cannonedhamster··on The pros and cons of placebo buttons
Welp, that's a few hours I'm never getting back from that rabbit hole. I really should have seen the Admiral shouting about it being a trap.
cannonedhamster··on The pros and cons of placebo buttons
Massachusetts pedestrians are only guaranteed right of way in marked crosswalks that do not have a signal. When there is a signal the light denotes right of way.

cannonedhamster··on The pros and cons of placebo buttons
You do not generally have right of way in a marked crosswalk if you have a signal. Anywhere that doesn't have a signal you have the right of way at all times within a marked crosswalk only, regardless of the color of light, outside of marked crosswalks pedestrians are not guaranteed right of way in MA.

I used to be a Bostonian and am a current MA resident, though I work in Cambridge. I've played more chicken on Comm Ave than I care to admit. :)

cannonedhamster··on Too Many Workers Are Trapped by Non-Competes
I hate non-competes, non-disparagement,and IP assignment clauses. I've had two (smaller) companies that had them in their offer letter and in both cases I've had the non-competes and non-disparagements removed. I'm not sure I'd have as much luck with a larger company, however it definitely does happen on occasion.

First time was as a new grad. The non-compete literally prevented me from working within 200 miles of my home in the same industry. I noped out. Even when they removed it I wasn't interested because that's shady.

Second time was at a different company. I just let them know I wasn't comfortable giving up my 1st amendment rights just to work somewhere and they considered it and let me take it out. My HR person was awesome and the company treated it's employees well.

Not disputing your other points, just want people to know they should at the very least make sure to ask. It may end up with a no, but it could end up turning out alright.

cannonedhamster··on New Pricing for G Suite Basic and Business Editions
As a user of Zoho who switched from GSuite. I've been very happy with your service so far. Support got back to me quickly when I needed help and the documentation answered most of my questions. I find some of the plans a bit confusing, but I can do everything I need to do. I didn't even realize prices went down, but whatever I paid was a good deal for what I've gotten. Thanks!

I am not affiliated with Zoho in any way.

cannonedhamster··on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Wants to Raise Taxes on the Rich and Americans Agree
And they receive the lion's share of benefits from getting privileged access to legislators, better policing, lighter sentencing in the rare case they are charged with an infraction. The poor basically get scraps, no legislative voice, higher risk of death by police, higher rate of incarceration, and basically all the worst parts of America. The rich are doing just fine, seeing as we're effectively in the second gilded age.
cannonedhamster··on I was mistaken for a call girl
I didn't look at the names in this thread until you pointed it out either. It's not just you that just reads the comments and doesn't pay attention to the name of the other comment creator.
cannonedhamster··on GitHub after Microsoft: How it has changed
I swear we're not trying to lock you in we're just implementing feature X that's been requested for years. Yes it does break compatibility with Y, but while Y is stable it's outdated and not capable of doing X without too much work.
cannonedhamster··on Man raises privacy concerns after car dealership employee turns off his dashcams
Why not? You're not allowed in the bays for "safety reasons" and numerous times covert recording devices have found shady business practices. Workers routinely have monitoring software on their workplace computers. Car dealerships are notorious for ripping people off. You're also not allowed to destroy someone else's property, which the video was, and you're definitely not allowed to go through someone else's property.
cannonedhamster··on Man raises privacy concerns after car dealership employee turns off his dashcams
Typically the batteries on these devices don't last very long unless it's hooked to the car battery. There's zero reason for the mechanic to go through the property of a client. I'd sue the hell out of that company for doing that. It would be similar to an employee at a computer store going through your computer looking for racy photos. That's not their job. Disconnecting the camera would make me never bring my car to that place again as I wouldn't trust the mechanic.
cannonedhamster··on What Minimum-Wage Foes Got Wrong About Seattle
Or the opinions being presented against minimum wage increases aren't compelling.
cannonedhamster··on What Minimum-Wage Foes Got Wrong About Seattle
So, where does the transition from 2014 to 2016 add up to less than 365 days? I'm confused by your numbers. In 2015 the minimum was was $11 and 2016 it was $13. Not sure where you're getting your gripe from.
cannonedhamster··on Bill Gates Just Published a Letter Urging US Leaders to Embrace Nuclear Energy
I'm not a proponent of earth based nuclear because of the storage issue, however if we're going to force the issue we at least need something better than LWR which was effectively chosen because it was the right choice for submarines. Sodium reactors at least avoid the Chernobyl meltdown situation. I'd never heard of the making new fuel with nitric acid, that's at least an interesting, if probably not commercially viable solution.
cannonedhamster··on Marc Andreessen: VR will be 1,000 times bigger than AR
VR vastly overestimates the amount of space people have in their living rooms. Unless we're designing houses with rooms just for VR, I don't ever see it taking off. Maybe as a destination like a holodeck?
cannonedhamster··on Meat-free 'Impossible Burger 2.0' tastes even closer to the real deal
It's more efficient to ship grain than cattle, and most cattle still requires feed to get to market size. The whole mythos behind cattle drives was to get them to a location for slaughter and shipping. The same exact thing you said about cattle is the same as grains, except cows require more water external to the grass.Cows also require maintenance above what crops typically do as well. Ranchers are very good at what they do, however it's still a ton of work. Farming is slowly becoming significantly more automated, which is a good thing as less people are interested in becoming farmers.
cannonedhamster··on Meat-free 'Impossible Burger 2.0' tastes even closer to the real deal
There is nowhere near enough grass to feed nearly all Texas cattle to marketable size in Texas. Nearly all commercial cattle are bred and born in Mexico from US genetic stock and transferred to the US for fattening with cattle feed because it is cheaper to breed in Mexico and feed in the US. Last I checked only about 3% of US beef was fully grass fed. So it's fully possible you know some grass fed ranchers, but it's unlikely that the second biggest export in Texas is possible without massive amounts of cattle feed. Grass fed beef tasting better is subjective but the costs associated with the process appear to dictate that to consumers it's something they are willing to pay for.
cannonedhamster··on Cancer Progress: Much More Than You Wanted To Know (2018)
It would be by necessity less of a killer as people didn't live as long. The average age of death in those times was late thirties, far lower than the common age of cancer in the mid to late 60s. Keep in mind that sanitation, food preparation, medical science, and clean water were all huge advances in life spans and general health.

The PBS series "How We Got to Now" is a great resource for the huge advances in health made in the 19th and 20th centuries.

cannonedhamster··on Cancer Progress: Much More Than You Wanted To Know (2018)
No, you're absolutely incorrect that most cancer is down to lifestyle. As someone with cancer, I don't smoke, I never really drank, there's no history in my family for my type of cancer, and I haven't eaten meat in years. I've exercised more than the average person. Most cancer is due to dumb luck. The only cancers we know of that are attributable to lifestyle are basically lung cancers. Breast, Colon, Pancreatic, Stomach, Leukemia, etc. are all just dumb luck or family history. You obviously didn't read the article. We're only better at things we know how to screen for. Survival rates in Asia for Stomach cancer are significantly better than the US because they have regular screenings for it. The typical cases are salty diets, but Americans still get this even though we've changed our diets.

There's no "cure" for cancer as of yet, you can't even guarantee prevention. It's a combination of genetic damage and an immune system that gets prevented from stopping the proliferation of cancer cells because the cells mask themselves as healthy cells. In effect cancer is an immune disease, but that's not fully accurate. Saying it's down to lifestyle is like telling people who got the plague they should have just moved. We have barely more understanding about cancer causes than doctors at the time did about disease.

cannonedhamster··on Cancer Progress: Much More Than You Wanted To Know (2018)
I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in September/October. Basically it aggressively grew within a few months. I can tell you without any doubt that huge advances are coming. I expect a hockey stick in the survival rates based on new understandings of all cancers. We're right on that edge of a manageable disease. Hang in there.
cannonedhamster··on Lionsgate copyright claims over reviews by YouTuber AngryJoeShow [video]
Stop using Youtube then. Seems like a mass exodus of top talent might make Youtube react. Otherwise they aren't going to do anything. You're not worth it unless you're impacting Google's bottom line.
cannonedhamster··on Lionsgate copyright claims over reviews by YouTuber AngryJoeShow [video]
However you've already lost almost all revenue for a video with no compensation from YT or the false claimant. It's specifically against content creators and does nothing to prevent copyright infringement. It does nothing but prove copyright infringement isn't a problem that can be solved in the courts or through the legal system. Most people do not believe the courts are fair, the law is fair, or that compensation is equitable for the product. Companies that solve that problem don't tend to have that problem. Don't believe me? Try looking up how easy it is to get Netflix content. It's not nearly as widely available on illicit sources as content that's more heavily locked down.
cannonedhamster··on Samsung Phone Users Perturbed to Find They Can't Delete Facebook
You know what you can't do with iOS? Use a 3.5mm jack. :D Realistically though I found iOS to be too restrictive and I dislike that there's only one theme that's available. It was far too bright for my eyes at night even with it turned all the way down. Checking my phone at night would often wake my wife. I can't believe that iOS doesn't have a dark theme.
cannonedhamster··on We won a CES robotics innovation award, then they took it back
Which should have been covered in the entry section before the award was even made. They received an award that was rescinded for either puritanical reasons, bad category reasons, or political reasons. None of these are anything other than ineptitude or bias. I can say I'd not want to put money forth for CES given that they can't even get their awarding process straight.
cannonedhamster··on We won a CES robotics innovation award, then they took it back
The posting literally describes sex toys for men at CES being displayed. There have also been numerous sex toys over the years by multiple partners and companies. I'm not sure why the award was withdrawn, however none of the options make CES look good.
cannonedhamster··on The 'doomsday' scenario: what happens if the shutdown drags on
She's not. If Democrats give in to the demands of Pres. Trump it will only embolden him that his methods work. Democrats have nothing to lose, they passed a clean bill, they offered money for border security, etc. Democrats tried negotiating in good faith, Pres. Trump has his opinions literally dictated by Fox News and right wing pundits, which means that even his own party can't even count on him.

This is entirely meant to be a distraction from the Mueller investigations so Pres. Trump has no vested interest in ending it. He had 2 years in which to get the funding passed unopposed, he chose not to. This is entirely a manufactured controversy intended to distract. Anything the Democrats did agree to would immediately be thrown out by Pres. Trump. The only person who can end the shutdown is the President.

cannonedhamster··on The 'doomsday' scenario: what happens if the shutdown drags on
Caving used to be called compromise. The current political environment doesn't allow for compromise or changing your mind in light of new, better information. In science that would be the standard. In politics that's called "flip-flopping".
cannonedhamster··on Chariot is shutting down
I mean this is covered in the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". GM also tried to destroy Toon Town.
cannonedhamster··on Two years later, I still miss the headphone port
But there's a difference here. HDMI is a better standard. It provides a noticeable improvement and there was a significant period of overlap. Plus if you're doing a transition from RCA to digital it requires a single converter one time and you don't need to keep recharging it. The difference here would be removing all input ports and requiring that you stream everything via your wireless internet. Then you'd have to charge your television but only when you weren't watching it. Everyone would think that was a stupid design choice.
cannonedhamster··on Two years later, I still miss the headphone port
So the fact that a pair of $20 headphones that have wires sound better than a pair of wireless headphones at the same price point is somehow the person you are responding to's fault and makes him cheap for not buying something that he wouldn't need to buy if a feature that did exist still existed. Yeah I think the problem is that you don't realize everyone doesn't have the money you obviously do.
