cangencer··on Scientists find 'friendliness' genes that distinguish dogs from wolves
"Unfortunately, our website is currently unavailable in most European countries. We are engaged on the issue and committed to looking at options that support our full range of digital offerings to the EU market. We continue to identify technical compliance solutions that will provide all readers with our award-winning journalism."
cangencer··on Cheesemaking tips from the ancients
For anyone interested in cheese, I really enjoyed the book "Reinventing the Wheel: Milk, Microbes and the Fight for Real Cheese" by Bronwen Percival and Francis Percival
cangencer··on The Basic Sourdough
For those interesting in fermentation in general, I can recommend the book "Wild Fermentation" by Sandor Katz.

cangencer··on Repair cafés waging war on throwaway culture
Another company which is similar in coffee space is Technivorm, you can buy / replace all the parts, and I actually bought a 10+ years old machine which works flawless after replacing a few minor parts.

cangencer··on Chinese Workers Abandon Silicon Valley for Riches Back Home
Foreigners as in British, American, Swiss or Austrian? Or people from bulk of the immigrant population (Turkey, Romania, Poland, Greece..)
cangencer··on Chinese Workers Abandon Silicon Valley for Riches Back Home
I would think that ceiling exists in almost all countries, and US (and especially SV) does pretty well in terms of having non-natives in the higher rings of management. For example, Germany might have 20+ millions people with foreign roots (20%+ of population) and might look very welcoming to them, but you'd be hard pressed to find many in higher management roles.
cangencer··on Snap Jumps in Debut After App Maker Raises $3.4B in IPO
AFAIK the underwriters typically don't buy and sell the stock themselves - but offer it to their clients, who can buy the shares at the IPO price instead of the opening price. The underwriters then charge a fee based on the size of the IPO.
cangencer··on Hazelcast Jet – In-Memory Streaming and Fast Batch Processing
It's a distributed data processing engine - not specific to just a distributed java.util.stream implementation, that is just one of the uses of it.

It provides fast distributed computation as an infrastructure component - Jet is fully embeddable in your application.

Disclaimer: I am one of the engineers who worked on this.

cangencer··on New Cities
I can recommended Danish architect Jan Gehl's book - Cities for People (https://www.amazon.com/Cities-People-Jan-Gehl/dp/159726573X) for inspiration.
cangencer··on Basic income plan clearly rejected by Swiss voters
Regarding 4), the numbers reported are quarterly. You can see the annual chart here:

cangencer··on San Francisco Office Rents Pass Manhattan as Most Expensive in Country
I think UK is only place where rents are advertised as per week, found it very weird when living there.
cangencer··on Vancouver tech surges as U.S. immigration reform idles
Regarding the Canadian visa situation, how easy is it for a non-resident senior Java dev to find a job in Vancouver and get sponsorship for a visa? Here in UK most companies will not even consider applicants who are not residents.
cangencer··on Q – A Data Language
As someone who had to teach myself kdb/Q recently, I can recommend the Q for Mortals book: http://code.kx.com/wiki/JB:QforMortals2/contents
cangencer··on Facebook Buying WhatsApp for $16B in Cash and Stock Plus $3B in RSUs
Interesting to see that they use Erlang. http://www.erlang-factory.com/conference/SFBay2012/speakers/...

I wonder if this is still valid?

cangencer··on 1/9998 = 0.0001 0002 0004 0008 0016 0032 0064 0128 0256..

cangencer··on Poll: Freelance developers in London, how much do you charge per hour?
Flat rate is calculated on your total revenue including VAT, so for £2000/week your gains would be £52/week (£2000 * 1.20 * 0.855)
cangencer··on Announcing TypeScript 0.9.1
has anybody been it using it for a node.js project? (i.e. serverside?)
cangencer··on ASP.NET MVC security and user management done the right way
I appreciate the effort, but I would never use something like this which is not open source.
cangencer··on What is Happening in Istanbul?
There is a lot of misguided information floating around. I think this is the most objective article I've read so far. http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2013/06/istanbul-p...
cangencer··on GOV.UK: new government site built with open source software, £70 million cheaper
For the curious, here is the tech stack: http://digital.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/govuk-launch-colophon/
cangencer··on Hastebin
I like it, simple and gets the job done and has keyboard shortcuts.

Seems to be developed in node.js and supports Redis, Memcahced or File based storage and uses phonetic key generation.

Impressive to see how little code there actually is in the actual application too.
