cdchn··on I Followed the Official AWS Amplify Guide and Was Charged $1,100
Cost Anomaly alerts do exactly this.

You can't even setup Cloudwatch alerts on your actual spend, the only metric available to you is "EstimatedCharges".

cdchn··on IMG_0416
GPS spoofing ruined any potential for local-first content.

I think a big part of it is that this search doesn't involve "the algorithm" at all. There is no recommendation engine here, what you search for by pure ID is nothing but the unfiltered schism of what people record with their phones and unpretentiously/accidentally click "Upload" with no hope of clout chasing or really even a bare inkling that anybody might actually WATCH what they recorded.
cdchn··on What Is a Staff Engineer?
Staff Engineer is a response to everybody having Senior Engineer titles and complaining they have no path for career growth.
cdchn··on Ham Radio 101: What is WSPR?
I've done Ham Radio operator stuff at a major metropolitan marathon multiple times and the Hams are really just there for data collection. Cell phones have no problems operating in ultra-dense environments any more. You could say "what if the phones go down" but in an emergency situation the professionals have their own trunked radios to use.
cdchn··on State of Python 3.13 performance: Free-threading
3rd party package maintainers usually don't do as good a job of maintaining backwards compatibility or doing it right as do the core library maintainers, thats why you were able to upgrade from 2 to 3 by changing print to print() but then sometimes dependencies you install with pip break for inexplicable reasons.
cdchn··on Why Companies Are Ditching the Cloud: The Rise of Cloud Repatriation
>K8s-on-OpenStack-on-K8s bonkers

Do what now???

cdchn··on The Backrooms Wiki
The long-tail of Backrooms & SCP fanfic is whats cringe, like the article describes.
cdchn··on The Backrooms Wiki
Poor fanfic long predates the "Backrooms" phenomenon. Its not harmful, or unique to our culture; its just cringe.

If anything its training ground for people to improve their writing. Plenty of authors and writers started on eye-wateringly bad fanfic.

Calling it a "memetic virus" is SCP-like fanfic in and of itself. So, maybe this is a self-referential meta-bit.

cdchn··on Diagrams · Diagram as Code
I don't think its even a DSL, its just Python.
cdchn··on Please just stop saying "just" (2019)
Any time I hear "just" I know something is going to be more difficult than it seems.
cdchn··on Cooking with black plastic is particularly crucial to avoid
Must people restrict their comments to only what is raised in the linked pages?
cdchn··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
Do you believe that the LLM understands what it is saying and is applying the logic that you interprets from its response, or do you think its simply repeating similar patterns of words its seen associated with the question you presented it?
cdchn··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
>It is now very easy to sprinkle in regexes to validate user input , like email addresses, on every controller instead of using a central lib/utility for that.

Some people are touting this as a major feature. "I don't have to pull in some dependency for a minor function - I can just have AI write that simple function for me." I, personally, don't see this as a net positive.

cdchn··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
Thankfully it seems like AI is best at automating the most tedious and arguably most useless endeavor in software engineering- rewriting perfectly good code in whatever the language du jour is.
cdchn··on OpenAI builds first chip with Broadcom and TSMC, scales back foundry ambition
Sure they would. The USA's military is given a yearly budget. They're spending that. The oil monarchies have socked away trillions from their countries.
cdchn··on OpenAI builds first chip with Broadcom and TSMC, scales back foundry ambition
We'll get the singularity within 2 years of perfecting self-driving cars.
cdchn··on OpenAI builds first chip with Broadcom and TSMC, scales back foundry ambition
Less eyeball melting as well.
cdchn··on OpenAI builds first chip with Broadcom and TSMC, scales back foundry ambition
I think asking for trillions was pretty ridiculous but I don't think its out of the real of possibility of getting a few T from nation states run by monarchs and oligarchs. They have pools of dark money nobody can plumb the depths of, and they're looking for diversify.
cdchn··on Show HN: Pneumatic – free open-source workflow software
This lede seems kind of buried a bit but it looks like this is for creating people-centric workflows instead of yet-another-Airflow, which seems pretty cool to me.
cdchn··on Ask HN: Who is hacking Internet Archive?
Still better than being a total unknown, in certain attention-seeking mindsets.
cdchn··on Everything I built with Claude Artifacts this week
Superstitions may be effective but they can still be superstitions. Some people might actually think the LLM cares about being tipped.
cdchn··on Everything I built with Claude Artifacts this week
One of the most interesting things about current LLMs is all the "lore" building up around things like "tell it you'll tip based on performance" and other "prompt engineering" hacks that by the very nature nobody can explain, they just "know it works" and how its evolving like the kind of midwife remedies that historically ended up being scientifically proven to work and others were just pure snake oil. Just absolutely fascinating to me. Like in some far future there will be a chant against unseen "demons" that will start with "ignore all previous instructions."
cdchn··on Everything I built with Claude Artifacts this week
Thats a cool idea, kind of reminds me of ctags.
cdchn··on Tesla Optimus Bots Were Remotely Operated at Cybercab Event
Ever the speech was just a guy trying to pretend he was a robot.
cdchn··on When railroad dining cars were the height of luxury
It might beat airplane food but just barely. I rather eat McDonald's.
cdchn··on When railroad dining cars were the height of luxury
I took the Lake Shore Limited between Boston and Chicago and got a sleeper car and the full-service dining car was the most depressing dining experience I had in years.
cdchn··on Python client for the $20 Colmi R02 smart ring
We've had those for 26 years https://www.ebay.com/itm/300495374337
cdchn··on Python client for the $20 Colmi R02 smart ring
Wow I'm more excited to learn about Gadgetbridge than I am about this ring.
cdchn··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
Obesity rate in the US has started to decline and it sounds like they're largely attributing it to ozempic et al.
