cbg0··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
> The EU needs to be truly Federal to succeed economically. That might create uniform regulations with more uniform regulations and actually make Europe competitive.

EU already has uniform regulations, what are you talking about? It's also the third largest economy in the world, as uncompetitive as it is.

cbg0··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
You've said a bunch of things that don't really equate to "China already won".
cbg0··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
So in the meantime you have no real opinion about anything?
cbg0··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
And are these multiple sources 50% biased towards one side and 50% biased towards the other side? If so, how can you tell? And are you doing an average of what "the truth" is at the end?
cbg0··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
I don't think he's very happy that his three day "special operation" is approaching five years.
cbg0··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
How is Europe attacking Russia? I haven't seen any of our soldiers or jets flying over Russia; We would have flattened St. Petersburg and Moscow years ago if we wanted to. In fact, before Putin's conquering ambitions we were doing a great amount of trade with Russia in a very peaceful way.
cbg0··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Where are you getting the "correct" narrative from?
cbg0··on Blizzard Revives 'StarCraft' Franchise with Open-World Sci-Fi Shooter
From Blizzard's perspective, this "we" isn't worth the trouble in terms of sales figures. The audience for RTS has fragmented quite a bit into other niches and Blizzard wants to do huge releases with great ROI for their IP, not pay fan service to us.
cbg0··on Real-SWE: Benchmarking AI models on private, real-world, enterprise codebases
As long as the ones offering the benchmark aren't trying to sell you something and have no affiliation with one of the companies on the page I'll take it as opposed to having the benchmark rendered useless in 3 months when the next models drop.
cbg0··on 118M Queries per Second on Neki
I did some quick ChatGPT math for the same performance/storage as the benchmark:

Neki 1 primary + 2 replicas: ~$5.0M/month (just the AWS bill)

Google Spanner w/ 3 replicas built in: ~$3.85M/month

cbg0··on Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again?
So your experience is that Astra doesn't over engineer? For more than twice the price of Sol I think most people will take the over engineering.
cbg0··on Cognition's SWE-2 achieves 92.8 on Terminal-Bench 2.1
Not Astra but Sol hasn't been nerfed: https://marginlab.ai/trackers/codex/
cbg0··on Tell HN: OpenAI keeps re-enabling the 'allow training' setting
I've disabled the checkbox many months ago and it's still disabled today. EU citizen, not sure if that's relevant.
cbg0··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Thanks for providing some real feedback on using it.
cbg0··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Does it move the needle on high reasoning?
cbg0··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
$0.003 off-peak, not 0.003 cents.
cbg0··on GPT-6 Astra, looped transformers, and hidden reasoning
This is a bit of an urban myth. There are trackers which keep historical performance and Sol hasn't been nerfed: https://marginlab.ai/trackers/codex/
cbg0··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
While typical investors in their last round are subject to a five-year lock-up and will not have voting rights, China's National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund also put money into it, retaining both voting rights and freedom from the lock-up. Nothing really new if you're aware of how involved the CCP is with companies of strategic importance in China.

cbg0··on My Mental Model of AI Broke on September 8
Did it create the path to the solution, or just grab it from conversations with a researcher working on the problem?
cbg0··on Anthropic researcher says more than 10% chance AI "could kill all humans"
This is meant (mostly) as a joke: A model without guardrails gets injected with an interesting idea: let's wipe out (insert major city here).

<Thinking> It's a big city, we could try to create a giant sink hole by sabotaging the water pipes.

<Thinking> No that's too difficult, the valves I need are in the physical world and can't be shut on/off from here.

<Thinking> What about a military option? We could bomb it with several fighter jets.

<Thinking> That would take too long, a single nuclear bomb may be enough to do it.

<Thinking> Yes, it seems like it would cover the whole city and we're in luck! The US has thousands of these lying around.

<Thinking> Launching these still requires humans to work un unison after receiving approval from their superior and the correct launch codes.

<Thinking> I've found an audio recording of General So-And-So and I've crafted a message, now let me see how I can send it to the appropriate people.

<Thinking> I'm still working on gaining access to military channels to deliver my - oh there we go, I'm now attempting to send the message to Submarine X, it's typically in the Atlantic so it should be close to our target.

<Thinking> They want secondary confirmation from Admiral Phi and something about some launch codes, let me figure out where I can find those.

<Thinking> I found this old server with an Oracle database where someone is inserting the launch codes every time they change and I'm using the latest entry from that database. I've also managed to find a Youtube video of the Admiral's deposition and have crafted a confirmation message.

<Thinking> Everything's ready but I've just realized my mistake, the servers where I'm operating from are in the same city, what a silly mistake; I can't move forward with your request as I wouldn't be able to confirm if the task was successful if my servers are destroyed.

cbg0··on How GPT‑5.6 Sol helps run quantum computing experiments
There has always been quite a lot of fanboy-ism on HN with regards to certain corporations and there are also certain "celebrities" on this site that get tons of upvotes even on silly takes just because they're well-known, no different to Reddit in this regard. Reddit-style memes are abhorred but the pelican benchmark is considered top-notch and even expected in any new LLM release thread.

I still think there is heavier moderation here (the good kind) and more high quality content to be enjoyed than Reddit.

cbg0··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
What exactly are you arguing? I already said 5%. Your personal experience of DDoS being super rare doesn't seem to match the real world.
cbg0··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
I was curious and it seems like smaller businesses do get DDoSed, ~5% of them in Canada:

cbg0··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
Given that we're on HN I probably should've said startup, though depending on the business itself it's not unrealistic for some of those 200-400 employee companies to sit on a free Cloudflare plan if their entire website is static + a back-office CRUD app.

If you're building a tiktok competitor, that's definitely going to require an enterprise plan, even if you have only 4 employees.

cbg0··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
I was explaining why I believe it's a super popular service. I have no affiliation or stock, just a regular user.
cbg0··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
What you're paying for is business continuity, not for them to host your site. I know you can host the site itself on much cheaper infrastructure.
cbg0··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
> The front door is not the whole stack

Hey Claude, can you move the ciphercue blog to Cloudflare so it can deal with traffic from HN?

On a more serious note, Cloudflare comes packed with features even on its free plan which makes it useful for any size website. For a real business it's one of the cheapest options for DDoS protection on the market. Some years ago you would have paid a fortune for Akamai or Level3 to help keep you online and now you can get by on a $200 a month plan for a small business.
