castis··on 25 Years of PHP
No one is claiming that PHP is and/or was without fault. The sentiment is that we built things that worked despite them.
castis··on Coronavirus: 'Baffling' observations from the front line
> The fact that people with your arrogance and your ignorance exist actually distresses me.

Weird, your account says you joined in 2012 but it seems like today might be your first day on the internet?

castis··on Average adult will spend 34 years of their life staring at screens
Google, for all its current problems, _has_ made organization of the worlds knowledge vastly better than it was before they showed up.

I could be wrong but just surrounding the field of software development, there's probably already more relevant information on the internet than I could possibly consume in my life.

castis··on Quick-Thinking Cop Captures Runaway Peacock
Imagining this is hilarious. Did you ever do it more than this one time?
castis··on DirectX is coming to the Windows Subsystem for Linux
> The Linux gaming folks will be pretty sad about this one.

I was a tad bummed when realizing what this actually was, but still very much impressed.

castis··on Coronavirus Came from Bats, Can Infect Cats, Ferrets, WHO Says
Can you cite the information you have that makes this clear to you?
castis··on A look at modern PHP
i think the whole point is that some of those things are not 100% necessary to build great stuff.
castis··on Customizing Your Shell
Well sure, the learning curve is the fun part!
castis··on Customizing Your Shell
On the other hand I'd recommend customizing as much as reasonably possible on your home rig. You stand to learn so much more about how your system is constructed. Once you get to a certain level of understanding, most machines that you come into contact with that sport a terminal are easily usable.
castis··on Make Linux Fast Again (2019)
Yeah, we wouldn't want people to be do things they don't understand.

Maybe when people ask for clarity on a subject, we should give them reasons instead of saying things like "just dont".

castis··on Make Linux Fast Again (2019)
Could you go into detail on what you mean here?
castis··on Show HN: DCPM – Docker Compose Package Manager
exec only works on specific running containers so you'll need the container id for this

    exec -ti f635776c2d08 /bin/bash
i do this often enough that i keep this in a makefile so i can do it by image name

    docker exec -ti `docker ps | grep 'container-name' | awk '{print $$1}'` /bin/bash
castis··on Talkyard: Open-Source forum software – a StackOverflow, Reddit, Disqus hybrid
My blind guess is; one hand not know what the other is doing.

Ive left projects and come back to find the developer between had done things like, pull in a library to handle slideshows when one already existed. Things like that.

castis··on CSS Zen Garden
I am convinced that people who recommend things like that have no idea where we are or how we got here.
castis··on [dead]
> all very hypothetical

Negatively contributing to an active crisis is a horrible idea.

castis··on Launch HN: Visual One (YC W20) – Event recognition for security cameras
Not to say you shouldn't move forward with your grand plans, but there are lot of people, myself included, who won't touch any of this for those reasons.

I don't need more of my life stored on someone elses network.

castis··on Boeing proposal to avoid 737-MAX wiring shift does not win U.S. support
I imagine the answer is probably still money.
castis··on MacBook 16-inch Fan Noise (2019)
But he's making very little noise while doing so.
castis··on Bosch Smart glasses: A tiny laser array paints images directly onto your retina
Seems like this technology, when developed further, could be the sort of thing that https://www.skully.com/ was trying with their original prototype, which was really exciting to me at the time.
castis··on AMD reckons it can win the high-end GPU battle
I hear that, I had a laptop some years ago with an Nvidia Optimus card in it. It was quite the frustrating experience. I got it to work well enough with bumblebee on Ubuntu but it never felt solid. I had hoped maybe the experience had gotten better but I guess not. I'll continue steering clear.
castis··on Debian votes for Proposal B, “Systemd but we support exploring alternatives”
That's true but what we're hoping for is that Debian doesn't change things so much that sysvinit is unusable. Systemd does have its advantages but some people _like_ sysvinit.
castis··on DoD Hiring announcement for computer scientists
OP appears to be a govt employee. I bet this is a "hey i made a post, yall go upvote it" situation.
castis··on Gitlab was down
oof, literally all of it. dont see that too often. on thanksgiving day no less.

i root for gitlab when i can, but theres a reason i mirror my repos to github.

castis··on Juul Shipped At Least 1M Contaminated Pods, New Lawsuit Says
I honestly cant tell if there is any sarcasm in here.
castis··on Xfinity Is Man-in-the-Middle Attacking My Internet
Purposely sidestepping the entire spirit of the issue is not going to help whatever this is you're doing in the name of The Users With Actually Serious Problems.
castis··on Amazon won't spin off AWS. That's hurting AWS
Asking someone to move platforms over the course of 2 years as a contractual agreement is not the same as having someone breach an already-existing contract with AWS.
castis··on Prenatal THC exposure yields hyperdopaminergic phenotype rescued by pregnenolone
possible "neuropsychiatric disorders linked to aberrant dopaminergic function."

I took this to mean: possible problems regulating/utilizing dopamine which could mean a whole lot of things. increasinly predisposed to things like depression, difficulty breaking addictions that supply the user with dopamine, etc.

castis··on Edward Snowden on The Joe Rogan Experience [video]
Big words from a new user bearing a random string for a username.
castis··on Ask HN: Do we need Google captcha?
Over the past 2 years or so I've become incredibly skilled at identifying crosswalks, fire hydrants, traffic lights, and bicycles.

I don't necessarily mind contributing to googles car-driving AI, but the services that I've put this captcha infront of have seen a dramatic increase in spam.

I unfortunately don't know what the solution to this problem is but I would gladly contribute to whatever someone smarter than me comes up with!

castis··on Why Did ArchLinux Embrace Systemd? (2016)
What should someone google in order to find out more about this? (i tried, i got lots of information about the samsung phone, even with -samsung and various incantations of 'init', 'processes', 'linux', etc)
