cdchn··on It's Time to Stop Taking Sam Altman at His Word
>simply because interacting with the environment might be a prerequisite for developing consciousness.

We can't even define what consciousness is yet, let alone whats required to develop it.

cdchn··on Most gamers prefer single-player games
Helldivers 2 over-tuned because they wanted to keep things in the difficulty levels they envisioned, and people were simply vocal because they wanted a power fantasy. Space Marines 2 delivered on that desire better than Helldivers 2 did.

I don't think I've ever seen a game company ever manage to put 100% of their changes in a CHANGELOG.

FromSoftware games like to put in cheese border-line bullshit mechanics to make you feel good when you overcome them, even if you have to cheese them yourself. They knew everybody was going to cheese regardless of the difficulty they just made a round-about way of making you feel like it was okay.

Some people like competitiveness in games, and like difficult games, and thats okay if you do or don't. Games need to find a product-market fit just like anything else.

cdchn··on Most gamers prefer single-player games
That's not really being competitive. You're not competing against the people in your squad.
cdchn··on Most gamers prefer single-player games
I think the real reason for focus on multiplayer is that it keeps the game fresh without things that are really half-baked like procedural world gen. That drives engagement- keeping people playing- which gives companies more opportunities to sell microtransactions, skins, etc.
cdchn··on Most gamers prefer single-player games
I wouldn't say its a dying breed. I think you see more non-competitive co-op games now than competitive multiplayer, especially with the huge success of games like Space Marines 2 and Helldivers 2 and the massive flops of Concord and XDefiant.

EDIT: typo meant non-competitive co-op

cdchn··on Canvas is a new way to write and code with ChatGPT
I don't care about not having IDE integration with this - this is a solved problem that I don't care about. It would be nice to have two-way synchronization though so I could run code locally, edit it with my local editor (not IDE) and sync it back up to make more changes in ChatGPT.
cdchn··on Is the world really running out of sand?
I hate to say this, but why aren't the Bitcoin miners jumping all over that?

I talked to these guys decades ago when I was working in a similar space and I'm glad to see they're keeping on keeping on.
cdchn··on TSMC execs allegedly dismissed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as 'podcasting bro'
It'd probably take decades to build that many fabs anyways.
cdchn··on TSMC execs allegedly dismissed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as 'podcasting bro'
One of these parties cares more about where the money comes from than the other.

I think the 7T number is his concept of what he can probably get a bunch of oil sheiks to give him.
cdchn··on Launch HN: Haystack (YC S24) – Visualize and edit code on an infinite canvas
Like I said, as long as you're not flying around- moving within it, then your inner ear doesn't care. Turning your head doesn't count. I don't see a need in a code-in-VR system to move like that. And most VR games solve this my having your teleport instead of translate.

I think the barf routine is because when your brain senses your vestibular system not working it thinks "oops I must be poisoned" and tries to make you throw up.

cdchn··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
I think they're both overhyped by sci-fi optimism but I would agree (even being mostly an AI minimalist) the impact of LLMs (and their improvement velocity) is a lot meaningful to me right now. I mean satellites are cool and all.
cdchn··on X (Twitter) blocks links to hacked JD Vance dossier
Except the indisputable public interest in having information about the person sitting on deck for the most powerful position in the world, as opposed to the prurient interests in seeing leaked nudes.
cdchn··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
Private space agency and LLMs both seem like big industries going nowhere driven by sci-fi hopes and dreams.
cdchn··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
>What matters is that they wanted the public (and likely, their talent) to _think_ that they weren't even interested in making a profit as this would be a philosophical threat to the notion of any sort of impartial or even hopefully benevolent originator of AGI (a goal which is laid plainly in their mission statement)

And now they want to cast off any pretense of that former altruistic yolk now that they have a new, better raison d'etre to attract talent: making absolutely unparalleled stacks of cash.

cdchn··on OpenAI in throes of executive exodus as three walk at once
And not right by virtue of $STOCK_GO_UP unless your entire premise is $STOCK_GO_UP.
cdchn··on Launch HN: Haystack (YC S24) – Visualize and edit code on an infinite canvas
It looks like a cool feature to an existing IDE but trying to sell it and forking VSCode as your own editor to try to sell seems like an uphill battle. Best of luck to you though.
cdchn··on Launch HN: Haystack (YC S24) – Visualize and edit code on an infinite canvas
I hope our code-editor-in-VR wouldn't involve flying around like hilarious depictions of "The Gibson" in bad sci-fi movies.

"Fixing our eyeballs is just an engineering problem."
cdchn··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
I wonder how the AI/copyright arguments will play out in court.

"If I read your book and I have a photographic memory and can recall any paragraph do I need to pay you a licensing fee?"

"If I go through your library and count all the times that 'the' is adjacent to 'end' do I need to get your permission to then tell that number to other people?"

cdchn··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
When you get to tell the ASI what to do, money has little value any more.
cdchn··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
>I would be surprised if OpenAI was a whole digit percentage of their revenue.

As opposed to? The euphemism "I wouldn't be surprised" usually means you think what you're saying. If you negate that you're saying what you _don't_ think is the case? I may be reading too much into whats probably a typo.

cdchn··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
I think OpenAI took this play right out of one of its founding donors playbooks. Pretend your company has lofty goals and you can get people to compromise to moral relativism and work superduper hard for you. These people definitely have framed posters with the “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea" quote somewhere in their living places/workspaces.
cdchn··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
"Humanity vs. OpenAI" would look good on a docket.
cdchn··on Caroline Ellison sentenced to 2 years in prison
It probably doesn't apply as much to white collar criminals but I wonder if she would be considered a snitch by her fellow inmates.
cdchn··on 45 years ago CompuServe connected the world before the World Wide Web
Blue Wave it was. There was another one I think it was QWKlink or something, too.

cdchn··on 45 years ago CompuServe connected the world before the World Wide Web
A lot of BBSes especially those that had FidoNet or similar distributed message boards let you download all the message boards as QWK packets and software like Blue Link and others. It was a great feature. Reading/replying to boards offline was a much nicer experience, in addition to the cost savings.

EDIT: and as another bit of random trivia the guy who invented QWK format died of a heart attack after being swatted by an 18 year old who was after his @Tennessee twitter username.

cdchn··on Bricked iPhone 16 Can Be Restored Wirelessly Using Another iPhone
I interpreted it to mean it must have a USB-C to charge, not that _if_ it has a port it must be USB-C. Then again I'm not an EU regulations lawyer so thats just my interpretation.
