celerity··on Microsoft Pulling Free Development Tools for Windows 8 Desktop Apps
I think they should instead focus on making Metro appealing to develop on, rather than making it the only free option.

At least they still allow other compilers and any programming language.

I wish Ubuntu would step up their development resources game, so that it becomes less painful to do anything there.

celerity··on I'm leaving the Internet for a year
Wouldn't a better and easier solution be to simply practice restraint and limit yourself to several websites like Google Maps, Wikipedia, Email (once a day), Calendar (in the morning)? Then you can include other sites one-by-one to see which are most distracting, and block them.
celerity··on Poll: What is your primary operating system
Yes. Ignoring the home/end/page up/page down antics, this command screwed up the whole terminal for me.

grep "$search_string" -n -C 3 --color # color bugs out

celerity··on Poll: What is your primary operating system
Unfortunately, the terminal on OSX is incredibly buggy. Keeps incorrextly coloring commands, randomly failing... Perhaps it's because of the outdated bash they use?
celerity··on The Best Birth Control In The World Is For Men
In fact, if you check the Wikipedia article for this thing you will see a large amount of controversy and problems that the article just ignores. That alone is enough for me to not consider this seriously. It would indeed be nice if this form of birth control were real, but as things stand it's just vaporware for medicine.

It's really amazing to me how many people believe anything they want to hear...

celerity··on The Best Birth Control In The World Is For Men
First of all, it's still in trials. Second of all, what should set off an immediate alarm is the claim of "100% effectiveness" (and safety for that matter, what if the doctor screws up and cuts your tubes?).

No, thanks.

celerity··on Why I canceled my college subscription
It dedinitely makes sense to forego college for some people. However, in many scientific diaciplines (math, physics, biology, chemistry) it is virtually impossible to succeed without focused mentorship, an immersive environment, and in the case of experimental science, capital funding. I would also guess that many types of engineering require a similar atmosphere.

That is basically the reason why I find these discussions too sweeping and generalizing to be valid. What works for one person or field, might not apply to another.

In addition, for those who can afford it, college provides a tremendous general education and exploration opportunity.
