celticmusic··on Ask HN: What were the things you did that made the biggest impact at your work?
> and encouraging people to be discontent with multi-minute long build-test-debug (BTD) loop.

The ole eyebrow started twitching when I read this. I once had a 6 month contract with a RoR shop where they had such bad performance issues they started developing in production mode so it wouldn't reload everything constantly. This allowed you to make some changes quickly, but 90% of everything required you to restart the web server and it literally took minutes for it to load everything. They had close to 200 rubygems, and I've always guessed that was the core of the issue.

When I suggested we need to fix that issue, the senior did-an-internship-here-last-summer developer got extremely passive aggressive with me (I didn't renew that contract). This guy thought he was amazing, I remember him arguing with me about a bug where they were storing decimal numbers as float in MySQL. I seriously had a 30 minute long conversation where he told me repeatedly I was wrong until I finally got exasperated, made the changes, and it fixed the bug. The guy was couldn't believe it fixed the issue and spent another couple of hours looking for why I was wrong.

I've never touched RoR again, that experience was horrific.

Sometimes you can't help the slowness, but I know I seriously dislike header-only libraries in C++ specifically because of their effect on the BTD loop. I have no idea how people can tolerate working like that, it's a slow hell for me.

Can we maybe find our way to looking at something from a different perspective than this?

"My marriage is in a sorry state and ripe for disruption". wut?

celticmusic··on Improving my productivity as a working programmer (2017)
I'll often just forget my phone in my home office, sometimes for an entire weekend. I've had people ask me if I was unhappy with them because they called and I didn't get back with them immediately.

I know it makes me an old fucker, but I'm genuinely sad when I go someplace where we have to wait and it's just a sea of people on their phone with little to no interaction amongst themselves.

celticmusic··on Improving my productivity as a working programmer (2017)
> The article assumes that programmers are free to arrange their schedule. But that's only true if you're an independent contractor who's not deeply embedded in a team.

Then you take what you can do and leave the rest.

celticmusic··on Improving my productivity as a working programmer (2017)
The points were good, especially the one about writing a lot of code then wasting time trying to find the bug. I've actually seen people work like that and it drives me nuts.

I think you're right that the author is young, but that doesn't mean the observations aren't useful for those who haven't figured some of this stuff out for themselves.

it's known as a "bare metal hypervisor" and is the most commonly used hypervisor. If you look into things like vmware ESXi you'll see it in action.

The filesystem in general is known to be much slower on Windows due to it's extreme flexibility, but Linux design decisions assumed a much more performant filesystem. Hence why running linux on windows slammed into the performance problem.
celticmusic··on What's Gone Wrong in Schooling?
what if the author is writing about a trans person, which preference takes precedence? Did the author imply trans students don't exist when choosing to use a gender-specific pronoun to describe the student body?
celticmusic··on What's Gone Wrong in Schooling?
hmmm, I wonder if a trans person would agree...
celticmusic··on What's Gone Wrong in Schooling?
I don't understand why you would use the pronoun she in a context where the pronoun them and they would be wholly appropriate.
celticmusic··on What It's Like to Work on League of Legends
Their COO would literally walk up to an employee and flick their balls, smack their ass, HUMP on them, and fart in their face (not all at once, although does that matter?)

Maybe you consider that normal in game dev companies, but I have to believe that's outside the norm.

The guy got suspended without pay for 2 months.

Or I'm surprised at the notion that types in an OO language is the minimum bar for "turning into Java"?

That seems like a nonsensical litmus test.

celticmusic··on Things I Believe About Software Engineering
There were several of the bullet points that I thought fell under this. Nice soundbite, but doesn't really jive with reality.

This one is probably the most egregious though, in that great software is created BECAUSE people aren't aligned and those discussions/fights are had.

celticmusic··on New in PHP 8
I've seen a lot of people say this but I don't understand the sentiment, could you explain it?
celticmusic··on New in PHP 8
It was more about certain communities highly valuing "prettiness", such as RoR.
celticmusic··on China to inject $174B of liquidity on Monday as markets reopen
> Indeed, that was their initial message to the public for this virus.

You're going to have to source that because I have a friend who lives in China and he was telling me from the start that China was surprisingly open about all of it.

celticmusic··on China to inject $174B of liquidity on Monday as markets reopen
I have a friend in China right now who wants to leave but can't due to not having a reasonable way to make it to the airport. Apparently they're not allowing anyone to leave the city atm.
celticmusic··on Andrei Tarkovsky’s Message to the Young: “Learn to Be Alone” (2015)
I still remember the day I got lectured by someone on how I didn't really understand the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Maybe not, but it spoke to me in a way no other anime ever did and it's easily the #1 for me.

I obviously understood SOMETHING about it, even if it was just my own understanding.

celticmusic··on Andrei Tarkovsky’s Message to the Young: “Learn to Be Alone” (2015)
The Wire felt like real people, in a way that 99.9% of media doesn't.

I've read that some/most of the actors were actual police force at some point. I may be getting the details wrong, but I think that's why it felt so real, because it was real even if the specific situations were fiction.

celticmusic··on Andrei Tarkovsky’s Message to the Young: “Learn to Be Alone” (2015)
I've never seen this movie, nor am I a movie buff of any sort, but this was the experience I had watching Mr Hollands Opus.

The entire movie you're left wondering what the hell the plot is. What is the point of this movie. And then the ending happens and you realize the entire movie was crafted for the ending, and it wouldn't have had much impact without the journey before it.

what I specifically said (with emphasis)

> Companies like these are probably better off throwing money at the problem and putting it in the cloud. __THE SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED__ to successfully run something in the cloud __AND NOT COMPLETELY LOSE EVERYTHING__ is much lower. That's not to say there isn't skill involved, but you don't have to hire someone who may or may not decide to run your software that's involved in a multi-million dollar contract in a closet in your building.

celticmusic··on Command-line tools can be faster than a Hadoop cluster (2014)
I think the real answer is that you don't have to trust an employee's expertise.

I can give you a real life example.

Years ago I did work for this company that built flight simulators for the government. Millions of dollars rolling through their company. One day I get called up by this company and the woman is panicking because their website went down.

Well, come to find out, the entire site was running on a server sitting in an office of their building and the electricity went out due to a winter storm. To say that I was floored is an understatement. I started asking questions.

Well, when I did, the "sys admin" (and I'm putting that in quotes...) started talking to the owner of this company and it was ultimately decided that I couldn't be trusted.

Fast forward a few years and around august of last year this company contacts me again for more work. They apparently scored another huge government contract, built a new facility to be able to house actual government planes so they can strip them down and turn them into flight simulators and so forth.

While I'm at the facility I learn that they're running all their software off of a server sitting in the building. Now, this isn't completely unreasonable, especially for government work. But I again started asking questions.

- Is it environmentally controlled.

- Do you have a generator?

- Do you have multiple lines in case your ISP goes down (which 100% will happen at some point)

- Do you have backups?

- ARE YOU EXERCISING THOSE BACKUPS AT LEAST ONCE/QUARTER?

When this got back to the "sys admin", he was livid. I also found out that they didn't have the source code for the latest changes I made, despite me pushing said source code to a private git server this "sys admin" had stood up. Said virtual server apparently got removed when they moved facilities, but despite this the guy accused me of pushing it to my private github repo based purely on the fact that I stated in no uncertain terms that I had pushed that to the git repo.

But this software was a part of the government contract.

I just sent out an email the next day thanking them for the opportunity, but that I would have to pass on it.

My point is this.

They're an engineering company, that's where their expertise lies. But due to the nature of what they're doing, they were forced into the software side of things. They hired an incompetent.

Companies like these are probably better off throwing money at the problem and putting it in the cloud. The skill level required to successfully run something in the cloud and not completely lose everything is much lower. That's not to say there isn't skill involved, but you don't have to hire someone who may or may not decide to run your software that's involved in a multi-million dollar contract in a closet in your building.

celticmusic··on U.S. files lawsuits over robocall scams
I don't know the specific comments you're talking about, but it should be pointed out that truthful observations such as most of these scammers being indian isn't racist. Nor are warnings that if someone with an indian accent calls you out of the blue, be on your guard.

At the end of the day, not all humans are thieves, but I still attempt to prevent all humans from entering my house.

celticmusic··on U.S. files lawsuits over robocall scams
how is this allowed to be a thing?

The telco's themselves should be held legally responsible for the fraud in these cases.

If I hang up a phone, I expect that to be the end of it, period. Yes, that includes landlines.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: How do you process payments?
https://stripe.com/docs/api/events/list

> List events, going back up to 30 days.

If you're able to go further than that you may be paying extra for it.

Now, if you have the event id then you'll be able to pull it, but you can't simply list them out unless that documentation is lying.

celticmusic··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
I seriously hope you're able to succeed.
celticmusic··on Ask HN: How do you process payments?
Stripe only allows access to the last 30 days of events, it sounds like this 3rd party is offering a service of collecting that for longer (probably among other things).
