>Lots of people seriously undervalue what homemakers do.

This is a very serious issue with America's current manifestation of capitalism. You have people who are ESSENTIAL to society, EMTs and the like, not even being paid what they would make at walmart or mcdonalds

To say nothing of teachers. I've been saying for years that becoming a US public school teacher is a massive mistake. Now the very same ignorant people who ran their teachers off by accusing them of teaching their kids to be gay or something like that, completely unironically, seem to be becoming only more relevant to the lives of normal people as time goes on. That's the sort of shit you should be afraid to say in public, it really doesn't matter if they actually believe it or even really know what they're saying.

they genuinely believe the shit they see on the TV or are told by Alcoholic bob down at the local 7-eleven parking lot. and now that can't figure out why nobody wants to go to school for 4+ years, likely taking on a substantial amount of debt, to make less than a mcdonalds cashier while dealing with massive political pressure from truly shockingly ignorant people (depending on the state)

I look back on what I remember seeing grown fucking adults say to/accuse teachers of, why would anybody who is genuinely educated ever, ever voluntarily choose to deal with that sort of (in some cases, quite literal) violent ignorance

Location: small rural town in eastern TN

Remote: I've almost exclusively worked remotely, not many tech jobs locally in rural Tennessee.

Willing to relocate: yes

Technologies: primarily python/Linux web development, accurately described by the label 'full stack'. Basically, everything involved involved in making a website/app/whatever available on the internet, I have experience in. I've worked primarily in flask, but recently had to familiarize myself with both Django and fastapi to complete technical-aptitude tests as part of the interview process with different companies.

cc-d··on Reddit shuts down subreddits including r/The_Donald and r/ChapoTrapHouse
I feel obligated to once again plug https://ieddit.com/about/ -transparent mod/admin logs, anonymous posting, etcetcetc, but I honestly think it's been demonstrated that it's next to impossible to sustain any amount of serious interest in such alternatives (there is certainly no shortage of reddit-like sites).

The direction reddit has taken is absolutely abhorrent, but at this point it's hard to avoid adopting a fatalistic outlook on things. What else can be done?

Anybody in the upper echelons of reddit who is responsible for the direction the site has taken over the past few years should be absolutely disgusted with themselves. Was the hundreds of millions (billions?) in VC funding not enough? You were given an extremely important position of stewardship over the internet, and have utterly betrayed all of us.

>If you find your resolution in the fact that you spent your time useful by learning, and when you reemerge and reintegrate yourself into society, you will have a chance to be better before, why restricting it?

The restriction of information is an intentional cruelty. Another tool which is utilized to punish the evil criminal (especially the nonviolent drug offenders).

The entire american "justice" system is founded upon the premises of punishment (you deserve to suffer for breaking the law), profit (13th amendment allowing prisoners to be used as literal slaves, the billion $ market created for 'prison service providers'), and political disenfranchisement (cant allow people who have been exposed to this utterly abhorrent system to exercise their right to vote, as that could be dangerous to the system).

Rehabilitation? That's simply not what the system is designed to achieve. The goal is profit, suffering, and political disenfranchisement.

cc-d··on After 10 years in tech isolation, I’m now outsider to things I once had mastered
>What's the idea behind convicted felons not being allowed to vote?

Disenfranchisement, and the 13th amendment. The "justice" system in the United States, especially enabled by laws surrounding drug prohibition (created for the purpose of suppressing Nixon's political opposition, hence why cannabis is schedule 1 federally), is the modern embodiment of the Jim Crow system that was supposedly abolished.

Prisoners are specifically exempted from the slavery protections provided by the 13th amendment. Allowing prisoners, who are being housed at the expense of the tax payer, to be forced to work for pennies as literal slaves, often for private corporations.

Despite marijuana use being equally prevalent among white and black populations, blacks are several times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession. Despite cocaine and crack being literally the same drug, the only difference being if it's in its hcl salt or freebase form, crack is prosecuted by a weight ratio of 18:1 compared to cocaine. Before the "fair sentencing act" was passed in 2010, this ratio was 100:1. Low level crack dealers caught with 10g were prosecuted the same as somebody caught with a kilo of coke, triggering mandatory minimums of decades for drug trafficking.

Can you guess why this prosecutional disparity existed (and still exists) between two different forms of the same drug?

Hint: it's the same reason why felons are politically disenfranchised.

The sub is chapotraphouse, based upon the podcast of the same name. I've never listened to the podcast, I tried once and within a few minutes found it obnoxious. As somebody interested in political theory/history/whatever label you want to apply to "the study of power structures", I often find the perspective of the sub interesting, and can usually be summed up as "21st century communists in America".

>Fentanyl is active in a range very similar to LSD, it's the biggest concern.

Not orally, the BA of actual fentanyl is abysmal orally (although some fentanyl analogs are definitely comparable). LSD is never contaminated with fentanyl to begin with. Some fentnayl analogs have been distributed in paper tab form by research chemical vendors, but LSD is never 'contaminated' with fentanyl. A test kit, or even just ingesting the tab slowly in pieces, eliminates this (non)risk entirely.

>25i-NBOMe is a drug similar in effect to LSD, but with a somewhat worse track record for safety

Thankfully this risk has decreased over the past few years, as real LSD is cheaper, and easier to find, than phenthylamine-based RCs being sold as LSD. You might encounter ALD-52, 1P-lSD, ETH-LAD, etc being sold as LSD, but these are just LSD analogs and have pretty much identical safety/effect profiles.

Also, swallowing the tabs make some of the more common RC LSD imitators completely inactive, whereas LSD will still be absorbed perfectly. At the end of the day, if you're concerned about this, you can buy a $10 test kit.

>Strychnine is also active in the LSD dose range. There was definitely some propaganda about strychnine-tainted LSD in the 70s, so it's hard to know if this has ever happened, or if it's just urban legend. But it's chemically plausible.

This doesn't happen. Also, no it is not chemically possible. The amount of strychine required to seriously hurt somebody would be extremely obvious on LSD tabs. Like it actually isn't even possible to fit enough strychine to seriously hurt somebody on a lsd tab in a discreet manner . The choice of strychine here as a poison shows that whoever originally spread this nonsense has zero understanding of chemistry.

>Fortunately, you don't have to just pray that your blotter doesn't have fentanyl in it.

Once again, this isn't a serious risk. It's extremely rare to find fentanyl in this form now anyway, as most research chemical vendors no longer stock fentanyl analogs. And, again, just consuming the tab slowly or testing it makes this a non-risk.

Also generally there is a very little overlap in dealers who sell both fentnanyl and lsd, these drugs attract very different crowds.

cc-d··on The Meaning of Life Is Absurd
>The heat death of universe is true based on current state of our understanding. Nothing says that it won't change in next million years - that's a monumentally long time in exponential rate of human progress. >We've been wrong about a lot of things in the past and if people had made up their mind about the meaning of life before Kepler, we would have thought that we are the center of the solar system. Therefore, we are the most important thing in the Universe.

If you were making the argument that the universal rate of expansion isn't necessarily static, I'd perhaps agree with you (there is evidence this functioned differently in the early universe). The 2nd law of thermodynamics on the other hand, which is what will lead to universal heat death, is extremely unlikely to be variable.

Without the 2nd law of thermodynamics, the universe would be so radically different that it would be effectively an entirely new universe at that point.

Anecdotally, during the years I effectively spent the entirety of my time playing competitive multiplayer games, I reached the top 0.1% level in 4 different games with player counts far above a million. 3 of those being entirely different genres many skills did not directly transfer between.

And you know what I learned? 1. 750+ hours of "practice" is always required and 2. The difference between top x.x% and #1 is astounding.

There are very few areas of skill in which putting in several thousand hours of consistent practice will not land you in the top 1% at least, assuming you have close to the average physical/mental aptitude of people who usually take up this skill.

But you will never be Magnus Carlsen. The skill difference between 0.01% and #1 is far greater than the skill difference between 50% and 1%.

cc-d··on Changing dynamics of the drug overdose epidemic in the US, 1979-2016
>That may be what the OP was thinking, but it's not the case. You can very much OD on regular Opium

Read above. Orally, it's a strong emetic. Unless a user takes vastly more than a normal dose for their body weight, they will vomit and be fine. Opium, when smoked, is even safer as users pass out well before overdose.

It is easier to overdose on acetaminophen, and many other things you can pick up over the counter at your local pharmacy.

> It is even easier to OD on its extracts (specifically morphine)

Yes, but this is why I am using the word opium, and not morphine.

> its synthetic analogues (fentanyl).

Fentanyl is not an analog of anything found in opium, it's an entirely different molecule with no relationship whatsoever to the traditional opiates.

cc-d··on Changing dynamics of the drug overdose epidemic in the US, 1979-2016
>Perhaps there is a difference between Opium overdose and Opioid overdose?

Opium has three primary constituents, morphine, codeine, thebaine. An opioid, roughly, is anything which agonizes opioid receptors, which are mu, delta, and kappa. mu-receptor agonists specifically are usually what people are referring to when they use the term 'opioid'.

Morphine, which is an opiate (an opioid, but one that is derived from opium), is what usually produces death during an opium overdose (it also happens to be alkaloid which produces most of the desirable effect).

You can look up morphine ld50 numbers to get an idea of how much morphine it would take to kill somebody. While morphine is the principal opioid at work in opium, it is still only a tiny % of the opium's total volume.

>When I think consuming opium, I conjure images of old chinese artwork where they are smoking it in a hookah type instrument.

It being smoked also makes it considerably safer. Users pass out before overdose.

>The Opioid overdoses are mostly Fentanyl and other extracts from opium.

Correct. Morphine is a somewhat strong opioid in its own right, but it doesn't even hold a candle to the more powerful opioids science has discovered. Not even close.

The strength of an opioid is often described in morphine equivalents, that is how much of x is comparable to the same amount of morphine.

Fentanyl is roughly 50x as powerful as morphine, which makes it a rather dangerous compound for untrained people to handle, especially to inject. That being said, as long as the dosages are measured correctly, fentanyl is not significantly more dangerous than any other commonly used opioid. It's the black market dynamics which make it particularly prone to kill users.

Fentanyl is also nowhere near the most powerful opioid being sold on the street either. The literature has opioids that are, roughly, several thousand times as powerful as morphine.

Meaning if it takes on average 1g of pure morphine to kill a human, less than a single mg of some of the stronger fentanyl analogs can be sufficient enough to kill. Much lower if injected.

This is what is killing everybody. Some fentanyl analogs are close to chemical weapons in terms of potency, and drug dealers with a 3rd grade equivalent education are handling it like they would cocaine or similar.

cc-d··on Changing dynamics of the drug overdose epidemic in the US, 1979-2016
Fatally overdosing on opium is more difficult than overdosing on acetaminophen, or many other OTC drugs you can pick up from your local pharmacy.

The alkaloids in opium are STRONG emetics. While it is certainly possible to fatally overdose, it is far more likely one would vomit for a few hours and be fine, assuming they did not consume far above a 'normal' amount for their bodyweight.

Which, by the way, is true of alcohol as well.

cc-d··on Changing dynamics of the drug overdose epidemic in the US, 1979-2016
Decriminalized yes, the question of legalization is more complicated.

When it comes to opioids, legalized alone opium would alleviate vast swathes of death and suffering. Many of the same arguments made for cannabis legalization also apply to opium. It's difficult to unintentionally overdose on, there are no serious long term health detriments aside from dependency and constipation (and testosterone decrease). The poppy has been cultivated by humans for as long as wheat has, it is only recently recently it became so demonized.

And most importantly, it would largely eliminate the demand for black market heroin/fentanyl. Opium is a combination of 3 alkaloids, morphine, codeine, thebaine. Heroin is just acetylated morphine which allows for more total morphine to cross the BBB, it's still morphine which produces most of the effect users desire.

And most importantly, it allows opioid users a strong, easy to access, cheap, legal alternative to being sick.

Even though there would still be some demand, black market suppliers could not compete price wise, so the black market would be eliminated very quickly. The DRAMATIC price reduction will also make the financial effects of opioid dependency much less devastating.
