castratikron··on You Don’t Need a Blockchain, You Need a Time-Series Database
Hijacking somewhat: does anyone know of a small time series db library for C? Looking at doing data logging with a RPi and wondering if there's anything better than CSV in terms of file size efficiency
castratikron··on Caterpillar creates 2,700 square metre Pac-Man gameboard
"These trials are designed to surprise and delight our customers"

castratikron··on SQLite now allows multiple recursive SELECT statements in a single recursive CTE
Transitive closure will tell you if a path between two nodes exists, not the length of the shortest path between two nodes.
castratikron··on Lidar used to cost $75,000–here’s how Apple brought it to the iPhone
"Apple says lidar will enhance the iPhone's camera by allowing more rapid focus, especially in low-light situations. And it may enable the creation of a new generation of sophisticated augmented reality apps."
castratikron··on Great Barrier Reef has lost half of its corals since 1995
"We just had a massive bleaching event, but we know from past research that corals are able to recover from the brink of death."

Oh, it wasn't dead, it was just on the brink of death. That's much better.

castratikron··on Ferrari is bricked during upgrade due to no mobile reception while underground
It's probably on a VPN or a private APN and not the internet.
castratikron··on The new minimum salaries in finance and tech for H1B visas
H1Bs are supposed to be used only if you can't find domestic talent. So it makes sense that something scarce would be expensive.
castratikron··on Owning an electric car does save money – most EVs are $6-$10K cheaper
How does this fit in with the trend stated a few years ago that low emissions vehicles are cheaper to maintain?

https://news.mit.edu/2016/study-finds-low-emissions-vehicles...

And the question of the next decade will be: which BEV is cheaper to maintain and why?

castratikron··on Facebook widens ban on political ads as alarm rises over election
What if they made all social media read-only for a day or two preceding the election? Analogous to radio silence. Then it would be impossible for anyone to post misinformation about where to vote or other things that are designed to change the result of an election.
castratikron··on Hiring for tech jobs has increased more than 100% in these Midwestern cities
Stats are from 2018, any idea what the trend has been in the last six months? Are a significant amount of workers truly leaving places like SF and NYC for a cheaper place in the Midwest?
castratikron··on Nvidia announces Jetson Nano 2GB, a single board computer
Hey now, having the words "cat" and "dog" printed next to the pictures of the cat and the dog is cheating!
castratikron··on Tesla acquires German battery assembly line maker supplying BMW and Mercedes
Exactly. Engineers need to be in charge of engineering companies. Boeing is a case study in what happens otherwise.
castratikron··on The IRS Sets a Trap for Cryptocurrency Tax Cheats
It doesn't say "crypto" currency, it says "any virtual currency". So what do they mean by any virtual currency? ACH direct deposit? Starbucks gift cards? RuneScape gold? Virtual currency is just currency that isn't physical. Bitcoin was not the first virtual currency (nor the first decentralized currency).

They should just remind everyone that cryptocurrency counts as income. No need for a question that has an ambiguous answer. This is going to confuse a lot of people.

castratikron··on How poker and a spaceship imposter game make you better at life
If you like Among Us, you should try Project Winter. Same concept but the game is more sophisticated in a few ways. (1) Everything is done by voice chat, which makes it a lot harder to fib. (2) The tasks and ways to sabotage are also more intricate than Among Us, which in that game are basically "click this button" whereas in Project Winter it involves crafting, going to the corners of the map (which is also a lot bigger) to find pieces, or combat. One of the tasks involves finding four digits across the map, so in that case it's very easy and effective to simply lie about which number you found and cause a lot of wasted time. (3) You can remove/kill anyone from the game but in Project Winter you don't know who was the imposter until the end of the game, so you're never certain how many are left.
castratikron··on Black Tom Explosion
US had declared war on Japan but not Germany. Germany declared war on US a few days later.
castratikron··on Trump’s WeChat curbs halted by judge on free speech concerns
Maybe they will decouple the app from the backend. Publish the interface, set up an auth system and let the community build their own apps to interface with it.

That's the reason email still exists today and will continue to exist long after today's fad app goes out of style.

castratikron··on Base 65536
Fun fact: As the base goes down, the number gets longer. If you think about the base as the height, you could then find the "area" of the number by multiplying the two. It turns out that the base that minimizes this area is e.

castratikron··on US bans WeChat, TikTok from app stores, threatens shutdowns
They should GPL the app. Play the PGP card and print the source in a book.
castratikron··on US bans WeChat, TikTok from app stores, threatens shutdowns
It just seems strange that there's only one option available. In the US there are so many options that I find myself using an app just to talk to a specific friend, e.g. to talk to John, I'll use Twitter DMs, but I'll use Facebook to talk to Mike. Maybe this is a lesson to not consolidate literally every function of daily life into one superapp?
castratikron··on Law allows police to seize and sell cars of non-lawbreakers, keeping proceeds
The rest of the article gives some context:

>She was in the passenger seat when a state trooper clocked her car at 118 miles per hour on I-94 in St. Paul.

>When the driver, Syrgeo Perez, 30, refused a breathalyzer, he was arrested on suspicion of DWI and troopers seized Dietrich's car using Minnesota's forfeiture law.

Do you really think that seizure was completely and totally unwarranted given the circumstances? If I were her, I would make him pay whatever it took to get my car back.

castratikron··on Open Source Thinkpad T420 Battery Design
Would it be possible to write directly to /dev/i2c in Linux and spoof the messages? Not sure what the use case of this would be, but might be useful for something.
castratikron··on Open Source Thinkpad T420 Battery Design
Is this still needed if coreboot is installed?

Will this work to make a slice (bottom) battery too?

castratikron··on Boeing yanks eight 787s from service over structural issue
As SpaceX (and Tesla) have shown, sometimes in order to make real progress you need to restart things from zero. Tech debt piles up and political lines become entrenched to the point where nothing but marginal change can be made. Nationalizing the company would basically make this impossible.

And maybe putting a real engineer in charge of a freaking engineering company wouldn't be a bad first step either...

castratikron··on We hacked 28,000 unsecured printers to raise awareness of printer security issue
Does this mean roboprinting will be a thing soon? Will my printer start printing off ads for cruises and extended auto warranties?
castratikron··on Japan facing credit card number shortage
"The first six digits represent the country, brand, and the type of card issuer and other elements". The last digit is a check digit so it's actually only 1 billion.
castratikron··on ReMarkable MicroSD (2019)
I can't understand the negative sentiment in these replies. A ribbon cable is objectively a better design choice. If someone is attempting this mod themselves why would they not pick the best choice? We're all engineers, here, right? Do you all prefer to drive without wearing a seat belt as well?
castratikron··on ReMarkable MicroSD (2019)
Oh, man. I'm surprised that card works at all with that wiring. High speed single ended signaling does not do well off-board. Have you done any kind of integrity testing, like writing a GB to the disk and then reading the checksum?

If anyone is looking to do this mod, at least consider using a shielded ribbon cable like so:

castratikron··on Jobseekers face exploitation as online recruitment is riddled with fake news
Recruiters impacting product development seems so obvious of a link but I've never thought of it that way.

Makes me wonder what effect referral bonuses have on an org. People might be more likely to refer people who are similar to themselves, so you might end up with more of the same. Which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who's already in...

castratikron··on Beta users of Starlink get downloads of 11 to 60 Mbps
Since the ephemerides of all starlink satellites are known, shouldn't it be possible to program these into the camera and not expose the sensor when a satellite is overhead? Makes it more complicated of course but this can let everyone win
castratikron··on Stanford cancels plans to bring half of undergrads back to campus
I'm convinced I nearly died during my first semester. Swine flu, pneumonia and a throat infection all in the course of a month. Anyone who thinks this won't spread through a college doesn't have a clue.
