ccoggins··on A year on, Ultrabooks are a worse disaster than most expected
Am I missing something about all this price talk? The first 17 results for ultrabooks on newegg are under 800(with a couple < 600$) and the first 40 or so are under the 1200 that the 13" Air starts at...

As an aside, Calibre does a pretty good job of converting epub and the like into the kindle format. It can also create the "Collections" on your kindle, which makes finding your books much easier on the kindle.
ccoggins··on Why Your McD's Burger Doesn't Look Like the One in the Ad
I would have to disagree. I don't think they ever make claims about the amount of space the burger takes up. They claim it's a 1/4 lb burger. How thick it is seems irrelevant as long as they started out with a 1/4 lb of meat.

Having previous military experience definitely helps get your foot in the door at all the military contractors as well. Often times when developing new features we don't have the benefit of really having a good idea of what the soldier wants. Putting myself in their shoes is tough to do without that experience and having an expert can really allow us to develop features that get used. Also, if you had or have held a security clearance that can carry some weight at the defense contractors as well.
ccoggins··on The Kindle Index
Agreed - I've been waiting for a built in light since the first time I saw a Kindle. Although making it this easy to read in bed probably means I'll get even less sleep :)
ccoggins··on I have 404,772 users. Now what?
Ah, I had no idea. I'm not a musician by any means. That makes sense though. I guess a venue probably isn't willing to actively recruit unproven acts.
ccoggins··on I have 404,772 users. Now what?
Going along with the idea of helping musicians find gigs, make the venues pay a membership fee to get connected with musicians. I would think venues more likely to be able to pay for a service over an aspiring musician. Also, I enjoy seeing such an honest response from someone in charge of a business :)
ccoggins··on New Nook has built in light and e-ink
I've been waiting for a reasonably priced e-reader with a built in light ever since I first saw a kindle. I remember thinking "Do I really want to pay a few hundred dollars for a gadget to have to clip a crappy light on the thing." Sony had made an e-reader with a built in light but IIRC it was even more expensive than the original kindle.
ccoggins··on E-reader wars: does the iPad's retina display measure up to e-ink?
Yep - I've got one as well. I like the way it works but I really notice the compromise on the extra size.
ccoggins··on E-reader wars: does the iPad's retina display measure up to e-ink?
No worries - I notice that I did not actually specify "e-ink kindle" in my statement above.
ccoggins··on E-reader wars: does the iPad's retina display measure up to e-ink?
I haven't tried reading on an iPad, but I have on my 10" Thrive. I agree that such a large screen makes it more difficult to read due to the amount of eye movement needed.
ccoggins··on E-reader wars: does the iPad's retina display measure up to e-ink?
Kindle Fire isn't e-ink. With my regular Kindle and the Amazon case with LED that uses the Kindle battery I still get a good 2 weeks between charges. The case is a mediocre compromise - it shuts the light off if the Kindle goes off which is nice, but it makes the Kindle quite a bit more unwieldy.
ccoggins··on E-reader wars: does the iPad's retina display measure up to e-ink?
I've never found the lcd vs e-ink to be much of an issue as far as eyestrain goes. I read several hundred books no problem on my old Palm IIIc which had, wait for it, 160px by 160px resolution. The e-ink is nice too though, but the need for an external light makes reading in bed a pain. I wish Amazon would just make a kindle with an LED built in(like the Sony PRS-700).

Sounds like a great idea. I'm in.
ccoggins··on Postmortem of a commercial failure: My first Android Game App
I really like this idea. I've downloaded plenty of apps that pop up a dialog asking you to review them. I've always found the pop up to be fairly pesky, but I think I would change my mind if it offered the better version for doing so.
ccoggins··on Self-contained, Internet-less Wikipedia machine.
I believe this. I bought one from 1saleaday for 15 shipped. Since then I've seen it on 1saleaday twice more. Another 15 and also one day for 9.99 with free shipping.
ccoggins··on The iPad Is Unbeatable
Agree. A quick search on Best Buy's site shows only 7 out of 47 android tablets are 499 or above. Granted, the Ipad2 just dropped to 399, but up until a week ago most of the android tablets were cheaper than the ipad.
ccoggins··on Why I Don't Do Unpaid Overtime and Neither Should You
This is not true at all. I work in the defense industry and their is certainly not any law requiring my company to pay me for overtime. I think what you are referring to is the fact that any hours worked on contracts must be billed to the government. Say a company receives 1000 hours to do a job and an employee works on the project 80 hours per week. At that rate, the government will only pay for 12.5 weeks of work(1000/80), not 25 weeks.

This prevents the problem you mention, but it still isn't good for the employee. It does create an incentive for the company to encourage their employees to work more. If they charge for 80 hours in one week, but only pay the employee for 40 the company just made a bunch of extra profit at the employee's expense.

ccoggins··on The Emerging Wisdom Revolution
Interesting article. Reminds me a lot of Cory Doctorow's "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom".
