catoc··on How to make a sliding, self-locking, and predator-proof chicken coop door (2020)
Such a great personal project!

These kind of things is what the ‘www’ was created for - good vibes!

Why riddle it with ads?

catoc··on ChatGPT won't let you type until Cloudflare reads your React state
I know, always hard to tell on HN. Added the relevant declarative tag
catoc··on ChatGPT won't let you type until Cloudflare reads your React state
> Are you sure it's a DDoS and not just a DoS?

I think these days it’s ‘DAIS’, as in your site just DAIS - from Distributed/Damned AI Scraping

catoc··on ChatGPT won't let you type until Cloudflare reads your React state
It’s only bad if you’re a closed, for-profit entity

</sarcasm>

catoc··on New York City hospitals drop Palantir as controversial AI firm expands in UK
You’re calling people who critique Palantir “borderline Q-Anon” ?

While you yourself think Palantir’s products are “like Excel” ?

They are not. Source: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2026/mar/26/ai-got-the-blam...

catoc··on Fontcrafter: Turn Your Handwriting into a Real Font
I don’t see the downside here.

If you don’t believe it, maybe disconnect from network before dropping the file?

catoc··on AI and the Ship of Theseus
They’re looking for AI that’s só good it’s unreal
catoc··on I'm reluctant to verify my identity or age for any online services
” it’s not a big deal. Just gets you better ads.”

I thought this was just ignorance.

Then I checked the profile. They ”have lots of experience with digital advertising “

catoc··on iPhone 17e
Just disable Liquid Glass (transparency, motion). Better UX and better UI
catoc··on Why Objective-C
That was exactly my point.

GP mentioned ‘chasing null pointer exceptions’, then parent mentioned that the language ’now does have nonnull annotation’, prompting me to explain that that does not prevent null pointer exceptions.

So, not living a dangerously. All that can be held against me is being “dangerously” imprecise on HN - definitely not good either

catoc··on Why Objective-C
It is a really pleasant language, but I think the <nonnull> annotation is for initialization only - compiler checking against initializing an object ptr with a null value - and does not prevent crashing when addressing an already released object
catoc··on Tuna: A new, modern, modal launcher for macOS
Isn’t your own username also associated with animal parts?
catoc··on Nearby Glasses
Would renaming to ”Nearby Glassholes” be acceptable as a PR?
catoc··on Nearby Glasses
“When using the app you are likely to experience false positives, and when the app alerts you, smart glasses are probably nearby.”

Nothing contradictory there.

Even “…when the app alerts you, smart glasses are likely nearby” might be reasonable.

catoc··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
It’s the same as scanning for CSAM, or encryption-backdoors “to catch criminals”.

Of course we hate child abuse.

Of course we hate criminals.

Of course we hate social media addicting our kids.

But they’re just used as emotional framing for the true underlying desire: government surveillance.

(For the record: I am not into conspiracy theories; the EU has seen proposals for - imho technically impossible - “legally-breakable encryption” alone in 2020, 2022, and 2025; now we”ll also see repeated attempts at the “age verification” thing to force all adults to upload their IDs to ‘secure’ web portals)

catoc··on Tesla Sales Down 55% UK, 58% Spain, 59% Germany, 81% Netherlands, 93% Norway
Not a meme? Or not a trillion dollars?
catoc··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
Yes, and most of us won’t break into other people’s houses, yet we really need locks.
catoc··on I’m joining OpenAI
He’s not “highly delusional”

He literally said he doesn’t give a fuck about money and ”I will get the fuck out of there [openai] if I don’t like it“ [source friedman interview]

This guy is very smart, and very persistent. I really don’t get all the negativity about the acquisition and especially not about him.

catoc··on Two different tricks for fast LLM inference
Your comment may be helpful - but would be much more helpful if you shared how it does work.

Edit: I see you’ re doing this further down; #thumbs up

catoc··on ai;dr
> ”AI never uses em dashes in a pair”

I wish that were true, but I feel a little bit vindicated nevertheless

catoc··on ai;dr
Exactly this! I love(d) using em dashes. Now they’ve become ehm dashes, experiencing exactly that pause — that moment of hesitation — that you describe
catoc··on The Singularity will occur on a Tuesday
> ”when they don’t even understand that the computer is the box attached to the monitor, not the monitor itself”

Laughed out loud at that - and cried a little.

I have had trouble explaining people: “No! don’t use your email password! This is not your email you are logging in to, your email address is a username for this other service. Don’t give them your email password!”

catoc··on Opus 4.6 uncovers 500 zero-day flaws in open-source code
A security researcher claiming that they’re not skeptical about LLMs being able to do part of their job - where is the financial stake in that?
catoc··on Opus 4.6 uncovers 500 zero-day flaws in open-source code
It does if the person making the statement has a track record, proven expertise on the topic - and in this case… it actually may mean something to other people
catoc··on Data centers in space makes no sense
“just an engineering problem”

Sounds a bit like that Dilbert where the marketing guy has sold a new invisible computer and is telling the engineers to now do their job and actually make it.

catoc··on Data centers in space makes no sense
Yes but in this case the lack-of-a-thing keeps GPUs hot
catoc··on Data centers in space makes no sense
Exactly - satellites need to be cooled to prevent overheating that wouldn’t happen on earth.

(Space doesn’t help in cooling GPUs in a satellite - space makes cooling worse)

catoc··on They lied to you. Building software is hard
I understand the “8 year old niece” is hyperbole, but really? Everyone can build apps?

“Build me a recipe app”, sure.

Building anything substantial has consistently failed for me unless you take claude or codex by the hand and guide them through it step by step.
