catboybotnet··on MilkyTracker 1.04
Ah, MilkyTracker! I loved using this guy all the time before eventually moving to Renoise. Still go back sometimes. Maybe now's one of those times!
catboybotnet··on Arpchat – Text your friends on the same network using just ARP
Haha, this is amazing. Going to see if I'll get caught using this later today. :)
catboybotnet··on UPS driver pay and benefits deal in US to be worth $170k a year, firm says
Is that min. wage workers working at the min. wage, or workers within the min. wage zone?

Fed. min. wage means jack all when states have their own, which is what we should be looking at.

catboybotnet··on WeWork Warns of Possible Bankruptcy
They're not bankrupt yet? I thought the pandemic basically killed the business.
catboybotnet··on She invited four people over for lunch. A week later, three were dead
Just because you're telling the truth doesn't mean that they'll present it to the court in a way that makes it seem like the truth. If they want to convict you, witnesses will show up pinning you to the crime. That, or they'll use "interrogation" tactics to get you to "confess" when you're innocent. It's mindgames to close the case early. The U.S. has a worrying amount of wrongful convictions, for many reasons.

To sum it up: never speak to police without a lawyer.

catboybotnet··on Baldur's Gate 3
I didn't even realize it had released! Feels like just a week ago I took a peek and we were still set for early access for another few months.

Guess crunch will do that to you...

catboybotnet··on Scientists of Chinese descent leaving the US at an accelerating pace
Anecdotal, so take it with a grain of salt: but similar things have been and are happening with scientists from other countries.

From the family grapevine, I've heard that other Ukranians, Russians, and others from former Soviet states at places like Fermilab with impressive degrees are leaving the country after 25+ years. Some of them have left because they could never really get a foothold in the country, and others because they feel they are just tired of it after so long. Compared to how things were after the collapse of the Union, it has improved, it's more tempting to go back now than to stay. QoL has never been as good as it is now, unless of course you're a military aged male))

Nobody feels the dream anymore.

catboybotnet··on The Windows desktop is dying
Time is a flat circle; instead of thin clients, it'll be chromebooks and chromeboxes.
catboybotnet··on Hackers manage to unlock Tesla software-locked features
It seems the thought that Teslas are not cars, but rather tablets with wheels is accurate.
catboybotnet··on Many people in finance, sales and management feel their jobs are pointless
Arggh, can't believe I forgot this wonderful line. :)
catboybotnet··on Many people in finance, sales and management feel their jobs are pointless
When all you have done is make daily meetings to justify your job so that your boss doesn't up and fire you: yes, you have a very pointless job.

I've also noticed sales are there to bullshit their way to getting somebody who isn't sure to buy something you're selling. Talk to an engineer, they'll tell you a paperclip holds paper. Talk to sales, you'll be on the line for an hour while he explains the majesty of the holy invention of paperclips, and why Paperclip Co.'s are the best. People who need paperclips will just buy them, bypassing the time sink.

catboybotnet··on Ask HN: Why is LK-99 public?
>Where did the energy go then?

Through the circuit. Heat is energy loss.

The heat comes from the resistance. No resistance, no heat. To be more specific, the heat is from the kinetic energy of electrons bumping into the conductive material; no collision no heat.

catboybotnet··on AWS: IPv4 addresses cost too much, so you’re going to pay
Ho? So this is why they bought our /16... We had downgraded to a /18 following that, but still have the same old v6 space.

There is no reason to not use v6, and excuses don't count. RFC2460 has been out since 1999 and most everything even defaults to v6 for localhost. Set up AAAA records and never think about it again...

catboybotnet··on US rejects Australia’s calls to end pursuit of WikiLeaks
Yes, from my memory of when a popular fantasy writer was in the mainstream discourse for a while, anybody that even said something remotely negative to her and advertised their location as in the U.K. immediately shut up and apologised after likely receiving legal threats. No anti-SLAPP regulation, either.

I believe it's because they can sue for damages related to the tarnishing of their image, though that may just be universal.

catboybotnet··on US rejects Australia’s calls to end pursuit of WikiLeaks
Many such cases!
catboybotnet··on GNU Boot sent a cease and desist to Libreboot
Functional code is better than non-functional code. What good is libreboot if you can't use it? You're more than welcome to use the now-maintained notgnuboot.vimuser.org or libreboot censored if you hate binary blobs, and are also more than welcome to try to find hardware that doesn't have closed source blobs built in.

I love free software, and will never stop, but "Libre" is only great in a vacuum.

catboybotnet··on US rejects Australia’s calls to end pursuit of WikiLeaks
To nobody's surprise: the U.S. does not actually have any protection for journalism, no protections for whistleblowers; if you embarrass them (worse in the case of WikiLeaks, being time and time again) they will get back at you to save any face. There is no reason to still go after Assange other than to make an example out of him.
catboybotnet··on Git Repo: Anime-Girls-Holding-Programming-Books
Aye, a basement dwelling nerd is a basement dwelling nerd regardless of where they are located on the planet, and are looked upon the same way. Otaku are no exception.
catboybotnet··on Quad9 blocks pirate site globally after Sony demanded €10k fine
Sony is a company, a corporation, a conglomerate, a machine to generate wealth for shareholders, whatever you wanna call it. Not a human. Decisions humans make on behalf of the company still lead to company != human.
catboybotnet··on Caffeine Half-Life Calculator
+1

There are plenty of studies showing X is good for your health (in moderation, of course!), usually all funded by companies selling X.

Got milk?

catboybotnet··on Arc Browser 1.0
Yes, there's a Windows waitlist, and possibly Linux far, far down the line?

Not sure how interested I am in a browser where I need to sign in to use. An insane decision, imo.

catboybotnet··on OpenAI shuts down its AI Classifier due to poor accuracy
There's also the post going around about how it can (and does) falsely flag human posts as AI output, particularly among some autistic people. About as useful as a polygraph, no?
catboybotnet··on Sugary drinks tax could prevent decay and increase health equity: study
It was a time, to be sure. I remember hearing the ads in favor of the tax (something like a grandmother worrying about her grandchildren drinking too many sodie pops), and as soon as they came they disappeared.
catboybotnet··on Apple says it'll remove iMessage and FaceTime in UK rather than break encryption
Capital. Once you grow to a certain point, politics and ideas are only good for marketing. Companies will happily work with banana republics and dictators if it outweighs the losses from paying your PR team a little more for a few months. Companies are not your friend, as in the end they only care about your money.
catboybotnet··on New laws trying to criminalize filming cops
From a quick google search, the number is roughly 660300. Divide 100 by that, you get .00015. A fraction of a fraction. 301 died to Covid in 2021. Hell, according to [0], the deaths to gunfire were only 61. 58 died to traffic related causes. Nearly five times as many cops died to Covid than gunshots!

Another question would be, of those 61 deaths to gun violence, how many were because somebody was further instigated into a shootout BECAUSE of the confrontations with police? What about friendly fire?

If police are quick to resort to violence, why should the people not be?

catboybotnet··on Unshackle: A tool to bypass Windows and Linux password logins
Neat, but replacing Utilman.exe with cmd.exe using most Linux ISOs is easy, and I've already got the drives needed. The amount of customers that get locked out of their servers...
catboybotnet··on Windows 11 collects an awful lot of telemetry about your PC
they are not wrong, though. from my time in the US, unless you're lucky and decide to stay in a city with half-decent public transport, you NEED a car to get around. No busses, no trains, no trams, only ever-expanding highways and stroads.

these companies spent a whole century destroying public transport to sell more cars. they spend that century spreading propaganda about cars, bribing politicians (or lobbying as you like to call it), and completely redoing the entire infrastructure of a major world power for... more money. you cannot blame the people being exploited for having to buy into a system they cannot do without, in a country where public transport is just a hollow imitation of itself from the past. again, they spent trillions to get things how they are now! government propaganda since the red scare hasn't been as effective as this.

catboybotnet··on Why do so few people major in computer science? (2017)
Take my ycombinator gold, good internet sir.
catboybotnet··on Shopify discourages meetings by shaming employees with cost calculator
Sadly, this does not deter those whose sole way to show they are being productive (or have got something to prove) is through meetings.
catboybotnet··on When Work Didn’t Follow You Home
If you are not paid overtime, then you are not expected to work overtime. Simple as.

If the product is expected to be up 24/7, and there is nobody scheduled after you, it's on management and not you to solve that.
