catmanjan··on Senior Google exec opposes remote work, moves to New Zealand to work remotely
How does it invite corruption if it's a legitimate government sponsored pathway? I'm sure NZers are happy to get a piece of rich migrants wealth vs. their money staying in offshore havens
catmanjan··on Open Source Farming Robot
What if you had a robot gantry that could attach itself to existing centre pivot systems to do seeding and tillage?
catmanjan··on Brave Search beta
Would you then say it's disengenous to listen to the tv or radio while browsing the internet with an ad blocker?
catmanjan··on Blizzard has lost almost 29% of its overall active playerbase in three years
Yep another thing is that gaming is a zero sum game - blizzard would be competing with itself for player base
catmanjan··on Labor shortage or terrible jobs?
Sort of, it's well known that you're unlikely to get a job at McDonald's as an adult
catmanjan··on Internal Combustion Engine
Washing machines and other appliances used to be powered by ICE when the grid was not widespread
catmanjan··on Jeff Bezos comes out in support of increased corporate taxes
I guess that's why people won't work harder to earn higher wages to avoid additional tax, wait, they do!
catmanjan··on Amazon illegally fired activist workers, Labor Board finds
Best to call it like it is - the government wants people to be informed that they are sacrificing rights as part of this agreement so the quid pro quo of higher wages is always in their mind (this is the main driver of the policy, higher wages)
catmanjan··on Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up
Whats the speed limit? In Australia there are a lot of 60kmh roads near parks
catmanjan··on Closing web browser windows doesn't close connections
I noticed this just yesterday, Azure Appgateway reported 6 active connections even though I was the only one using it and I had closed my browser.
catmanjan··on Speeding up SQL queries by orders of magnitude using UNION
Search results were boosted based on usage, but the performance benefits of infinite scroll outweighed the use case
catmanjan··on Speeding up SQL queries by orders of magnitude using UNION
Document registry, but I've heard users doing this in just about every application that allows it - just doing a broad search and memorising the page that the thing they actually want is on
catmanjan··on Speeding up SQL queries by orders of magnitude using UNION
Haha no comment
catmanjan··on Speeding up SQL queries by orders of magnitude using UNION
Yes - very true, however when we used paging we found users were going "I know my results are on page 19, skip to there" but when they were faced with the task of scrolling to page 19, their behaviour changed and they used filtering
catmanjan··on Speeding up SQL queries by orders of magnitude using UNION
In my experience this is the number one driver for infinite scroll, dropping paging simplifies a lot
catmanjan··on Interview with CEO of rsync.net: “no firewalls and no routers”
That's why your security solution should include a mix of every known technology, hackers need to know everything from COBOL to rust
catmanjan··on The Difficulties of SAML Single Logout
Ah thanks, I thought he meant they were all being used as identity providers - this makes more sense
catmanjan··on The Difficulties of SAML Single Logout
The previous post said "the enterprise" which makes me think of a singular organisation using all of them - maybe I'm misunderstanding, but why would a single org use more than one?
catmanjan··on Wikipedia Is Finally Asking Big Tech to Pay Up
So update it?
catmanjan··on The Difficulties of SAML Single Logout
Probably a dumb question, everything in my sphere is active directory - why would you have more than one identity provider?
catmanjan··on Goodbye MongoDB, Hello PostgreSQL (2015)
Graph databases are a type of NoSQL database,
catmanjan··on One Year Alone in Forest of Sweden Building a Log Cabin
I said value needs to be traced to an essential need, this covers most industries pretty well - but there seems to be a lot of tech that is more than 5 times removed from an essential
catmanjan··on One Year Alone in Forest of Sweden Building a Log Cabin
There is always the age old pension scheme of having a child to make up the difference
catmanjan··on One Year Alone in Forest of Sweden Building a Log Cabin
I think the value needs to be traced to an essential need, only those functions resulting in food, water, shelter count as intrinsic value - by this definition tech CEO's contribute less than an average farmer
catmanjan··on One Year Alone in Forest of Sweden Building a Log Cabin
How are you measuring wealth? Global debt is nearly 4 times global GDP
catmanjan··on Cisco Webex launches real-time translation
I sigh with relief when I see retro installers like that - at least you know it will work!
catmanjan··on Goodbye MongoDB, Hello PostgreSQL (2015)
Search engines
catmanjan··on YouTuber Builds Working 3D-Printed Turbojet Engine and Tests It in His Attic
I think it's the latter, other than powering a plane what else are they good for?
catmanjan··on Godot maintainer removes controversial satirical piece from documentation
As someone born in the 90s, looking back at the "rage against the machine" culture in software seems very fake for an industry that went from academia to an extension of the financial services sector...
catmanjan··on Flutter 2
There have been posts like this in the lifetime of various killed Google products - it would be nice if they would openly admit how many years of funding they've committed
