candlemas··on Inner Speech
Did thought bubbles in cartoons/comics confuse you?
candlemas··on I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions
I don't think Ilya will be getting any more offers to join a board of directors.
candlemas··on Cormac McCarthy has died
I think you're supposed to follow the unofficial Hacker News death announcement title format of "[name of person] has died".

candlemas··on Why are humans never satisfied? [video]
Probably because there are other people you are always comparing yourself to.
candlemas··on “Healthy obesity” doesn’t exist. It is unequivocally bad for you
Get an exercise bike or elliptical trainer and watch movies or tv while you use it.
candlemas··on Ask HN: More magazines like Quanta and Noema?
https://inference-review.com/ but it doesn't publish frequently.
candlemas··on Chronophoto
I wish it had a seed that you could specify.
candlemas··on Svante Pääbo: ‘It’s maybe time to rethink our idea of Neanderthals’
How many variants is that? I have 331 variants which is more than 99% of other customers but less than 2% of my DNA.
candlemas··on What happened to the first cryogenically frozen humans?
He's gonna be pissed off when he finds out about that.
candlemas··on Placing #1 in Advent of Code with GPT-3
You could see how it does on the later stages of previous years.
candlemas··on Building a Virtual Machine Inside ChatGPT
I can load and run snake on a Commodore 64 but I can't find a way to actually play it.
candlemas··on Tell HN: I asked ChatGPT to build a login form in React and it gave me the code
Is this why Elon Musk is firing so many programmers at Twitter?
candlemas··on Citing new evidence, families sue feds, Raytheon, Lockheed over 1996 TWA crash
I was always curious about how so many witnesses saw a streak of light shoot up to the plane which then exploded. I was never convinced by the video the CIA released that explained what those witnesses actually saw was a trail of burning jet fuel going away from the plane.
candlemas··on Sham investigations silence professors at Central Florida and Princeton
I wonder if it started when tumblr collapsed and its toxic user base was unleashed across the internet.
candlemas··on What would a “good” WebMD look like?
Most medical research is junk science that doesn't replicate so any site relying on those studies is probably going to be useless anyway. That could be why the satisfaction is so low.
candlemas··on The Missing Chinese Machine Revolution
Doesn't northern China grow wheat instead of rice?
candlemas··on TikTok ‘frog army’ stunt could have grave consequences, experts warn
Approximately 2% of frog eggs become tadpoles, 0.8% of tadpoles become froglets, and 0.1% of froglets become mature frogs capable of reproduction. However, these figures vary based on frog species, predation, and habitat. Some favorable environments may see higher average survival rates of 1 – 2%.

I don't think his plan is going to work.

candlemas··on The Berkeley Crossword Solver
I'd like to see its performance on New York Times crosswords split into decades. I suspect they've been getting dumbed down.
candlemas··on US hypersonic missile fails in test- 2nd consecutive failed attempt
Our rockets always blow up.
candlemas··on LaMDA is not sentient
What is a hypothetical conscious program doing differently than a program like TurboTax? I'm talking about on the level of the CPU. I don't know where else consciousness would be located in a computer.
candlemas··on LaMDA is not sentient
I think a human brain is quite a bit different from any other pile of meat. But a computer running an AI versus the computer running TurboTax is the same thing. They're running through the same set of instructions, swapping the same bits of data in and out of memory.
candlemas··on LaMDA is not sentient
It is directing a physical process. The physical process is the changing physical state of the CPU, whatever level you want to get down to, and an artificial intelligence program isn't doing anything different at that level than any other program is doing.
candlemas··on LaMDA is not sentient
That wouldn't change a thing. A simulation is not the thing being simulated, it is data being processed and people agreeing to interpret that data in a certain way. If somebody coded a perfect simulation of a fire their computer would not burn down.
candlemas··on LaMDA is not sentient
I think worms probably are conscious. I'm not saying a computer cannot be conscious, just that if it can it already is and the particulars of the program do not matter. I think consciousness is a physical process, nothing to do with software.
candlemas··on LaMDA is not sentient
A perfect simulation of a human run on a computer would exist only in the minds of the people doing the simulation. On the computer it would be bits of data without any intrinsic meaning that is being processed like any other data. So no, I don't think it would be conscious unless a computer becomes conscious whenever it is running.
candlemas··on LaMDA is not sentient
At any given moment the vast majority of the program that makes up LaMDA is inert, just sitting somewhere in memory and one or a few instructions are in the CPU along with some data in registers and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between when the CPU is running LaMDA versus when it is running any other program. The magic would be in the CPU and there is no reason to believe the particular code for LaMDA has endowed it with consciousness. If the computer is conscious while running LaMDA it would be conscious while running any program because at the level where it matters there is no essential difference between them. Why would LaMDA shuffling data between registers and memory and performing operations on them create consciousness while TurboTax doing the same thing does not?
candlemas··on DALL-E 2 generates images of Kermit The Frog in various films
None of those look like Kermit the Frog.
candlemas··on IQ scores are falling and have been for decades (2018)
Yes.
candlemas··on IQ scores are falling and have been for decades (2018)
Tabs were a mistake.
candlemas··on How to Quiet Your Mind Chatter (2021)
>how slow would a person’s thought processes have to be if they had to spell everything out in internal monologues?

The verbalized "thoughts" come after the fact. They thought already exists and then you put it into words to yourself. The verbalization can be confused for thinking.
