catmanjan··on Tech Jobs Lead to the Middle Class, But Not for the Masses
Thats a funny way to look at it - if anything a sysadmin is more of a line worker (I do both dev and sysadmin so I'm not particularly invested in either), with enough software you could be replaced by BA's coming up with architecture requirements and a system like docker...

Just a perspective thing I wonder

catmanjan··on In Australia, Coal Remains King
I wouldn't say there is a disinterest in kangaroos as food, it is a difficult thing to scale though - 8ft+ fences, on farm slaughtering/butchering because you can't really transport them alive

Maybe if we started selectively breeding them they would be farmable in a few hundred years?

I think the implication is that if that is what is going to happen, then that is capitalism solving the ethical problem for them - the government isn't running the mines and the companies will stop once they are no longer profitable.
catmanjan··on We made $1,052,000 in 2018 selling UI Tools. Here is what we learned
Time is money, sometimes the cost to purchase somethings COTS is a no brainer (especially if it offers support!).

Bootstrap has the other advantage of being pretty well designed so if your template isn't quite right they are easy to change, something which I've found to be rare with other COTS solutions.

catmanjan··on Facebook are 'morally bankrupt liars' says New Zealand's privacy commissioner
If you don't care about user experience and cost it's a pretty simple problem to solve - everything vetted before it gets posted
catmanjan··on Red Flags in Software Developer Job Descriptions
Yep you're right as much as I wish it wasn't the case, if two candidates were identical except one had skills in cutting edge technology and the other had skills in older tech I would pick the newer

May just be the business we're in but I feel going with the old limits your breadth (but maybe with a higher price tag? COBOL?)

catmanjan··on WasmWinforms – .NET WinForms in a browser
Does anyone have an example/list of popular applications that use .NET WinForms? The only ones I can think of are bespoke...

catmanjan··on SpaceX to lay off 10% of Workforce

What if someone changes the line? You lose the useful commit message
catmanjan··on Google starts throwing cash at Google Assistant startups
Because customers aren't satisfied with pretty decent when it comes to speech to text, if it isn't state of the art there's someone just around the corner doing it better....
catmanjan··on Dejavu – Web UI for Elasticsearch
Not really, depends on the size of the dataset and the complexity of the operations - when did you use it? Sounds like you were on a dodgy build or set up

I think Elastisearches policy on sizing is pay us or a partner to have a look and give you a guesstimate, which is pretty standard

catmanjan··on Developer Skills Report
There are lots of secrets you can pick up watching videos. Books glaze over some details like IDE choices and how to set up dev environments, but you get to see all that watching someone code from scratch
catmanjan··on Branchless Doom
I think it only registers input every 5 or so frames anyway :O
catmanjan··on The screen that set off the ballistic missile alert on Saturday

catmanjan··on Truth from Zero?
I believe the creator of the loop loses the match in this case for slow play.
catmanjan··on World's Largest Water Diversion Plan Won't Quench China's Thirst
I'm in NSW and I can guarantee you that if the upstream farms were more efficient with their water they would use the same amount, but grow more...

It's a bit like the mining industry, government doesn't want to even risk damaging the top 2 industries this country has.

catmanjan··on How do I permanently delete my account?
They could be explicit about exactly what they do with the data - that way there is some PR risk to them if they get caught out "recycle binning" data.
catmanjan··on Ask HN: What tech stack is in demand, and why?
I agree, I'd say anything that solves a companies problem of "we need this fixed yesterday" is in demand - no one is really at that stage with Tensorflow (yet?)
catmanjan··on Lessons learned from implementing a text editor related to front-end development
>not update until input or app state changes

That's the hard part that callbacks try to make easier.

catmanjan··on Inside continues to bet on email, the “largest social network”
Worked on my first HTML email template, was a real blast to the past... Tables for layout and inline CSS on every leaf node is recommended...
catmanjan··on 'Environmental Nightmare' After Thousands of Atlantic Salmon Escape Fish Farm
Why is that? Australia did (or still does?) have monetary incentives to have more children, completely backwards...
catmanjan··on Official support for .NET
As above, but also the out of the box HTTP client in C# is quite limited.
catmanjan··on Dijkstra was right – recursion should not be difficult
Quickbasic was great, fond memories of typing out hundreds of DATA statements for game sprites.
catmanjan··on Ask HN: Have you regretted making something open-source?
Those companies don't rely on international IP laws so much as laws inside China. When you start seeing Chinese companies actually competing via tenders that's when they'll start caring.
catmanjan··on Drip Irrigation Design Guidelines
I used to have the first one, it was garbage - didn't even last an Australian summer, I think it overheated.
