cavilling_elite··on Amazon in talks with HP to buy Palm
Other tablets have no true purpose or useful content to consume. There is no thought put into the user experience of the Galaxy Tab or the like. They are simply "me too" devices and fall into the meme of "ipad killer". Where, as w33ble put it, the Fire is an Amazon Portal.

Apple and Amazon are in the same space but came from two different sides. And Apple is trying to cover the "harder" side, which is server and cloud computing. While Amazon had that down before diving into consumer HW.

I do think they are missing an opportunity without a camera. Think about the opportunity to scan bar codes or book covers and instantly see the Amazon price, and purchase right there. Imagine being in Barnes and Nobles and buying the book on your Fire.

Sneaky way to get your resume on HN. :)
cavilling_elite··on Hey, Bethesda Let’s settle this

Someone must have caught wind. No need for right click with Firebug. :)
cavilling_elite··on Ask HN: What are your side projects?
Thanks! I've been working on it for a few months now. I'm hoping to have an open alpha to a handful of people by the end of April.

Best of luck!

cavilling_elite··on Ask HN: What are your side projects?
My current side project is an online homebrewing beer log with recipe sharing. http://ibrewedit.com/
cavilling_elite··on Show HN: my weekend project, Gumroad
This looks like a really expensive way to get Rick Roll'd :)
cavilling_elite··on I'm a designer who learned Django and launched her first webapp in 6 weeks
The site looks amazing. I sent it to my gf who is just finishing up restoring a Kelsey Excelsior letterpress for this exact purpose.
cavilling_elite··on Django-bcrypt
I thought I remember a post a while back but:

What is the cost (time) of using bcrypt instead of the default?

cavilling_elite··on Allegations of FBI crypto backdoors in OpenBSD IPSEC
IF the allegations are true, I am on the side that says he misinterpreted the NDA. There could be reason to believe that the NDA had to do with his working with the FBI but the backdoor was a separate entity.

Either case, its all speculation. Hopefully this isn't a stunt to discredit oBSD. Some serious combing will be done in the code, I trust the oBSD team will do their best to clean up any mess that exists. We will all have a better oBSD after this.

cavilling_elite··on How I Screwed Up My Google Acquisition
This should also be a lesson about using engineering notebooks and other such legal documents in programming a new product, especially with new ideas such as the DOM manipulation indicated in this blog.
cavilling_elite··on Excellent analysis of Assange's Wikileaks motivations (from the horse's mouth)
The question I have (and I will start the linked pdf tonight) is if unjust systems are nonlinearly hit vs. just systems in the event of a leak. What happens if the new communication or propaganda tools start a copy cat organization to "leak" their own agenda.

It might work both ways: complete openness and complete falseness.

cavilling_elite··on Re-entry to US without backscatter or pat-down
I was under the impression that all of the "x-ray" scanners aren't x-rays. Instead they are high frequency (100GHz+) back scattering machines.

The ones in the MKE air port are L3 ProVisions which fit the description I was aware of (http://www.sds.l-3com.com/products/mmwave.htm). No ionizing radiation means no "x-rays" etc.

I haven't been subjected to them yet, but before I walked into the airport I made my decision if I was going to be scanned or not.

cavilling_elite··on Google's bottleneck is the internet
I don't know if this is what you were eluding to but maybe this is why mod_pagespeed was just released.

Making the "internet" faster would make google faster.

cavilling_elite··on Programming languages have to break free from the tyranny of ASCII
What is everyone's opinion of LabView. Clearly it was never designed as a server-side language, but it has a very not "linear" approach to designing.

I used to mock LabView (arguing speed and complexity), but now that I work with a colleague that exclusively uses it--we are a medical research engineering group--I really start to respect its utility.

So the question becomes: Would an opensource cross platform scripting language, modeled after LabView, fit this bill?

cavilling_elite··on Facebook Acquires Drop.io
My first thought was to take Drop.io and create a Google wave out of it. Now that Rasmussen has defected to Facebook, this may be true(http://techcrunch.com/2010/10/29/rasmussen-facebook-google/)
