cdme··on Big Tech's underground race to buy AI training data
The whole notion that AI can replace search is nonsense. It yields no benefit to the creators of the results it scrapes and the models hallucinate. It's worse for users and it's worse for everyone producing anything of note online.
cdme··on Big Tech's underground race to buy AI training data
Perplexity is already looking to include ads. Free is a hook to get users invested before they trap them and extract all the value for themselves.
cdme··on Big Tech's underground race to buy AI training data
They're more interested in eliminating jobs than creating them.
cdme··on Big Tech's underground race to buy AI training data
How are you supposed to trust "journalism" from a text generator that hallucinates? The information ecosystem is bad enough without running it through a text blender that's already hitting compute, power and data limits.
cdme··on Big Tech's underground race to buy AI training data
Google surfaces data — or it used to — LLMs and AI companies actively exploit it with zero benefit given to creators or users of the platforms they're now cannibalizing.
cdme··on Big Tech's underground race to buy AI training data
Frankly, it is and should be treated as such. The fact that they're dodging questions about their data sources is a red flag and a pretty clear indication that they know they're in the wrong and are fighting to become established enough to be in a position to, at best, ask for forgiveness after the fact.

All the more reason for comprehensive privacy/data protection legislation and a refusal to provide data to these companies wherever possible.
cdme··on The Wi-Fi only works when it's raining
Interesting! This was a relatively new apartment building in Hollywood with similarly aged cable — maybe he was right and I'm altogether wrong. They ran the cable up through vertically adjacent units as well which left you at some degree of mercy of your downstairs neighbors.
cdme··on The Wi-Fi only works when it's raining
I once had a Time Warner tech blame the moisture content of the air for impacting the copper cabling to explain outages at our apartment. This both makes more sense and, I suppose, is more interesting.

cdme··on The Reddits
Reddit going public meant reclaiming value they provided for "free" for users. The platform will only get worse for users as they try and claw their way to profitability.
cdme··on OpenAI's chatbot store is filling up with spam
A tool to generate spam content becomes plagued by it. Seems predictable.
cdme··on It's not AI generated music, it's AI generated noise
Ah yes, hubris.
cdme··on Suno, an AI music generator
Why do we need to waste infrastructure and capital to produce mindless output of questionable value?
cdme··on It's not AI generated music, it's AI generated noise
Much as nobody is entitled to live from tech trained on stolen content and works, I suppose.
cdme··on Suno, an AI music generator
No, this is filler generated by and for people that never appreciated music in the first place.
cdme··on Suno, an AI music generator
I don't. No. I can understand drum programming, which is leveraged by one of my favorite solo death metal artists (though he hired a live drummer when budget permitted).

There's a thought and intentionality to what's being created — I don't want what comes out of a prompt.

I want to follow artists and their output, not an algorithm or AI that mimics ones and is trained by questionably feeding on their output.

No, none of this is appealing. I can't control what anyone else does, but for me? No, no thanks.

cdme··on Suno, an AI music generator
Couldn’t be less interested — art is interesting for its human qualities. This is pointless dreck.

cdme··on Eloquent JavaScript 4th edition (2024)
This was the approach one of my first mentors recommended and it's served me well. Learn the core language and its features and then add tools/frameworks as needed. Lately it feels like we're teaching new devs popular frameworks and completely ignoring the fundamentals.

Eh, leave them down.
cdme··on Miles Davis and the recording of Kind of Blue
I’ve never seen this before — love it. Thanks.
cdme··on Miles Davis and the recording of Kind of Blue
Also a fantastic choice — I love so many of his albums for different reasons.
cdme··on Miles Davis and the recording of Kind of Blue
An undeniable classic, but I remain partial to Bitches Brew.
cdme··on I'm going to keep opting out
They _can_ engage in the behavior and the tactics, we can't control that — we can opt out at each turn and I'd argue we should given how invasive it's become.
cdme··on Go ahead and block AI web crawlers
It should be — it’s an accepted standard and would make their behavior even more dubious should they ignore it.
cdme··on Google cuts team of contractors who went on strike
Reagan was a categorically awful president and governor.
cdme··on California Approves Waymo Expansion to Los Angeles and SF Peninsula [pdf]
Having spent years driving there and the complexity/lackadaisical traffic patterns and enforcement — I quite doubt it. I'd expect them to have their own Cruise moment.
cdme··on California Approves Waymo Expansion to Los Angeles and SF Peninsula [pdf]
No thanks — driving in LA is dangerous enough.
