oh, and Happy New Year!

cedsav··on How to Hire and Build a Remote Team
They do, but all things considered, it's simpler to hire within the US when possible. You keep similar time-zone, work with native english speaker (usually), and have a well understood set of employment laws.
cedsav··on Find salaries paid at companies using foreign worker data
You have to meet or exceed prevailing wages for the area/position. The reason is to make sure you're not underpaying foreign workers at the expense of local US candidates.

We sponsored H1B applicants in the past, and the numbers were reviewed by the lawyer who took care of the application. We also had to post the opening notice internally, with the salary offered. And finally, as others have stated, the number is known by the sponsored employee, so there's really no incentive to inflate that number.

cedsav··on Did you ever wonder why December has 31 days? (1997)
And it's wrong. The email is from 1997, but now you can look it up on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_calendar

Short version - Julius didn't name the month after himself, the roman Senate did. There's good indications that July and August had 31 days before the reform, and February has less days because it was the last month of the year.

cedsav··on Ask HN: Would you pay for this service?
I understand what you're saying, but I'm actually inclined to think that (in our case) it doesn't matter what they do. We learn what we need to know from our customers and we have our own roadmap. We can keep tab on the competition, but getting periodical detailed reports seems counterproductive to me.
cedsav··on Ask HN: Would you pay for this service?
I wouldn't pay for it, but competitive research is a big and active market, so I don't doubt there's a demand for it. I suspect though that your audience would be mostly established businesses. Startups are usually too busy to worry about their competitor's every move.
cedsav··on Salesforce $1 Million Hackathon Update - Two Winners
FYI, Salesforce claimed no right on submitted code. http://events.developerforce.com/dreamforce/hackathon/faq
cedsav··on Umberto Eco: Exploring Imaginary Lands With One of Italy’s Masters of Fiction
I really liked the The Island of the Day Before. Truly fascinating. Foucault's Pendulum is good too, but like all his work, it's not an easy read. If you want something more intellectually rewarding than Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code), Eco is your guy.
cedsav··on We Work Remotely – New Job Board from 37 Signals
As an employer who sometimes work with part-time developer, it's just hard to find projects that fit in this kind of schedule. Unless you're in a different time zone, there's little opportunities to meet and coordinate (I like to spend time with my family in the evenings :-/ ) and progress is inevitably slow. For a freelance gig I'd be open to it, (or as a temporary solution to test the water before going full time), but not as a long term solution.
cedsav··on Show HN: I suck at remembering names, so I built an app to help
Just installed it and gave it a quick spin. My first issue is that I can't change the location beyond the local area, so I can't add people that I met a couple days ago in a different city. I understand that ideally, you want to add people right away while you remember their name, but in practice I'm not going to pull my phone right after we've been introduced.

I run a bootstrapped company. At the 3 year mark, I was just about in the same situation. Barely profitable, not enough cash to build a team, and making a lot of mistakes along the way. It's a tough spot to be in, especially when your competitors are getting all the attention. We're in a much better shape now, but it took another 3 years.

I'm guessing you'll eventually go back to founding a company, and you'll be better at it thanks to all the work you've done so far, and the experience you'll acquire at Facebook (yes, it helps seeing how large organizations are run, there are plenty of things they do well), so don't anguish too much over it, and thanks for sharing your perspective.

cedsav··on How I Fired Myself
Whoever was your boss should have taken responsibility. Someone gave you access to the production database instead of setting up a proper development and testing environment. For a company doing "millions" in revenues, it's odd that they wouldn't think of getting someone with a tiny bit of experience to manage the development team.

cedsav··on My Encounter With a Patent Troll
I think you were lucky that the patent was actually fought in court and close to a resolution. It's not always the case, so ignoring the troll may not be the best advice. Especially if the troll's lawyers are paid on a contingency basis. They have all the incentives to sue. It doesn't cost them anything, and any ruling in their favor reinforce their case.
cedsav··on Linus Torvalds won't do github pull requests
Maybe you're missing the importance of proper commit messages and the fact that github doesn't seem to steer users toward good habits. Given the size of his projects and the number of contributors, I find it reasonable to demand well documented and informative logs. As a developer, you have to be considerate of the time of people who have to decipher your work and intent. Obviously, it'd be better if the UI was prompting you to do so, so you don't have to suffer the wrath of the "opinionated" project owner ;-)

cedsav··on Storing 25 petabytes of Megaupload data costs us $9,000 a day
Technically, I think Carpathia can recover their costs from megaupload, even with the contract being terminated. If megaupload can't pay, then the insurer(s) should step in.
