? How do you win attention of the hiring manager? I am asking because I may have (had) the same problem.
cema··on Ask HN: What do you consider resume red flags?

I'd rather see "waiting tables" rather than nothing
But why? Maybe the person used that time to study technologies, to update her skill set. Maybe she used that time to relax and get a long deserved vacation. (Or a myriad other possibilities.) What is wrong with that?
cema··on Things I Learned from a Job Hunt for a Senior Engineering Role
Probably s.tolower() or whatever it is in Python.
cema··on Was there a civilization on Earth before humans?
I think you are fighting a metaphor with another metaphor. Saying that ants form a society indeed implies assigning them human characteristics (anthropomorphism) but saying that they are neurons basically suggests that there are common models to represent an ant colony as well as a neural system. Frankly, I am not sure that the latter approach is more helpful.
cema··on Things I Learned from a Job Hunt for a Senior Engineering Role
I think what you described here is all too frequent and, frankly, infuriating. Obviously not the right way to hire people, but more profoundly, I think it reflects poorly on the collegiate nature of our profession.

Quote:

a large majority of candidates lie on their resumes
Is it really true? I do not think it has been my experience (some, but not the majority).
cema··on Soviet-Era Industrial Design

Most of the stuff remember being unreliable and needing repair.
Also looking pretty drab most of the time.
cema··on Probability Theory for Scientists and Engineers
Yes, and a number of them are now available for free over the internet. In Russian...
cema··on Duolingo Suddenly Has Over Twice as Much Language Learning Material
I think the definitive and most authoritative review of the Russian grammatical cases was done by Zaliznyak: http://inslav.ru/images/stories/pdf/2002_Zalizniak_RIS_i_sta..., in Russian, pages 36-55. Fascinating reading.
cema··on Duolingo Suddenly Has Over Twice as Much Language Learning Material
I think "пива" is the partitive case, though.
cema··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
Yes, SQL engines tend to be much smarter than the SQL languages as such.
cema··on The screen that set off the ballistic missile alert on Saturday
"Good enough for government work". The lowest bidder, etc.

I have seen a large number of government web sites, and most of them, especially at the state level (I am talking about US states), have a horrible UX.

cema··on Mistakes to avoid when asking for a raise
Right. Well, sometimes leaving is good -- for instance, when the new company is so exciting, or when the old one, uh, isn't.
cema··on Mistakes to avoid when asking for a raise
Step 2 is not easy for everyone, plenty of people in our profession are shy. Step 3 is a big one, too.
cema··on Professional Dress Code Tips
Yeah, unfortunately. But not everywhere, fortunately!
