cauldron··on Canada Battery Maker Says Flow Storage Costs to Tumble by Half

cauldron··on A $1.2B law to boost US quantum tech
That satelite is a huge waste of money, very little scientific value, a vanity project.
cauldron··on Number of babies born in Japan is the lowest since records began
Life in Japan seems the most depressing type, harsh weather and earthquake don't help either.
cauldron··on Chinese battery expert is charged with stealing trade secrets from US employer
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousand_Talents_Program_(Chin...

There are also local level derivatives.

That guy who edited babies no long ago is one of it, apparently he raked in hundreds of millions of both government and private investment, claiming he invented an industry-leading gene sequencing machine that in fact is a failed US product he bought from his professor.

Also, Huawei in their early ages stole one of Cisco router's source code and priced out Cisco with an exact same product compatible with Cisco systems, one Chinese academic invovled in modifying admitted it in an article. One of the role model stories.

cauldron··on The day I found Saowen.com had stolen my content
Is this whataboutism?

Funny I've been using Youtube for years, the only pirated content I've encountered were a few TV documenties and some unwacthable movies, and they seem to be deleted often.

Never saw Youtube promote and recommend any pirated content to me, unlike Bilibili.

Bilibili's front page is almost normal and all good, their shady stuff seems buried deep, my ipad is full of pirated Youtube videos with hundreds of thousands of views.

cauldron··on The day I found Saowen.com had stolen my content
Copying and plagiarism is so prevalent and pervasive that these "self-media" platforms have to introduce an "original" tag.

They will copy your content and edit it as the due process anyway, so add whatever you like and it won't deter them.

Change some words and the paragraph order, add funny pics and snippets, alter key parts to make it much more explosive and eyecatching, voila. They even offer part-time on-line jobs for this reprocessing.

cauldron··on The day I found Saowen.com had stolen my content
These Chinese aggregators are all the same, just like Toutiao from Bytedance (that TikTok company), not long ago the world's most valuable startup.

Together with Tencent's WeChat and other me-too sites they created the "self-media" cottage industry, basically lend credibility and let laymen publish all sorts of lowbrow and sensationalistic content to earn ad money.

If you check https://www.bilibili.com/, a very popular Chinese video site (I'd say also a stomping ground for anime pedophiles which the site was built upon. US listed btw.), you can find pirated US tv shows and basicially every popular yutube video, reprocessed, edited and watermarked as their "original" content, raking in money for their uploaders. Toutiao again is just the same model.

Part of the reason why Bytedance is so valuable, is Chinese just love these things, their de facto "news" source, the vast majority of people didn't receive higher edcation and doesn't want to read serious articles (which Chinese state-controlled media also lack).

Nobody care if it's original, they just want entertaining, explosive and easy-to-consume content.

cauldron··on Indian technology talent is flocking to Canada
From my understanding, jobs in Canada are scarce, at least for new immigrants, it seems most of them can only start off of menial jobs.

Since Canada is relatively easy to immigrate to, newcomers have to stay within the country to compete for scarce and low pay jobs, while citizens of Canada can pursue high salaries abroad.

cauldron··on A Chinese electric car is coming to the US
Oh honey, "fake product reviews" is mutiple times more rampant in China, there's an entire industry.
cauldron··on A Chinese electric car is coming to the US
When the vast majority of people are on bicycles and don't own a car, Santana is considered a symbol of social status.
cauldron··on A Chinese electric car is coming to the US
Don't know why I'm downvoted, Chinese car joint ventures has been ran for a decade but still Chinese can't design a decent car.

EVs just dramatically lowered the barriers to entry, it's just "a car with a motor and battery", will people notice and even care the difference in 0–100 km/h time between in-house design and generic parts cobbled together?

cauldron··on A Chinese electric car is coming to the US
And I guess not long from now, you'd be able to buy from Aliexpress EVs made out of Chinese back yards.
cauldron··on A Chinese electric car is coming to the US
Another PR campain, then the company can brag about "Even Americans buy our cars, what are you worrying about?"

"Sold overseas" is like an honor badge, Chinese really buy it.

US media really should stop this aggressive fearmongering.

cauldron··on Vine Co-Founder Colin Kroll Dies
I have the impression that America has had an obsessive history with drugs, but still think legal weed is a downhill path, but guess you guys would just say I'm bigoted, weed is non-addictive,or the key is self-control etc.
cauldron··on Vine Co-Founder Colin Kroll Dies
>did not have a drug problem, although he was aware that his son took drugs recreationally.

"recreationally", good luck with recreational weed, Americans.

cauldron··on A Millennial’s Tiny Satellites Are Helping China Advance in the Space Race
Western media reports tend to grossly exaggerate Chinese tech advances especially startups, those guys never shy away from any PR opportunity even if the only thing they have is a PPT in order to rake in juicy VC and government money. Don't believe what they are saying, let them show the thing.

In this article, the author seems to have mistaken Spacety with another startup LaserFleet when it comes to "offering to provide Wi-Fi service on airplanes", the latter explicitly cliams in their job listings to "have government backing", when a Chinese company says that, you set expectations low, coz they don't aim to be financially viable and usually don't have real advanced technology, maybe not even serious, let alone their grand plans.

The main subject "Spacety", all they did so far is building some concept-proof and experimental cubesats (which seems to be their real and only business model), offers 2 types of cubesat platform to do "space experiments", again, at 100K RMB price point, sounds just like yet another company caters to government policies.

Private space industry is a hot topic right now, with Spacex succeeding, former doubters(which abouds on Chinese Quora) are forced to come up with face-saving me-too policies and projects, personally I doubt any of the existing space startups in China is viable, partly because state enterprise's inherent desire and ability to eliminate competition.

Remember that Chinese guy who cliamed to actually build Nicaragua canal? His company is under stock suspension for 2 years now and no signs of resuming any time soon, that's after a daring news report questioning their glorious Cambodia telecom operation which the company claimed to have a whopping 60%+ net profit ratio and accouts for 90%+ of their revenue. Unsurprisingly, they too claim they have government backing and military ties and is "for the party and country".

cauldron··on Marriott Data Breach Traced to Chinese Hackers, US Readies Crackdown on Beijing
I admit my historical views are (or was?) extremely skewed, flawed and uninformed, I'm never proud of that, but I will never hate myself for it too since those are what Chinese textbooks and society taught me since I'm born.

I do regret that I came to realize it a bit late in my life tho, but that's what life is right?

cauldron··on Marriott Data Breach Traced to Chinese Hackers, US Readies Crackdown on Beijing
Oh boy I'm sure you are a western sympathizer of China, and I am almost ashamed of myself for not being nearly as defensive.

Japan and said nieghbors has been at war with the middle kindom for millennia, East Asians will be hating each other for another millennium, but does this justify China's never-ending hate towards the entire world? More specifically anyone else who's not a communist country or ally?

And the vast amount of people Japan so ruthlessly and nefariously massacred in China is only a fraction of what communism scored?

Not to mention the CCP just loves to ride this hatred, they are "the only savior and protector" of Chinese afterall.

cauldron··on Marriott Data Breach Traced to Chinese Hackers, US Readies Crackdown on Beijing
It's 2018, no one bothered China except Japan and their communist neighbors for almost an entire century now.

Time to move on and quit being a victim?

cauldron··on Why Not to Use Quora
The Chinese copy of it "Zhihu(Did you know?)" has become a distribution center of misinformation and misconception, a haven for "folk-science", all driven by financial gains, why would "clever ones" waste time on the internet if they can't make a buck out of it afterall, and if it's not a pragmatism populist hangout, how can they make their most valuable eyeballs keep coming back.

But the sin of it is it makes you think your are "clever" too, and both the website and the answerers are willingly fabricating, promoting and propagating deleterious garbage.

cauldron··on Yangtze River Port and Logistics: On-The-Ground Research Shows Assets Fabricated
On popular Chinese video sites, you can watch the pirated China Hustle, and the comments section is unsurprisingly almost all about blaming the Americans' stupidity.

American systems are just full of loopholes for Chinese, and Chinese will exploit every one of it for gains, and it's seen as deserved and normal in China, cos they are not taking from you, it's from "the system/pubilc/country", so it's non of your business and not yours to judge, if your are jealous then take it yourself if you are abled too.

Or 洋人 、 洋大人

I think there's an important aspect of China is that the gov just has so many tools to sway the economy, and status quo will always be tolerated and supported as long as there are enough people are benefitting from it.

People has been worrying about the housing bouble for a decade now, but in China, the gov owns all city land, can dictate land price and supply, control condo price,it's like the perfect tool, it keeps enough people happy since the price is always rising at major cities, it keeps people loyal cause your fortune are on it, and it absords most of the money non-stop printed to prop up the Chinese economy.
